Yes, they are brilliant. I think of them as the finest UK pop trio from
the 80s (and no, I haven't forgotten about XTC). "Hats" from late 89 /
early 90 is a masterpiece, and I don't throw that word around lightly.
Paul Buchanan recently was included in a Mojo reader's poll of the top
100 singers of all time. I can't remember where he placed, but it is
good that people remember him. He truly is one of the best singers and
writers in rock.
I suggest listening to "Hats" and "A Walk Across the Rooftops" first.
The third album, "Peace at Last," is more of an acquired taste, in
the same way that Peter Gabriel #2 (1978) is an acquired taste. It
is essential, but listen to the others first.

They are from Scotland.

(XTC's "Apple Venus vol. 1" - BUY THIS! And while you're at it buy me another
one cause I've worn the bits off my CD.)

Yes, I know.

Sorry, I can hardly afford cds for myself. But I'm glad you like it.
I think it is their best album in years <g>.

This post is a joke, right? Or maybe they put a M+M cd in your Blue
Nile jewel case by mistake. M+M sound nothing like the Blue Nile
at all.

...and PC loves 'em too. They are extremely well respected by quite a
cross-section of other artists...Steve Hogarth, Neil Finn, Nick Kelly...
As well as what comes up in this thread, Tony...you may also like to
check out a thread from DejaNews in this NG from last year. The thread
was called 'LISTEN TO THIS' (yeah, it was in caps - although I don't
think that's entirely relevant when you're searching for it? :)

I have to say, I've seen some *bizarre* postings on this NG over the
past 18 months...but hats off...that one goes in at number one with a
bullet!
Anyhoo...to answer Tony's original question...
Peace At Last is quality. Although the album as a whole has never quite
hung together as a complete project for me, seemingly losing a little by
falling between two stools...are we The Blue Nile or Paul Buchanan
singer/songwriter? Strangely enough, I really love the two main acoustic
based songs which aren't really 'classic' Nile, sound/texture-wise...BUT
The Blue Nile will always be epitomised by 'Hats' in my heart - twist my
arm and I would probably call it my album of all time! There debut
album, 'A Walk Across The Rooftops', has some wnderful moments, but for
me it just paves the way for the glory of 'Hats'.

The other quote was from the guy from Tears for Fears.
I got the album because of the Phil Collins comment. I still listen to it. I
love it, although it is very very sad, muddy music.
