Toendertijd is er door de VARA een radio uitzending verzorgd van het
Pinkpop-optreden van de Earring. Deze zeer goede opname koester ik nog
steeds. Het waren vier nummers die uitgezonden werden: Mad Love, I need
love, Radar Love en Just like Vince Taylor. Wie weet of er nog meer,
kwalitatief goed materiaal, is van Pinkpop 1977?

Roel,

Last winter i tried to find the complete Pinkpop 1977 gig you mentioned.
They played for almost 2 hours and only 40 minutes were broadcasted.
It was not the VARA but KRO radiostation.
I had some contact with Mark van Stakenburg (also Leidsekade Live) but he
told me that there weren't any recordings left of that gig.

Believe me: KRO recorded the complete concert and it is in their archive in
a very good shape.......

Greetings Gerard

Gerard, isnt it the way KRO works: You can phone them up to request a hard
copy of the tape?
I did that once for an episode of "Keeping Up Appereances" and they charged
me about 75
guilders for a 4 hrs. VHS tape....
I would love to pay 75,- for that one golden earring tape I can tell ya! :)

Daan,

Never tried that before.
I only had contact with MS.
Probably they made a tv recording too.
But i dont know that for sure.

On the Leidse Kade site you can vote for a band or gig you wanna hear.

If they're anything like the BBC in England they would have thrown it

What I Know is that the Keep everything In Good Shape, for special programs
etc, I Knew A Guy who could go into the wherehouse and said everything was
there, sorted at broadcasted date..... so hopefully there still the earring
tapes!

there are even tapes of shows that were recorded but never broadcasted, sure
it is possible that some tapes are dissapeared, I Know that if your looking
for the tapes of the huizen gig from huizpop '89 you wont find ity in the
archive, because it's in private hands so maybe it's possible that the
Pinkpop tape is also in private hands

but we can always give it a try to vind the pinkpop gig, or maybe some other
great recordings, what about the Gig they did in the concertgebouw in
Amsterdam in 1970, with songs like Big Tree Blue Sea, The Loner, Eight Miles
High, Pigeons To The Sky, As Long As The Wind Blows, Everyday's Torture,
Song Of A Devil's Servant, and other old songs! I'd Love to hear such
recording!

Hai group,

This is not completly correct, Huizpop was recorded by Veronica, not KRO.
I don't have the original tape but I have a copy of the original, the
originals are still archified, or better I hope so, Veronica is not saving
things as long as the KRO does (cost a lot off money)
Veronica recorded a lot of shows more, The Flint in Amersfoort, The
Vliegermolen in Den haag (I believe) Franeker (is recorded completly but I
could not lay my hand on it. if I am right this recording is lost), Avro
recorded in 77 a concert in I think Zwolle completly (Audio and Video) The
first beachconcert in Scheveningen excist or at teast has excist completly
to(without the newsbreak in Mission Impossible)
There must more especially by Veronica but a lot of it has been lost.
And also the concert they give in the Rai, Amsterdam for Jan Rietmans
program is recorded completly.
I am not gonna promise anything but, I still have some contacts left at the
radio so I will see if I can do anything.

Greetings,

I think that there is more than we could ever imagine...
The radiostations in North America (Canada!!), Germany, United Kingdom and
France (Montreux festival).
Some of it got lost during the years but i cant believe the bootlegs we all
own are the only recordings that survived...

For instance 1975: the 3 radio recordings from the United States.
Winterland, KSAN, Long Island (?).

By the way: has anyone ever seen the Seven Tears documentary from
which Nick made that gorgeous bootleg? And has anyone ever heard the
concert that was originally meant as their first live album (1972?). I
always thought it was a big shame their first real live album wasn't
in the original line up. Not that I want to put Eelco Gelling down. He
did some truly wonderful soloing on the '77 album, but I to me it's
always a one occasion thing. His tone is just a bit on the harsh side
for the Earring IMO. A real Earring concert is as far as I am
concerned something where George Kooymans is soloing his sometimes
tender, sometimes aggressive way to the sky, above that sensuous tone
of his above the dark earthly bass of Rinus. But I love the concert
bootlegs with Robert Jan Stips though. He added something very rich to
the sound of the Earring. Despite of the stories I always hear, I have
the feeling that he and George responded marvellously on each other
musically. Not having been there myself and only judging from the
concerts I have on tape and cdr, I must say Switch, Latin Lightin' en
Love Is A Rodeo became utterly remarkable happenings. George
undoubtedly (that is as far as I am concerned) played some of the most
amazing solos in his very existence in that period.

I Thought The first plans of a live Album were in 1970, of the concert in
the Concert gebouw, as a support act of Colloseum, but i'm not sure about
that,
But early 1972 was maybe a great time for a live album, with Live songs like
Thousend Feet Below, Jangalane, From heaven From Hell, Just A Little Bit Of
Peace (a shame that it's never been released as a official electric live
version, great song), The Loner, Back Home, Song Of A Devil's Servant,
Please Go, everyday's Torture and The Road Swallowed Her Name, i think this
would be a great Live album!

Yeah Niels. I heard the rumour about all the unreleased, quality tapes
George has lying somewhere in his cellar;-). But anyway I'd love to
hear a concert from the time of Eight Miles High, Wall Of Dolls or
Seven Tears, since these are probably my favourite Earring albums. It
was also very obvious they did very interesting things with tracks as
I'm Gonna Send My Pigeons To The Sky and Big Tree Blue See. Of course
the Big Trees from the Robert Jan Stips period also were rather
fascinating.
So did you (or anyone else of course) ever hear a version of Song Of A
Devil's version? I am truly curious how that would sound.....

It's hard to be shure what one heard some 30 years ago....

