Just heard that Paul Lancaster (formerly with the Nelons) is taking
Jonathan Martin's place with The Martins.

Yep,

Saw them a week and 1/2 ago in Tennessee and they were great. I was very
impressed with their sound. Lancaster has a fuller tone and is much more
powerful than Martin, IMHO. All they said from the platform about Jonathon
was that he was doing fine and living in Iowa. As for his departure, just
that Jonathon Martin and The Martins had decided to go in different
directions.

Others have already cleared it up, I see, but I just wanted to say that one
of them is named Judy Martin Hess and the other is named Joyce Martin
McCollough. You do the math! :o)

Judy is married to Jake Hess, Jr. Joyce's husband Harrie has written a bunch
of their songs.

Jonathan had a child in a wheelchair due to some sort of birth defect, IIRC.
I don't know if that situation had anything to do with his decision to come
off the road or not, but I can imagine that was one big factor to consider.
I think they've scaled back their touring quite a bit in the last two or
three years, so it's possible the sisters were wanting to hit the road more
again, or vice versa.

Joyce was pregnant, near the verge of delivery, on the Carnegie Hall videos
that were filmed earlier this year, so I guess she's got a newborn right
now.

Then there's musical styles. The Martins have always been fairly diverse, so
I'd be surprised if that was the main determining factor . . . unless
Jonathan was wanting them to get into rap! :o)

Dean, the posters below are correct in stating that he was singing with
his two sisters. However, I've been told that he split with his wife too.

Perhaps he feels that this is just too much emotionally and
spiritually for him to deal with. All of the combined factors of the
marriage, the children, etc.
(not to mention the stress of being on the road) can certainly take
its toll on any normal human being. I'm glad they have Paul Lancaster
available -- he is one of the finest vocalists around -- an
outstanding talent!

Well, marital breakups are sometimes a factor in a group member resigning.

In this situation, it's my understanding that Jonathan is divorced from his
first wife, has married again and is expecting another child.
