congregations of the United Pentecostal Church. Despite his marriage, which
produced two musically talented daughters, rumors followed him regarding his
sexuality. In 1993, the controversy came to a boiling point with church
officials, and Lanny Wolfe left his employment at Jackson College of
Ministries, and the First Pentecostal Church of Jackson.

Nothing was ever published about the incident by the UPCI, the local church
or college, but rumors ran rampant throughout the denomination either
stating that his alleged homosexuality had been exposed, or that he had
allegedly committed felonious acts with minors. His marriage dissolved
shortly thereafter, further flaming Pentecostal rumor mills. Lanny Wolfe has
also never publicly acknowledged any wrongdoing, or to being homosexual.

Thank you Paul. I did know his wife left him, I didn`t know who was at
fault,but I think that tells us it wasn`t hers. Some men can fool us
can`t they? I wouldn`t have thought it of him or Kirk.they were both
good gospel singers, but they let their fans down. Now I can see why

WOW, I was a HUGE LW Trio fan and often wondered whatever happened to them.
Actually had the pleasure of seeing them live a time or two in a non
puplicized church venue. Since I often visited a UPC back then, (their
music was THE BEST in town) I remember wondering why the LW Trio was never
mentioned as time progressed, as it seems they were friends of the Pastorial
staff and family - and all of a sudden it was as though they had
disappeared. Now it all makes sense. They apparently stopped mentioning
the group once the suspicions arose.

I have never been accused by anyone who knows me of ever being homosexual.
So there is no need to deny it.
I only posted straight from his biography that was posted on the internet.
He might be a great songwriter but he evidently had issues with the church
and his sexuality.

And Junior, you obviously have "issues" with staying on point and
avoiding malicious slander. I mean do you really find speculating on
things you have no first hand knowledge of "Christlike". Like your
mama probably (or should have) told you, if you can't say something
good, it's best to keep your mouth shut; keep speculation (rumors,
gossip, whatever you'd choose to call it) to yourself. You never know

have personal experience with your discussion about LW. I was a
member of the United Pentecostal Church in 1986 when I met a man and
fell in love and married him. He had attended JCM in 1985 where he
was a member of the LW chorale and traveled the country with the
group. My life will never be the same because of LW. It took almost
11 years before the whole truth would come out. My husband was
actually "paired" with LW to share a hotel room and woke up one night
to find he was receiving oral from him. His life was never the same.
He told me about it a while before it became public information. It
ruined my life and his life. We had moved to Houston and were going
to a very large church there when LW was invited to join our church as
music minister. I went to the pastor with my husband and told the
whole story. By this time the UPC had already kicked LW out, but our
church was non-denom so I guess he would have free run there. Our
minister admitted that he knew LW had abused many, many boys over the
years. Most were 18 yrs old, so what could be done. He had huge
talent so why would RH turn him down? I believe LW is still in that
church. Since then I divorced my husband ( he had been doing things
unknown to me our entire marriage stemming from the abuse from LW)
left the UPC never to return and moved as far north as I can. I still
ache in my heart from the years lost and the horrible, horrible heart
ache both I and my exhusband have experience. Trust me, everything
you hear is true and probably much more the UPC has hidden. I just
hope he has not been abusing young men the entire time he has been in
Houston. It is so horrible. Thanks for hearing me.

Wow, I know this was posted some time back but I had to respond. My
father is and has been a UPC preacher for years and I personally have
sat in church listening to the Lanny Wolfe Trio and choirs. I myself
was assaulted 45 years ago by a UPC preacher in the bathroom of his
church in northern Indiana while my dad and mom prayed people through
to the Holy Ghost at the alter. I was 7 at the time and totally
believed everything I had been taught I prayed for Jesus to help but
nobody came! I have since after years of torment in my mind given up
on the UPC and will never be a church member again...homosexuality
runs rampant in their churches and to think they poke fun at the
Catholics! I can feel the terrible pain you suffer and just wanted to
say Jesus still cares it's not his fault what people do even if they

learned going to a church does not make you a christian just as
sitting in your garage all night won't make you a car! The UPC needs
to come clean and ask forgivness from God and try to do something to
help those who have been injured..I still am affected by my situation
and have survived and kept love in my heart only through the grace of
Jesus! You can write beautiful songs, preach great sermons, build big
churches and still be lost in sin! I have had thoughts of removing
these preachers genitals and placing them on the alter in sacrafice
but that would not be socially accepted so instead I recently went
back to the church where I was molested dressed in my Harley shirt and
headband with my long hair hanging down my back!!! the preacher did
not even remember me and I caused no trouble for him..let God take
care of it I guess? May God have mercy on their souls and have mercy
on the UPC and bring them back to where they should be with him. I

