I think Richard actually sung bass when he was in the Stamps, odd as that
sounds. They had two bass singers for a while when J D's voice was giving
him some trouble.

JD never intended to go on tour with Elvis. He intended for the Stamps to be
sold as a unit without him and with Sterban singing bass. JD has written in
his book that he thought it would be a great financed vacation for him. But
Elvis insisted that JD be part of the group. JD maintained Sterban who
actually did most of the singing. JD sat there and did what Elvis called the
" '69 endings" where he would slide through three or four octaves sometimes.

No Anon, while Richard Sterban did sing with The Stamps Qt. at the same
time as J.D.Sumner,they were both bass singers with the group. I heard
them in person & the group consisted of Roy McNeil;tenor,Donnie
Sumner;lead,Ed Enoch;Baritone,J.D. Sumner;bass & Sterban sang on some
songs,I think this was not too long after J.D. had surgery, was the
reason for two basses.

Yes. The Stamps backed up Elvis for some time before his death.
The Stamps at that time consisted of Bill Baize singing Tenor.
Donnie Sumner singing Lead. Ed Enoch singing baritone and
Richard Sterban singing bass.

In my opinion, this was the best all around quartet ever. I say all
around if you consider harmony, style, material and performance.

Their album "Something Special" on Heart Warming Records
from 1972 may be the best SG album ever produced. It had
some "heavy" songs on it: "Redemption Draweth Nigh", When
It's My Time", "Ten Thousand Years" and "I Should Have Been
Crucified" among others.
