Who do you all think is the Best Soprano going today? My favorite would
have to be Nicole Watts with The Perrys.

Jeremy-

I respect your opinion, but i have always considered Nicole to be sort of
the weak link of the group. As far as I am concerned there are a handful of
Sopranos that have stood out above the pack over the years, In the list of
the best ever should be Joy Gardner ( from her Downing days), Sue Dodge
from her Speer Days) and Tanya Goodman ( from her Goodman days.) But there
is one soprano who dwarfs all the rest. There has never been a soprano in
southern gospel music who could apporach the pure talent and uncomproised
pitch and tone of Karen Peck Gooch.

My picks would be Sue Dodge, Janet Paschal Lainer, Candy Hemphill Christmas,
Karen Peck Gooch, Tanya Goodman-Sykes, Kim Green Hopper, and I also liked Amy
Roth.

I know I am leaving someone out, but just got back from vacation and I am brain
drained...LOL

Kim Hopper. No question. She tops the list of today's sopranos.
You've also got to give credit to sister Vestal for all time excellence.
A name many of you may not remember, who unfortunately never got a
chance to really prove herself in SG is Jeanie Cameron. She spent
several years with the Lesters, Big Mo and Chosen, and most recently
with the Mike Speck Trio. Truly one of the greatest sopranos of all
time in any field of music.

God Bless

Kim Hopper has the power few people possess: She can single-handedly make a
group! Look at the Hoppers. Now, we all know they've been singing since
dirt was invented, but never with the popularity or sheer power they have
today. I've heard Connie Hopper herself say that they never had this type
of success until they re-arranged the group vocally and inserted Kim. I
always wondered why the Greenes came on the scene so explosively. I never
heard them with Kim, but I bet she's the missing variable in their equation.

The only other soprano I know of with that type of talent is Karen Gooch.
She also, single-handedly, carries New River, but they have a style that's
not pure Southern Gospel. It's not bad at all, just not strictly SG.

I have always loved Vestal Goodman, but really, she should be grouped with
the altos. She's never sung in the Soprano range to my knowledge. If you
asked for my favorite female singer, it would be Vestal, but she's just not
a Soprano.

I agree Karen is good, but I've always thought her voice was more suited to
Country music than Southern Gospel. Same goes for Sheri Easter at the alto
position. I'm glad to see Karen's latest project going in a more Country
direction, because she's more of a natural in that setting.

My favorite soprano in Southern Gospel is Candy Christmas. I'll have to
confess I wasn't a big fan until her latest release _No Turning Back_, which
is simply superb.

Sonya Isaacs Surrett is very good also, but again, she's more of a Country
singer. I think she's more flexible to style variances than Gooch or Easter,
though. In fact, Sonya is every bit as versatile as Shania Twain.

I agree David - Candy Hemphill Christmas is also my favorite Soprano. Sue
Dodge ranks a close second. Janet Pascal (spelling!) was also very good in
her Nelon days.

But for me when it come to a lady singer there is one Queen - Vestal
Goodman. While she is a mezzo soprano now days she doesn't really belong in
this post. But she still brings a style and grace to the platform that only
a true woman of God can bring. Howard tells the story of a day when she was
a quieter (hard to believe) true soprano with more of an operatic style
(also hard to believe).

This is why she has recorded a positive country project.

Really? Cool. I think she certainly has what it takes to be successful in
Country music.