Wow. I had to respond to this being that I am Pentecostal, although I am not part of the UPC. I think this topic has strayed from confusion to slander in a matter of a few posts!! How fair is it to say that Pentecostals hide homosexuality and have all this sin that runs rampant? Don't ALL societies have "bad apples" and issues in each and every one? I think this is slander and totally unfair to group all people together, slapping a disrespectful label on them because of a few bad experiences. You know, bad things happen to everyone. No one is immune to pain or to hurt. I think that if you were damaged by someone in church (which I was as well and I never abandoned God because of people), the solution to such a problem is to expose it, heal and move on with your life. Haboring bitterness and hatred does not harm the person who hurt you or really anyone else around you. It only hurts you. Being in church is not about the people around you, it is a personal relationship with Jesus. Using things that have happened is just a crutch to harbor anger. I could have used the same crutch many times, instead, I chose to hold my head up high and keep on keepin' on. Maybe you'll find your own happiness if you do the same? :)

I knew Lanny Wolfe snd his Mother and Sister and they were fine outstsnding people! I believe people can stray awy from God yet it harx for me to believe these things about Lanny! Both he and Marietta were beautiful people of God. Lanny wrote wonderful songs! My prayers are for them!

This is exactly why many people leave this particular denomination. There are specific scriptures that deal with back biting and slanderous accusations. The people who deliberately slandered and destroyed this family will one day answer for their actions. If there was evidence to convict Lanny Wolfe in a court of law, the lies are just that lies. All those who spread this will one day have to answer for them.

The UPC has struggled with issue within in ranks for years. I also was a member attended a northwest UPC Bible college and know of teacher and then the president to leave suddenly and declare homosexuality. The doctrine of the UPC can be very demeaning to women so no wonder the struggle. Also they offfer no grace from the scriptures for sexual sin.

I read your comments today regarding the LW situation. He came to our church in the 1990's in MW MS. Our pastor says he has the Discernment of Spirits, but he missed this spirit. I had read when this all came out and talk that LW was caught either in a public bathroom or public place having relations of sexual nature with a guy. I think the reason he was never convicted because most if not all of the people he has abused were 18+. If any under age kids were molested by this guy they have not come forward and this UPCI church does a really good job of hiding crap like this under the rug because they don't wan t it to affect their ONLINE GIVING $$$$$$$. IF the news flash ever got out on TV which they don't believe in having TV's in your home, it would affect the giving of Millions of $$$ and it would probably be just like the priest and catholics churches. There are pending lawsuits going on every year with UPCI churches and this behavior against children. When you are 18+ it is up to you to PRESS CHARGES. Shortly after the LW scandal broke, our pastor told the church as he was PRESBYTER of the MS district of LW Jackson MS church, that all churches had to take out INSURANCE in case of ABUSE. For example if you are working as a worker of the church with anyone under age of 18 you had to sign a legal document that ask you personal questions about Abuse, if you have ever abused a minor. This story was the talk of the country. People were hurt and shocked at LW behavior. Some are saying that if no LAWSUITS were filed he must be innocent of the charges.....and that is simply wrong. The problem is if No Minors came forward and told he got off scott free. In the state of MS there are no statue of limitations upon Child abuse so any person who is an adult now if they were abuse as children by anyone or LW they can still SUE and they can be brought up on charges and still be arrested and face Court and trial. I am a victim of the UCPI and Clergy abuse , when I was 14 clergy abused me and nothing was done. Today with that INSURANCE in place at each church now forced INSURANCE by the UPCI it protects them so they don't lose $$$$$$$$. I wish that every person who was abused as a child by Clergy of any church would TELL. Not every state has what MS has. In MS THERE IS NO STATUE OF LIMITATIONS upon CHILD ABUSE even sexual Child abuse. IF you are raped as an adult and you claimed your husband said that he was, then he would only have so many years to file a lawsuit since he was over 18 at the time of the rape. I think 7 years. But if you are seeing a DOCTOR and the doctor says that you have repressed any detail of it the statue of limitations starts all over and you can bring charges up against the perp. I so sick and tired of when someone tells their story the church folks all gang up on the one telling the story as if we did something wrong for telling. That is the FUCKING problem with religions, they want you to SHUT UP and keep silent about Sexual Abuse that is because of their CLERGY. But if it's from the world ;they want you to TESTIFY about it. But if a UPCI clergy does the abuse they don't want you talking about it it's considered taboo.

