Baritones:
1. Mark Lowry (I know he gets recognition for his comedy, but listen to
his voice)
2. Glen Allred(over 50yrs.of expierence with a great voice )
Lead:
1.Jimmy Wesson (a terriffic lead ,for many yrs.,now singing tenor for
The Chuck Wagon Gang)
2, Arthur Rice (former Kingsmen bass player & singer, still doing a great
job for The Kingdom Heirs)
3, Brian Lester(a real good singer)
4,Brian Hutson(I think maybe why he isn`t noticed more is that people
compare him to Big Jim)
Tenors:
1.Jerry Martin(with a good voice he deserves more credit)
Pianist:
1.Derrell Stewart
2.Tim Parton(both men deserve more atten.)
Female Singers:
1. Mary Jane Carter
2.Candy Pfeifer
3. Karen Apple(what a voice)
Bass:
Jeff Chapman of the Anchormen is one of the most underrated basses out
there. He's got natural resonance to his voice and excellent ability to
solo and has been developing nicely for several years. Unfortunately, June
30 was his last date with the Anchormen. I read on the web that he has gone
with Ron Blackwood in Pigeon Forge, TN.
Baritones:
I always thought Parker Jonathon suffered from the same problem you say that
Brian Hutson does. People spend too much time trying to compare his emcee
work with Hamill's and never give him enough credit for who he is on his own
merits. He's been with the Kingsmen for 10 years now doing a great job
singing baritone and is one of the best frontmen in the business IMHO. His
style is totally different than Hamill's so I can never see how or why
people try to compare the two, except that Hamill was such a large
figurehead for the Kingsmen for so long. Night after Night, PJ is one of
the most solid people on the stage.
Tenors:
1.Jerry Martin(with a good voice he deserves more credit)
Absolutely!!! He has brought the Kingsmen back up to being in the top line
quartets again. Not trying to compare him to anybody, but he's the best
tenor they've had since Ernie Phillips and one of the best new tenors to hit
the major circuit in a few years.

but you'll have to drop YOUR PANTS
To this list I would add Harold Gilley. It's a shame his group Southern Gold
didn't get going. I wish a major group would add him to their roster.
>>Lead:
4,Brian Hutson(I think maybe why he isn`t noticed more is that people

Brian doesn't cut up like Big Jim, but he has about twice the voice. The
reason he goes unnoticed is because his sound isn't particularly
distinctive. He just does an excellent job.
>>Tenors:
1.Jerry Martin(with a good voice he deserves more credit)<<
You've been talking to Doc, I see. He's another Kingsmen junkie. :o)
Another first rate tenor you don't hear mentioned often is Wally Nelms with
The Statesmen. In fact, you have to hear him downplayed to Rosie Rosell
every time they sing, which is something I wish Hovie could get past. We all
know he's not Rosie, but he's still a fine tenor especially considering that
many tenors lose their range by the time they are 30.
>>Pianist:
1.Derrell Stewart
2.Tim Parton(both men deserve more atten.)<<
Stewart is a show off, which is fine with me because he has the chops to
back it up. I think he already has significant recognition. For years, he
was the only real reason to see The Florida Boys. It's just that Anthony
Burger is an even bigger show off and has faster chops to back it up, so he
gets to reign as piano king in SG. Roger Bennet is just the opposite. With
him it's more a case of finesse and having George Younce brag on him for
years, but I'd say Roger is somewhat over-rated since he seems to be the
default choice among fans when Burger isn't eligible. There are several
other pianists who surpass Roger in terms of speed, showmanship, and even in
his specialty, finesse.
Stan Whitmire and Jerry Kelso are both better than Roger and therefore
under-rated, IMO. If you play piano, compare the print versions of "Wait
'Til You See Me In My New Home" by Roger (from "Heavenly Highway Hymns"/pub.
Homeland) and Stan (from "Old Time Gospel Piano"/pub. Green Hill). You'll
see exactly what I mean. Kelso is fun to watch, and he has some great licks.
Tim Parton never blew me away, although I think he's certainly a very
capable pianist. I don't think he's in the same league as Kelso, Whitmire,
Burger, or even Bennett. Andrew Ishee is very good, but he seems to be
getting some credit when great piano players are discussed, so I wouldn't
say he's underrated. Jeff Stice and Garry Jones have the jazz thing going on
which is intellectually demanding, and their rating among fans is about
correct by my estimation, though perhaps not for the same reason.
>>Female Singers:
1. Mary Jane Carter
2.Candy Pfeifer
3. Karen Apple(what a voice)<<
Candy Christmas is remarkable, and seldom gets mentioned.

I agree with you about Martin, although I never was all that crazy about
Phillips. He was a bit too piercing for me. Jerry Martin is all class,
though, and smooth with his expressions. He's first rate.
Are you sure you didn't just catch him on a bad night? I usually notice
stuff like that, but I haven't ever noticed it with Brian in the 5 or 6
times I've seen them.
Yep. It used to be that you could've seen the Anchormen and it wouldn't
have mattered, because 6 months later they'd have been a totally different
group. The past few years they've been a bit more stable. I think Jeff
Chapman had been there for 10 years and most of the other guys had been
there for several years together too. I really like the tenor (his name
escapes me right now) too. He has a sort of Brian Free sound to his voice.
They always have managed to put together a high-energy, quality sound though
no matter who was there. Ironically, David Hill was with them .........
twice I believe! Maybe that's where he aquired his "stick-with-it"
mannerisms????

