I've just bought and watched the Gaither "Ryman Gospel Reunion" DVD.

The make up of The Nelons appears different. Is Charlotte Richie, from The
Easters, singing with Rex and Kelly? What has been the line up of the Nelons
over the years, please?

Charlotte sang with Rex and Kelly for awhile until she married the drummer
from the Easters and then joined them.

This isn't real specific.

For much of their history, though, the line-up was Rex, Kelly, Jerry
Thompson, and a string of sopranos. The most notable soprano alumni are
probably Karen Peck, Janet Paschal, and Charlotte Ritchie. Charlotte and
another young singer originally joined the Nelons during a time when Kelly
and Jerry had quit the group and were traveling as a duo. This was around
1992, I think.

Todd Nelon sang with them off and on over the years, but he mostly played
bass. Somewhere along the way in the early 1990s, Jason Clark joined the
group as the bass player and Kelly and Jerry started traveling with the
group again. After Rex', Jason's dad Dan Clark came in as the bass singer
and remains with the group now. After Kelly's divorce from Jerry, David Hill
joined at tenor. As with all groups he joins, Hill soon left, for whatever
reason. Paul Lancaster sang with them for a while after that. Kelly
eventually married Jason Clark, and ultimately, Jason moved to the tenor
slot.

Meanwhile, the soprano rotation was in full swing as well. Amy Roth was
soprano before Rex' death. Melody Williams and Katy Van Horn followed Roth.
There may have been another one or two in there. Now Kelly's daughter,
Amber, is lip syncing the parts Katy recorded before she left the group.
She's a very good at it, though, and I'm sure she doesn't do it on every
single song . . . just the _United For Christ_ session material.

Looking at this historically, Rex found himself in a similar situation years
ago when he was singing with a group called the "Lefevres," but there was no
Lefevre in the group. That's when The Rex Nelon Singers came about, because
he decided to change the group's name. Now, we have the "Nelons," but three
of them have the last name "Clark." Of course, as long as Kelly's singing, I
expect they'll continue to use the Nelons name.

It was 1992. I don't remember the other young lady's name either, but when
I saw them at NQC that year she seemed disinterested, snobbish or a little
of both. Also, Paul White was in this lineup singing the tenor part. He is
now with the Todd Nelon Qt, along with Todd, Rodney Swain (he sang with the
Rex Nelon Singers before Jerry Thompson) & one of the former bass singers
for Poet Voices whose name I don't recall (he was between Mike Allen & Tim
Duncan)

Did we get any confirmation about his supposed managerial career at
Wal-Mart?

Great voice. I'm looking forward to hearing him with the Martins.

OUCH!!!

I was told that Dan Clark either has or will be coming off the road. I
don't have any confirmation, though. Has anyone seen them recently that can
confirm or deny?

Dan Clark made what I'm sure was a very difficult decision to leave the group
and stay home. The Nelons are now a trio. Maybe it's time to re-mix some
tracks.

I am sorry but I find it hard to believe that Amber was lip syncing. I
mean, what would be the point of that? Her voice IMO is much better
than Van Horn's is. We had the Nelons in concert in September, I sat
on the front row, and Amber sang ever word to ever song. I know what
you are probably thinking ...that I let it slip right over my head. I
dont think so, I notice them things really close.....kind of like I
did with Milli Vanilli ;-)

SHE`LL be hard to beat for #1 soprano singer. The next time you hear

I don't see the group every night, so it's impossible to speculate that
there's lip syncing going on every single night. Amber is a very talented
singer.

I do know this, however . . . at their first performance at NQC last year
(Tuesday night at 8:41), they sang material from the _United For Christ_
recording, and the entire group sounded identical to the CD recording.
Everyone around me was dropping their jaw at Amber's voice, except a few who
were nodding knowingly. It was lip synced.

It is pretty well known that Van Horn is the singer you hear on the _United
For Christ_ CD. Note that Van Horn's picture doesn't appear on the CD.
However, if you have a copy of the 2002 NQC program book, you can see a
picture of the CD cover as it was originally designed, with Van Horn on the
cover. The sequence of events was recording made, artwork made, Van Horn
left, artwork adapted. It's even from the same photo session, with Van Horn
airbrushed out of the shot.

I could perhaps stretch and believe that maybe, just maybe, Amber is
talented enough to exactly duplicate her own voice in a live setting without
lip syncing. Few performers do, but I suppose it's possible. However, I
don't think she can exactly duplicate someone else's voice. This was
particularly noticeable on their performance of "The Star Spangled Banner."

This may or may not be true. I spoke with Kelly at the GWQC in April,
directly after Amber's debut performance. They did not have the United for
Christ CD at their table, because Kelly said they were re-doing it to put
Amber on it. That includes the cover art, no doubt.... but on stage, Kelly
was talking how Amber went into the studio to sing Katy's part for the new
CD. They were re-issuing the CD with Amber on it. They were selling
cassettes of the album with Katy on the cover, but no CD's.

I've not heard Van Horn all that much, but as for the live performance at
the GWQC, I remember Amber sounded terrific, but still sounded like a
teenager. So unless Van Horn also has a little girl's voice, what we heard
that night was Amber live.

Having said that, I did just re-listen to the CD that has Amber on the cover
(the Nelons sent it in the mail after I ordered it at GWQC). You are right
that the soprano sounds more mature than Amber does. I think you may be
right that it is Van Horn on the CD, especially on the acapella "Star
Spangled Banner". However, listen to Track 13, "Think About You". The
soprano is featured, and that sounds like Amber.

The Alto singer that was in the lineup during 1992-1993 was Tammy Britton. Her and Charlotte Penhollow sang together in Tammy's Father's group in Delaware, it was back when Charlotte was about 14 if I remember correctly. Tammy & Charlotte have two projects together prior to the Nelons "Right on Time" project. Both were recruited together to sing with The Nelons. Both left when Jerry & Kelly came back but Charlotte was rehired after Kelly Benton.
