Glen Weldon Payne, 72, of Franklin died Friday, Oct. 15, at his residence. A
native of Royce City, Texas, Mr. Payne he was a gospel music performer for 56
years, including 35 years as lead singer of the highly regarded Cathedral
Quartet which won more than 90 awards, including 11 Grammy nominations. Mr.
Payne developed his fundamentals of music by attending Stamps School of Music
in Dallas. He was an Army veteran, a Mason and member of the Southern Gospel
Music Association and its Hall of Fame, Gospel Music Association and its Hall
of Fame, National Quartet Convention Board of Directors, Texas Music Hall of
Fame, Radio Music Hall of Fame and Franklin First Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Van L. Payne; a son, Todd Payne and his wife
Lori; two daughters, Carla Traylor and her husband William and Darla Hammons
and her husband Kevin, all of Franklin; a brother, Kenneth Payne of Dallas; a
sister, Wanda Lee Morris and her husband Darrell of Arlington, Texas; and three
grandchildren, Jordan Traylor, Marla Traylor and Glen Cole Payne.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Franklin First Baptist
Church-The People’s Church with Dr. Rick White and the Revs. Rex Humbard and
Wayne Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Williamson Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. today at Williamson Memorial Funeral Home and
two hours prior to service at the church. Active pallbearers will be Russ
Farrah, Earl Harris, David Cefaratti, Fred Privett, Larry Walters, Jim Payne,
Bill Mayer and Ed Harper. Honorary pallbearers will be Les Beasly, George
Younce, Rex Nelon, Charlie Burke, Claude Hopper, Ben Speer, Clark Beasly,
Maurice Templeton and Don Shumate.

Memorials may be made to Stamps-Baxter School of Music and the Southern Gospel
Music Trust Fund.

Williamson Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