Eric Winston - Eric is with Cecil Blackwoods group and has a temendous voice!!
Eric was taught by J.D. Sumner.
Lead:
Rick Price - Rick is also with Cecil's group. Okay now with this one, Rick
would tell people that you can't go by what I say about him because I am biased
(okay, so I am)...but Rick not only has a great voice but also a very good
songwriting ability.
Baritone:
Mark Lowry - People think of Mark as just being funny and that is the only
thing they look at. There is alot more to Mark than just being funny.

Maybe you need to go back and listen to some songs like "The Lost Sheep" (my
personal, all time Hamill favorite) or "He'll Be to You." He could go from
he "heaviest" songs around to things like "Gospel Music" ("there ain't a
lotta polish...") and "Excuses." and sell them both. Additionally, the
Quartet never sounded fuller than when he was singing. Go back to the live
version of "He's All I Need." Here, Jim's certainly not the Hamill of old,
but listen as they repeat the chorus. On the first ending, Surrett is
singing. Now, Surrett is a good singer, but thin like Hudson. Jim comes
up, gives a testimony, repeats the chorus, and absolutely polishes the
ending off. If you listen to both endings, back to back, the sound is
totally different. Jim filled out the Kingsmen sound. He counterbalanced
the thinner, nasal tone of some of the other guys.
I miss him terribly. I'd love to hear him with Jerry Martin.

What can I say? I'm partial to polish. I've always preferred people like
Glenn Payne (who could also "let 'er rip, but was more selective about it)
to Jim Hamill when it came down to the recorded song, although I always felt
Jim was undoubtably the most fun to watch.
After reading your post, I'd say Brian Hutson definitely belongs on a list
of under-rated lead singers. :o)

You know, the other day I was looking thru some tapes and saw a picture of
The Singing Americans right before they broke up. Guess who was in the
group? David Hill. I never knew he was with them.
It's uncanny how many groups that cat has sung with. The tape with the photo
is called _Good Ol' Gospel_ from 1994. It's a various artist tribute to
Mosie Lister, produced by J D Sumner. The line up is the same as their _Live
In Chicago_ recording from 1993, except they have a different lead singer,
piano player, and bass player. Not bad for them to only change three out of
seven guys between recordings. But then Hill came along, and evidently
jinxed the group, so they disbanded. :o)

Bryan Hudson may be an excellent fellow, but he's never going to be
"Kingsmen style." Now I know that no one is going to replace Jim Hamill,
but I think they should have found that type of singer. They are available.
(I'm one, LOL.)
Let's go back twenty three years. Jim Hamill left the Kingsmen to go to the
Senators. I have the "Just in Time" album that they made without him.
Here's what they did. Squire sang Lead, Eldridge sang Baritone, Parrack
was still on tenor, and Ray, of course, on Bass. Now, Squire isn't
identical in style and tone to Hamill, but he is similar. The Kingsmen
still sounded like the Kingsmen. They still had that thick, powerful
sounding lead singer as the signature of the group. That had been the
constant of the Kingsmen for twenty five years.
I was never satisfied with the Kingsmen's personnel changes after around
1990. I can live with PJ, but Chris Collins was not a Kingsmen tenor. Heck,
he was barely a tenor at all. If you listen to the songs when the "band"
sang, you'll find that Randy Miller had a more natural sounding tenor voice.
It seems that the Kingsmen decided that the thinner and nasally-er the
better. That may do for some groups, but it's a turn off to fans of the
classic Kingsmen. They should have stuck with the winning formula instead
of trying to reformulate the entire group. If you'll notice by their most
recent offerings, they have changed their mind and are going back to the
good stuff.

CJB,
It is interesting that you bring up sleeping with a bunch of men on a
bus. Some hidden desires coming to the surface? My guess is that you
would have very much enjoyed sleeping near all of The Kingsmen! This
Christian group discusses Mark Lowry and the harmful (untrue) rumors

Hudson is a good guy, but he is so far below Hamil as a lead that the group
always seems to be just off of their mark. I think Hudson would be a great
baritone because he has the range to go up and nail the ends for the laid
back lead singer. I would love to see the Kingsmen find a let 'er fly lead
singer witha Hamil mentality, move Hudson to Baritone and find an emcee. PJ
is killing them in this department. They are an emcee and a lead singer from
re-estab,ishiong themselves.

She insulted me pretty bad, so I did the same to her. Kathy is a really
boring person. Well, I recall telling her in one of the e-mails how
boring she was and that I felt sorry for her husband. She e-mailed me
back and told me that I had made her cry because her husband had passed
away... (True or not, I don't know.)Our arguing soon wound down. I e-
mailed her back and said I was sorry. We finally apologized and tried
to make peace.
In the very last e-mail Kathy sent me, she asked, "Would it be all
right if I e-mail you again?" I e-mailed her back and told her "that
would be okay." I really didn't want to hear from her again, but I was
trying to be nice. This was back in November of 1999. Neither Kathy,

absolutely no correspondence until a couple of days ago, in this
