I have that one - "Live In Chicago 1978". I'd give it an 8 of 10 for
sound quality. The only problem with my copy is a scratch which makes
Ripples unlistenable... sigh...

You can find this on CD called _From the Mouth of the Monster_.
I was there the next night... The mirror show was something to see,
but I liked the same show better in Milwaukee, WI, at the summerfest
grounds, right on the shores of Lake Michigan - a beautiful night
with a gigantic harvest moon.
There were cars pulled over on the Lakeshore Drive for miles in
either direction, as it looked like a UFO was landing in the lake -
what with lasers and six servo-controlled 10x10 foot mylar mirrors.
They did amazing things with the lasers off the mirrors that wasn't
done later indoors at the Uptown, probably for lack of room.
Wowser...

Ther was one which was broadcast on Radio 1 (UK) from Knebworth which
was fantastic. Unfortunately some toerag broke into my car and stole
the tape (plus some other tapes - nothing else). I'd pay good money
for another copy.
And if I ever get my hands on the b*****d that pinched my tape ......

good)

I've just come back from Italy, where I picked up a CD entitled "Roma
18th April 1972" (I think that was the date - the cd's in the car). It
has The Knife, Musical Box, Stagnation, plus stuff like Happy the Man
and so on. sound quality's not great, but the stories between songs
are nice. Plus PG translates all the song titles into Italian.
Certainly gives a wonderful atmosphere of what Genesis were like live
in those days (having been 6 years old at the time I wasn't there).

I also have a copy of that show, I got the boot in 1979. It's called Live From The Mouth
Of The Monster and the quality is just shy of Seconds Out. I could dub you a copy if
you're interested. Perhaps we could trade some stuff. E-mail me if interested.

I have a portion of that concert on a vinyl boot from 1980. I remember it being VERY
GOOD. As far as the Chicago 78 show goes, I have a Boot called From the Mouth Of The
Monster on Slipped Disc Records and it is immaculate.

I know EXACTLY how you feel. When Marillion played at the Cabaret here
on the Clutching At Straws your, I recorded the show off the radio...
less than a year later some bastard broke into my car and took my stereo
and all my tapes. I didn't care about any of the tapes but that one -
the only irreplacable one... ARGH! 8 years later and I still get all
worked up over it...
- Jim
Aaagh! You are talking about my favorite Genesis period......
I have both the CD version of their 1978 tour recorded in Chicago and a tape of
their U.K. performance, as recorded on the King Biscuit Flower Hour.

A two CD set from a performance in Chicago, IL (U.S.) from Oct 13, 1978:
It is on the Great Dane label (whatever that is) out of Italy. I paid $40
U.S. (used).
Here is my review of the CD:
CD Title:
Genesis Follow You Follow Me - Live At The Uptown Theatre - Chicago October
13th, 1978.
Sound quality:
Fair to good
Song List:
CD 1:
1. Eleventh Earl Of Mar
2. In The Cage
3. Burning Rope
4. Dancing With The Moonlit Knight (with a little bit o' The Musical Box)
5. The Musical Box (closing section)
6. Ripples
7. Deep In The Motherlode
8. One For The Vine
Disk One Highlights:
Track 4. 'Dancing With The Moonlit Knight' is superb. This was a real treat
for me. This was the first live rendition that I had heard. Phil's voice
cracks during this song, but little matter. He does the ultimate respect to
Peter with his performance. The only word that comes to mind is passion.
Track 6. 'Ripples' is also very good.
Track 7. 'Deep In The Motherlode' Since this was the first live version of
this song that I have heard, I may be biased here, but I thought it was very
well done.
CD 2:
1. SQUONK
2 Say It's All Right Joe
3. The Lady Lies
4. The Cinema Show
5. In That Quiet Earth
6. Afterglow
7. Follow You Follow Me
8. Dance On A Volcano
9. Los Endos
10. (Encore) I Know What I Like In Your Wardrobe
Disk Two Notes:
SQUONK: Lackluster performance by Phil. There are better versions of this
song (i.e.: Seconds Out)
Say It's All Right Joe: A previous post mentioned Phil being kind of 'cocky'
in front of American audiences. It shows in his intro to this song and the
Cinema show. The instrumental at the end was new and intriguing. (Another
'first' for me though!)
The Lady Lies: The most underrated Genesis song ever released. Very well
done, although I like Daryl's guitar work better in the UK version. This is
the only Genesis song that still gives me goosebumps. The piano (synth?) at
the end gets me every time.
The Cinema Show: I really like this version (sans the long intro by Phil).
Phil gives a modern version of the 'Romeo and Juliet' story and gets a bit
cocky with it. The bass pedals really stand out and keep you interested until
Tony;s keyboards kick in with that searing synth. Chesters drum work (and
Phil's? It sounds like Phil is on the drum kit with Chester) is superb. The
synth chorals add the perfect touch to a magnificent performance.
Follow You Follow Me: The performance of this song sounded a bit tired.
Dance On A Volcano: Chester and Daryl show the respect this song deserves with
a spirited intro. This song is as good if not better than the 'Seconds Out'
version. (As an aside - this song has the only recording of a mistake by Tony
that I have heard. I guess he is human! )
If you can find this CD for under $50 U.S. it's worth it, especially if there
are songs on this CD that you have never heard live.
The booklet inside the CD has the following:
"We bring to the attention of the performing artists, components of the musical
group, as indicated on the back side of this album cover, that upon publication
of the present phonographic recording, the deposit of a sum for each copy made
as fair consideration has been made on their behalf and/or on behalf of their
assignees as provided for under article 80 and following L. /22/4//1941 n0 633.
This deposit has been made in the form of a passbook savings account with the
Banca Popolare di Milano AG. 21. held in the GREAT DANE RECORDS S.r.l. office
and will be transferred to the legitimate owners upon specific request."
The '0' following L. /22/4//1941 n, is in superscript format (as in 'degrees')
So Tony, Mike, Phil, Chester, and Daryl - have you claimed this?!!! Have you
seen this deposit?
I for one sure hope so.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
U.K. Performance: As the announcers says - 'their only live performance in the
U.K. that year'.
Song List:
1. Burning Rope
2. Ripples
3. The Fountain Of Salmacis
4. The Lady Lies
5. Follow You Follow Me
6. Dance On A Volcano - Drum Solo - Los Endos (medley)
This is the best live performance that I have ever heard by Genesis, bar none.
Phil's vocals on 'Ripples' are beautiful, Daryl's guitar work in 'The Fountain
Of Salmacis' and 'The Lady Lies' are unforgettable. I won't give a song by
song analysis of this performance. They are all A+. Forget the price, if you
can find a copy of this, grab it!
Will someone please beg the powers that be to include it in the box set? I've
darn near wore out my tape!
I can only imagine what this would sound like remastered in digital format!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
One constant between both performances was the wonderful sound produced by
Tony's synthesizer on the '...and then there were three...' songs. What was
this synthesizer? For me, this 'searing' sound will forever be linked to this
golden era of Genesis music.

That was the Arp 2600, run through distortion, chorus, echo, etc. I agree;
it's a great synth sound.
BTW, Tony's 2600 was modified by Dave Simmons, who later created the Simmons
Drum Kits. As for what was modified, I no longer have the 1978 Contempory
Keyboard issue that featured TB. Check one of the Genesis web sites, they may
have a posting of the article.
Hope this helps!

he didn't go into specifics about the ARP modifications (trade secrets),
but he did say that they added an arpeggiator. Same thing for his
Polymoog: it had been customized somewhat, but he didn't give details.