The beginning of the 70th were (for me) the most interesting period: there
was more adventure due to the long improvisations on 8MH, later on "Pigeons"
and Big Tree...

I remember hearing Everydays Torture life, but I'm not sure about Song of...
If ever I heard it it has to be the longer version of the 8MH album...

And I know Everydays Torture was played life on TV one time (with Cesar) but
I have no idea If the tape I made from that still exists (after 30 years of
moving and some devorcements).. if ever I find it I'll tell you all on this
newgroup

Would be great to relive the performances of that time however even on
record its not the experience of a life concert.. I got this summary from
???? called Broadcasted Vol 1and it gives some idea.. but much more
interested would be songs they never played so much

And if the "George tapes" really exists we have to wait for the split of the
band or their death before they will show up... it took the Beatles 30 years
after so....

don't think I'll live that long..... only "50" now....

Hey Everyubody, first of all, Broadcasted was my work..... and i think i'm
kind of proud of it, however it's a documentary with all the standard songs
they played in that period, i choosed for the fact to put only songs that
are broadcasted on radio and TV on it, so the quality is quite alright!

about Song Of A Devil's Servant,
I Can sya as a 21 year old, that it was played live, i've got a pretty worse
bootleg with the song on it, it starts with a 6-7 minute flute solo, then
about 2 minutes of guitar solo (i'll listen to the song tomorrow!) and then
The song itself, unfortuantly the song is incomplete, the last 2 minutes are
missing, I'd do a murder to get a good and complete version of this song
live, it was about 14-15 minutes long i think!

Everyday's torture, is played live very regulairy, i'm almost sure that it's
played in the late 60's and through the early 70's until authem 1972, after
that they had a new set (1000 Feet, Big Tree, From heaven, Brother Wind,
Stand By me, 8 miles high/ pigeons to the sky and i'm not sure about the
reprise, i think it must be Money/back Home or The Road Swallowed Her Name)
later it was played again in the Stips period with the tryouts for the big
Ahoy concert, it was in the first set, along with songs like Just A Little
Bit Of Peace, Please Go, Jangalane, Back Home, Heaven From Hell And 1000
Feet

another song about which i'd like to hear in it's live version is You're
Better Off Free, It must have a really Great solo at the end........

Well, It;s time to go to bed now (0:21) so,

I would love to hear that extended version of Song Of A Devil's
Servant. It was always one favs. As you probably already know, there
was a version of You're Better Off Free on the Seven Tears Special. I
had a copy of the song on mp3, wich I unfortunately lost when my last
computer got ill of some unknown worm....And I didn't have a cd burner
at that moment. So that's a real shame! It was an interesting version,
with a somewhat longer guitar solo than we know from the studio album.
I know Everydaı's Torture from the '76 tour. It was nice, but I didn't
think it could really compete with the brilliance of the studio
version. It could be nice to hear an acoustic version of the song
though....

Yeah, it's a shame that songs and improvisations eventually got so
much shorter in general.... I am really jealous of you that you were
present at those early concerts:-). Not that they didn't make
wonderful music in later years, but those were probably The Heydays of
the band. I hope you'll find the tape with the Everyday's Torture
version some day... I am really curious about it:-) It's true that
joining a concert is a unique experience, but I am also aware that by
hearing recordings of concerts I went to, I noticed details I
overheard when I was attending those shows.
Regarding those lesser known songs: can you remember (or anyone else
of course) they ever played Landing, Silver Ships or Angelina?
If the so-called "George tapes" exist, I hope they will be released a
little sooner....:-). So did anybody ever hear the version of Radar
Love where Barry and George did shared vocals? George talked about
this in the Haagsche Bluf book.

Mechteld

PS Not that this has anything to do with the topic of rare live
recording...But it's strange there are so little female posters in
this group lately. I always heard Golden Earring was more than most
rock and hard rock bands a ladies thing..:-).

about the "george Tapes" they do excist, vincent the former sound technician

vincent had all the tapes, but what is happened with them now that he's away
with the earring, no idea, vincent has recorded these tapes since 1975, what
has happened before i don't know.... I hope, that there still some good
recordings left of the early period, what about a cool Live album from out
of the Earrings period, you may choose, with or without Barry, i rather
prefer with barry, because i think that Miricle Mirror is an excelent album
to play live...... pretty good songs so, lets hope.....

they never played played Landing, Silver Ships and Angelina. In those days
the play the more heavy tracks & the long songs on which they could
improvise...

I do not want to sound that old but yes.. thoese (70th) were the best days
for going to their concerts...

... for the sexe affinity discussion... here were and are always lots of
woman going to their concerts.. although the type of music is more male

Dear Henk,

I could imagine there is something to improvise in Silver Ships...:-).
But I am very happy with the studio version. The same goes for
Angelina and Landing. Maybe Angelina could be a new item for the
acoustic shows though. I wonder how George would interprete the
painful lyrics these days...
About female Earring fans: yes, the concerts are still filled with
them. I just noticed there aren't too many female posters around these
days in this newsgroup. I remember the large number of posts of Sarah,
The Vanilla Queen though... But maybe ladies generally prefer the

Niels, I indeed hope those tapes have been saved. Maybe the Earring

possession.
Of course I prefer the Barry line-up over the Frans Krassenburg

every very early live recording would be something of a real discovery

Well being a female and mostly at the front row, I must say I mostly prefer
male Earring fans who throw their beers backwards instead of forwards.
Although if's it's very warm some cold water could be pleasant;-);-).

I got the great intro of mad love is coming from Pinkpop 1977.
It is about 30 seconds and i made a mp3 file of it.
If you like to hear it, i can mail it to anybody who wants it.

Lay down in your chair, sunglasses, nice sunny weather and enjoy...
