Ticketmaster are essentially legalised ticket scalpers. By
gaining a monopoly on an event allows them to charge exhorbitant
"convenience" fees. To add insult to injury, when I questioned
why the large surchages, the telephone operator boasted about
the money going into her pocket and they charge extra because
they can (due to the monopoly). This is disgraceful in my
opinion. BOYCOTT TICKETMASTER please folks if you agree.

As well, they also screwed me over. I was going to be gone the weekend
the GGDolls tickets went on sale for the New World Music Theater (Tinly
Park, IL) so I gave my friend my debit/credit card to call them and
reserve 3 tickets. She ended up waking up at 1PM (they went onsale at
noon) and we got fairly crappy seats. I just thought it was because they
were popular;). The bill was $180 something. I thought, wow, that's kind
of expensive, but I was willing to pay it to see the GGDolls. The credit
card company ended up calling me because her address didn't match my
credit card, but I was never told about the message on the voicemail, so
they cancelled the tickets. So we called like 2 weeks before the concert,
and got even crappier seats. When we got there, they handed us 6 tickets.
I was like, what, we ordered three, not once, but TWICE. How the HELL
could they fuck that up? So not only were they cancelled, but we had been
forced to get 6 tickets so we got some of the worst seats possible. Not
to mention we sold the tickets for $10 a piece, a $20 loss on each one,
totalling $60 down the drain. Not to mention very shitty seats and we
couldn't understand a word Mark McGrath or John were saying.

I second the vote to boycott ticketmaster.

Really?! I only paid $18.50 for my ticket (kind of weird - at the show,
the t-shirts cost more than the ticket!) . . . ??? I had always thought
that was a pretty good price since some shows charge like $30+ for a
ticket, I think.

Well, actually, I think I had to pay around $2.00 extra for the handling
or labor or something.

That is strange. I got tickets from ticketmaster for 2 goo goo dolls shows
this summer.
For the St. Louis, MO venue @ Riverport Amphitheatre it was $27.50 per
ticket plus a $4.50 sur-charge on the tickets for a grand total of $32 per
person and we were in row A (which was the closest row you could buy, there
was 3 or 5 rows that were the ticket giveaway ones)

and for the other concert we went to which was the State Fair in
Springfeild, IL tickets were $18.50 per ticket with no sur-charge. But in
buying those tickets we were a day late, so we were near the back, but it
was still great seats!!!

I've never had much of a problem with getting tickets, but I am the type to
get in line at the local ticket outlet. The best way to do it, not bothering
with calling some number that is always busy.

I saw 3 Goo shows this fall, 1 of which I bought tickets for from
ticketmaster.com. They do charge a big handling fee, and especially if
you order online. I think my Atlanta tickets ended up being $35 a
piece (but I bought 4th row tix for $50 a piece later from another guy
and sold mine). Then I saw them in Knoxville and the tickets were only
$20 a piece. I think it was the same when I saw them at MSU. So if
you look at that, that's three shows that are basically the same and
the one sold by ticketmaster costs a lot more. It's not fair but I
guess there's not much anybody can do about it.
Julie :)
P.S. Speaking of ticketmaster.com, I got 4th row seats to see Fiona
Apple next month! Yay!

Yeah, I remember Pearl Jam tried boycotting Ticketmaster a few years
back because they were outraged at the same practices you all have been
describing. I guess nothing much came of it if the same things are
still occuring. I went to 2 Goo shows in '99, and I don't remember the
surcharges being really outrageous, but then I always just go and buy
mine in person.

perhaps the Ticketmaster "convenience" charges vary from state
to state. They are certainly large in California if you order
over the telephone or online. One ticket costing $21.50 becomes
$30.75 with their surchages - a 43% addition to the ticket price.
This does not include postage.

As someone mentions, with the monopoly, there is not much
an individual can do about this aside from not seeing the band.
The venues and promoters should have more influence. BTW, I've
written to a couple of venues (e.g. The Warfield on SF).

Yep, I went to Mervyn's California for PM5K. They were only $15 a piece.
No problems, and good seats. Err..mosh pit I should say.

I wouldn't ever buy tickets over the phone or online. I'd say the most
convienent and cheapest way to go and get them in person.

Jennie, That's pretty cool! I like Oasis a lot, their album "What's The
Story, Morning Glory?" is awesome! Have you ever heard that song they
sing, "Talk Tonight?" I think it's a b-side, I have it on a cassette
single somewhere. Anyway, that's my favorite Oasis song, that and
"Don't Look Back In Anger"...

I had the same mark up to buy tickets in Pennsylvania - $20 tickets actually
cost $30. And yeah, I'd love to boycott Ticketmaster but that means never
seeing any major bands. I thought there were laws in this country against
monopolies - how did Ticketmaster ever get around them? (Wasn't there some sort
of congressional hearing several years ago?) As things are now, Ticketmaster
gets richer and richer and I go to see less and less concerts.

less fractious now--last week on the "music news" on the local
alternative station, Noel was commenting that he got Liam to agree not
to drink before shows anymore, but to wait until after when they were
in their "posh hotel rooms."

That's why I love the Gallagher Brothers. Attitude is everything and it
is interesting to see what battle is coming next with those two.