HERE IS THE LATEST I could find on LW
it has been rumored for years that lanny wolfe is gay. and it is my inclination to believe it. he always surrounded himself with young attractive bible-school guys, traveling about the country and sharing hotel rooms with them. his ultimate undoing, as i understand it, came as a result of an encounter with an underage male in a public restroom. somehow he managed to avoid serious legal consequences but it destroyed his marriage. his wife, marietta, was said to be on the verge of divorcing him several times throughout their marriage but when this incident happened, she promptly divorced him and moved back to ohio where she married an african-american minister she had known and dated before marrying lanny. lanny now lives in houston. also, many people (myself included) believe andrae crouch and his twin sister, sandra, are both gay. other names that come to mind, as previously stated, are mark lowry and his pianist, stan whitmire and also jake hess from the gather videos. (don't know if he is even still alive)

First of all, let me say I'm gay and 60 years old. I've been in the church since I was a child. Baptist, UPC, Assembly of God, Church of God ... and sang gospel music professionally for many years, then on to a profession as a singer, teacher, and coach at Disney World.

If homosexuality was accepted as normal as heterosexuality, there would never have been a reason for homosexuals to hide in the shadows. When a natural desire is restricted, it will find anyway to express itself, and that is what happens when a gay man can't be himself. All a gay man wants is exactly what a straight man wants. A relationship where he can express his love. When you call it sin, perversion, sickness and not allow it to be in the open ...... you push them into the shadows and they have nowhere to express their natural desire except in bathrooms, parks, hotel rooms ...

Another brief note, when a gay man cannot be who he is, it can stunt his emotional/sexual growth, and he want to experience what would have been normal when he was a teen, and this often leads to the unfortunate incidents that are unnatural.

Look at Lanny's music. His lyrics were of a tortured nature, wanting desperately to serve God. I personally believe that great music often comes out of great pain. I loved the Lanny Wolfe Trio ... and Lanny wrote some of the best gospel music ever written to this day. Songs we still sing ........

I do not condone molestation, sex without permission, and if Lanny did any of these, I'm sure he has judged himself far more harshly than any of you. It doesn't make the act right.

I'm out, happy, and I look back a all the many, many, many gay people in the church!!! All loved God, but could not come "out" because of the archaic belief that Homosexuality is wrong. It's amazing to me that "religion" can have such a strong hold on folks that they believe so many things that aren't true.

I have not kept up with Lanny and what he is doing now, but he is likely still caught up in the religious beliefs of his youth, and that's hard to change. However, I did it ...... and it can be done.

Thank you. It's been hard because even though we were directly involved and it was acknowledged by LW, people still choose not to believe it. We also personally know many other young men at JCM who LW introduced to sex. Many of these boys have never had sex because the UPC teaches our children from a young age to stay a virgin until marriage. This makes our children very naive and innocent. Perfect for someone like LW who was very "famous" in our church. These boys were in awe of him. And I think that's what hurts me the most. Someone who has such an ability to shape lives but he chose to use that ability to twist their lives and the lives of people who loved them. What is even more distressing is that the UPC never dealt with these boys but rather hid the whole scandal. Left these boys feeling alone and ashamed. Then brought LW Back to JCM to have a reunion concert. I have long since left UPC and will never darken the door. That's a church of lies and cover ups. Everyone knows LW did it but they don't want to face it because of his accomplishments in the organization. It's disgusting. What they need to do is recognize that people are born gay and it can't be changed. I've seen people fast, pray and try everything to not be gay. It isn't a choice and until that is recognized this kind of thing will go on and be hidden. It's just very sad. Many ministers and churches let me down in this situation. But I understand they just can't face it so they hide it. Sad

If you are taking to me you are confused. I have no hate. But as you said it should be exposed and dealt with. It never was. LW never admitted but did step down. Nothing was done to help the young men he hurt. It was hidden not exposed. It's not slander if it's true. I'm sorry you don't like that it happened but if you research there are many men from JCM that this happened to. It's sad that no one is concerned about them. They have gone years with this shame. It's a fact. If it was slander someone would have been sued by LW to stop it. He is just very quiet.
