Singing News website reports that Brian Free & Assurance has two new
members: BaritoneDerrick Selph and Bass Keith Plott. They replace Craig
Singletary and Bill Lawrence.

Since 1999, Selph has sang baritone for the Dixie Melody Boys. Plott has
sang bass with Danny Funderburk & Mercy's Way, and most recently with the
South Carolina-based quartet, Safe Harbor.

Free said: "Craig will be serving as a music minister in his father's
church, while pursuing a career in law enforcement as a Georgia State
Trooper. Bill Lawrence is coming off the road in order to devote more time
to the trucking company that he and his wife operate. Bill will also be
making himself available for some 'fill-in' work from time to time as his
schedule allows."

Derrick and Keith are expected to join the group beginning April 2.

This is funny, because I was discussing Brian Free and his groups with my
quartet's bass singer last night. Actually, I was telling him about how
solid and balanced Signature Sound Quartet is from top to bottom, and how no
one is really the "star" of the group, even though Tim Duncan seems to
getting most of the initial press. Then we shifted to talking about how
Brian Free, in contrast, is always the star of his groups. Our bass singer
said he thought he could probably get a job working for Free, and we laughed
about that.

Imaginary interview:
Bass singer: "I can sing the bass part, Brian, but I'd never, ever take your
spotlight away. You are really a soloist, and I would just be a background
singer."
Brian: "OK, great! You're hired. Sign up right here."

:o)

Not sure how much you are exaggerating but I know I'd rather see and hear a
soloist being backed up by a gospel group (as Elvis was) than to hear the
vocalist backed by music on tape usually with a bland vocal chorus. And even
Elvis featured
the group now and then.

I'm not following. What are you saying you thought I was saying?

I was just making a joke about the lack of balance in Free's group and
contrasting them with Signature Sound, which is a VERY balanced group. When
Free toured as a soloist, I expected him to act as a soloist. When you
market yourself as a quartet, even if you are the "name" in the group, it's
better when it's a balanced effort. Even though JD Sumner was the star of
"JD Sumner and the Stamps," he still featured the Eds and Rick on solos
quite a bit, especially Rick.

When Tony Gore had his group, it was definately a soloist with
backup.
