I have been on the list for about a month, so I don't know if you have
talked about this or not. Who would be your "All-Star" quartet? By that I
mean if you could pick and choose from the current singers in Southern
Gospel music, who would make up the best quartet?

Here are my thoughts:

1st Group ...
Tenor -- Kirk Talley
Lead -- Geral Wolfe (Greater Vision)
Baritone -- Roger Trammel (Gold City)
Bass -- Harold Gilley
Pianist -- Anthony Burger

2nd Group ...
Tenor -- Larry Ford
Lead -- Ivan Parker
Baritone -- Squire Parsons
Bass -- George Younce
Pianist -- Roger Bennet

I would love to hear how these two groups would sound together ... maybe
Bill Gaither will get one of those together on one of the Homecoming Videos
(if he hasn't already). I realize there are LOTS of other great singers ...
who would comprise your two favorite quartets of today?

Welcome aboard Chris! This subject has been talked about before, but
that's ok. Every time we do it I come up with a whole new all star quratet.
btw .... I didn't realize that Mark Trammell of Gold City had a twin brother
named Roger! That must be very convenient for them since they'd never wear
out their voices only having to sing half the dates and if one of them
becomes sick they don't have to worry about finding a replacement. I, for
one, have been fooled for years thinking I was always seeing Mark, when in
fact, in was probably Roger Trammel up there singing! :o)

Ok ........ here goes. Not taking into account blend or style or eras or
living or dead.

1st Group ....

Tenor -- Rosie Rozell
Lead -- Michael English
Baritone -- Kenny Hinson (yeah ... I know he's not really a baritone, but
this is my dream, and with my $25 Million I'm going to buy the best guys I
want and they'll do what I tell them to do!)
Bass -- Tim Riley (Gold City)
Piano -- Garry Jones (formerly of Gold City)
Emcee -- George Younce :o)

2nd Group ...
Tenor -- Kirk Talley
Lead -- Ivan Parker
Baritone -- Mark & Roger Tramell :o)
Bass -- George Younce
Piano -- Stan Whitmire (formerly of the Nelons)
Emcee -- Jim Hamill (Although with Younce already in the group, we don't
really need him)

If we've got to take blend and style into account, I'll still lay my money
on the real Gold City (Brian Free, Ivan Parker etc.) They were the best
quartet in my lifetime and hard to top in anybody's dream!

Hasn't this group been together already?
They were called the Imperials.

This group couldn't have worked together much -- Jake and Gary both left in
'67 and were replaced by Terry and Roger Wiles, according to the Imperials
website. I don't think this group released a recording.

My intent was to include living and/or active singers in the All-Star,
quartet, but since others are including those from days gone by, I would
have to bump Gerald Wolfe out of lead and replace him with Glen Payne.

Guilty as charged. :-)

I have nearly everything they've ever recorded (I'm missing some of the
albums with Jake), and a lot of related stuff like old Keystones albums with
David Will and solo projects from just about everybody who ever sang with
them. My collection is over 125 pieces.

They caught my interest a long time ago and I've never gotten bored with
them..

Do you have their most recent stuff? The last ones I bought were called
_It's Still The Cross_ and _Songs Of Christmas_. As far as I know,
neither of these was ever sold in stores. I'd heard rumors about a year
ago that said they were going to do another "major label" release, but
so far I haven't seen anything. I did hear that David Will finally left
the group after something like 25 years. I believe Armond Morales' son
is singing with them now.

Here's my picks, just going on who I think is the best regardless of styles,
etc.

First group:
Tenor -- Kirk Talley
Lead -- Blue Ridge Quartet founder Elmo Fagg (What an unfortunate name! But a
beautiful voice!)
Baritone -- Glen Allred
Bass -- George Younce
Piano/Emcee -- Hovie Lister

Second group:
Tenor -- Laddie Cain or Kirk Talley
Lead -- Jake Hess
Baritone -- Bill Crowe
Bass -- Big Chief
Piano -- Too many good ones to pick from, but top choices would Anthony Burger,
Stan Whitmire, Roger Bennett, Danny Coker, Eva Mae LeFevre or even Howard
Goodman (I always liked Howard's unique style)
Emcee -- ??

This is all true, although I'm not sure if it was to have been a "major
label" release or a "major market ready" release. They had a project in the
works (they'd been talking about it for a long time, so I suspect it was
nearly done) when first Steve Ferguson and then both David Will and Barry
Weeks left last summer. So Armond had to re-start from scratch with his son
Jason and two other young fellows. I've not heard them to know what their
sound is like.

Their web site www.theimperials.org is good for info on the group, past and
present alike.

I agree. It would be unfortunate to be named after a Seseme Street
character. :o)

Someone said itwould be unfortunate to be named after a Sesame street
character, claiming Elmo Fagg was. I don`t think sesames street existed
,when Elmo Fagg was born.

Unfortunately, and I suppose this is a sad comment on our times, but his
last name would present much more of a problem as far as name calling and
the like.

Hope everyone has a great day. Take care..........KevinJ

That was me, and it was (I thought) an obvious joke, since the original
person who commented (aka "Doc") was obviously (I thought) referring to
Elmo Fagg's LAST name as "unfortunate." But, what can I say.

Maybe "WHOOSH!" would be appropriate. :o)
