You folks are utterly amazing in your double-standards. Why aren't
you all threatening to boycott Jonathan's new project? Or burn all
his previous CDs? Or refuse to buy tickets for his concerts (if any
are planned)?
Why aren't you demanding a public apology for his blatant mockery of
the calling of God on his life and for damaging the Southern Gospel
industry by breaking up one family and starting another? When did he
go through his time of repentance and restoration where everyone can
snoop in his private issues?
How can you practically congratulate a Southern Gospel musician for
dumping one woman and marrying another (and obviously having sex with
her, while his first wife is still alive), and at the same time nearly
crucify another Southern Gospel musician (and award winning writer!)
for divorcing his wife and then remaining celibate because he is gay?
You folks are totally messed up in your standards and the way you
exercise compassion.

I won't say it. But I should.
Good question. Same rules should apply in a case of adultery as well. I
wish I could understand why SG fans are so rabid and willing to turn a
blind eye when it's convenient to keep their idol on the throne.
I agree.
James
Secondly, according to fundie standards, getting divorced and remarrying IS
ADULTERY.
Thirdly, for the record, it is reported that there was a relationship with
the other woman before he left his wife - but I cannot say that with first
hand knowledge.
The sisters asked him to leave as a result.
Dack, you're right. Some gag at a nat and swallow the camel - or perhaps I
should say, some gag at a celibate gay, but swallow an adulterous
heterosexual.
Willy
And if gluttony, sloth, drunkenness and pride were criteria for leaving
southern gospel, no one at all would be singing. No one!
I see Dack's point. If a sin is a sin is a sin, then it makes sense to
view Jonathan's actions in the same light as others whose sins have
been pointed out on here. Can't you see the double standard here?
Pour out your compassion for the poor adulterer/divorced guy (gee, I
hope he's taking care of the kids...hope they can work it out...), but
it's ok to keep calling the gays names and vilifying them. From what I
can read on here, I guess there are some sins that are worse than
others. Where's that list, I'd love to see it...

It's not really a double standard and I'll show why below. But
assuming it is, some (many?) here don't have that double standard.
Some past comments:
"Divorce among Christians is forbidden - unless you've been cheated
on (not the one doing the cheating)."
"Anthony doesn't have clean hands with his quickie divorce and
remarriage just a couple of months later. We all commented about the
fact that Burger had to have someone on the side in order to marry so
quickly after his divorce."
"Just because it's popular, doesn't make it right."
"I personally think adulterers are some of the lowest forms
of life and also quite stupid. Not only have they sealed themselves
into sin (can't repent and return to their partner and can't divorce
the second one either). But if their present "partner" (in crime)
cheated in their previous marriage - with them - are they really so
stupid as to think they won't eventually cheat on them too?
Rhetorical question there of course - I already know the answer. They
really *are* that stupid."

I know we've heard it a hundred times from various sources, but I
don't find this idea (that all sin is the same) in Scripture. In
fact, I find the opposite...
John 19:11 Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against
me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that
delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.
There are also many things listed in Scripture as sin - and only some
listed as abomination.
Abomination: loathe, abhor, regard as an abomination, a disgusting
thing, ritually unclean, wickedness.
It seems that sin has the same *reward* (death), but that does not
mean all sin is at the same level of depravity. Sin is against God's
will, but abominations are against His natural design as well.
Allan.
I should say, that I'm by no means convinced of either view... It's
just that I was reading one day and found that "greater sin" verse. I
never really looked into it any further, because we know no sin is
more desireable to be doing than another - so we should avoid them all
of course.
