Question - why is this being run in competition with the existing
Genesis IRC channel on EFnet #paperlate ?

Please don't tell me it's because of the childish in-fighting that's
been going on...

Wow... I honestly have no idea where you're even coming from.
You're a rather strange fellow, Gary. I've seen you on the channel a
number of times over the past few days. Except for some reason, you
always come in, ignore the fact that I'm there, leave immediately, and
then almost immediately log off from IRC so I can't /MSG you a Hello.
(Can't stay for a "hello," you rude bastard?)

I suppose one of these lengthy, detailed, information filled 2
second visits led to your "finding out" the purpose behind our channel's
existence.

Let me make this clear.

#GenesisIRC is managed by Matt Levitt (irc nick: Slipprman) and
myself, Ron Katzir (irc nick: Rael). It was *not* started as a personal
squabble with Shawn Bishop, head operator of #Paperlate (irc nick:
Collins). It was, however, a rebellion against his lack of skill at
managing an IRC channel.

Though I personally dislike Mr. Bishop strongly, and I don't
believe Matt likes him too terribly much, any personal differences of
opinion with him have long ago been settled. We've agreed to disagree
long ago.

Matt and I decided to start #GenesisIRC after spending several
hours sitting on #Paperlate and watching Mr. Bishop's IRC automatons
("bots") repeatedly spit the text "What happened to my @ps?" to the
channel, thereby making any intelligible discussion almost impossible.

#GenesisIRC exists because we (Matt and I) believe we can create a
channel that's more hospitable to Genesis fans who enjoy IRC, and at that,
a channel that's better managed.

To that end, we've picked a channel name that makes the channel
more obviously a channel for Genesis fans, and we've made it our official
policy to only use our powers as operators (the power to set bans, etc)
against people who specifically act to disturb the channel and/or its
visitors. We've been told by several users that Mr. Bishop has in the
past abused his position as operator to great lengths in settling his
personal grievances with them.

Additionally, unlike #Paperlate, we only use one channel bot.
(nickname: "Lawnmower.") I won't bore anyone with specifics here, but
this effectively eliminates the possibility of a deadlock state in which
several bots sit on a channel together and continually spit out messages
requesting an operator flag.

Well, there it is. #GenesisIRC is an attempt made by Matt Levitt
and myself to provide a better managed channel for Genesis fans than
#Paperlate. I can honestly say that I personally have a lot more
experience with IRC than Mr. Bishop does. (In fact, I did probably 90% of
the set up work involved with the first #Paperlate bot, SarahJane.) And
that, because of this, there's a fair chance that a channel with me as one
of the operators is more likely to run smoothly than a channel with Mr.
Bishop as its head operator.

We hope that, within a few weeks, #GenesisIRC emerges as the more
pleasurable IRC experience for Genesis fans. If it does not, we'll
certainly be glad to do the Squonk and fade away into a giant pool of
cybertears. :) If it does become the more popular channel, however,
Shawn Bishop and all other #Paperlate users are certainly welcome to visit
it at any time.

Now... I know a lot of you, as newsgroup readers, feel like you
have to hit that "Follow-Up" button now and flame me. I'd like it if you
stopped yourselves. Instead, visit #GenesisIRC a few times. And then
tell me what you dislike about it.

Yeah, I probably am rather strange, but who cares?

Well that's nice innit? Straight in with the childish attacks. Thanks
for already helping me prove my case Ron!

Oh no, stupid me not wanting to say "Hi" to you!

For your information, not that you need to know, I only logged in to see
who was around and if it was someone I knew and wanted to talk to I'd
stay.

Do you really think I'd want to talk to you after what you've said?

>(Can't stay for a "hello," you rude bastard?)

Nope. But well done with all this childish behaviour - just makes me
want to jump right in and log into Genesis IRC to talk to your wonderful
self.

Oh, I'd just like to point out here that I got an email from someone a
few days ago (who'll remain anonymous) generally saying that the new
channel *was* created because a few people didn't like Shawn and wanted
to split the channel up.

Sounded like childish fighting to me - so I said so. Was I rude to you
anywhere Ron? Was I? Would you like to point out the exact quote? Didn't
think so.

Aww look, more childish comments against Shawn.

Are you sure you're not on my side?

So during the times I've been there having a discussion about Genesis
with *polite* people (Hey, even Trevor's polite and nice to talk to
compared to this email I'm replying to! Don't take offense Trev :-) I've
never seen it?

And who cares about bots and @ps? Oh no, without those we'd all have to
sit on the channel and talk to eachother without being able to do what
we've logged on to do - change the topic (wow!) and ban people (wheee!)

I thought the point of IRC was to talk to people not get all power
hungry.

[Lots more cracks at Shawn and more rubbish snipped]

Oh dear, I really can't be arsed anymore - case proven methinks.

Gary

Oops, deleted me sig. I can see you'll all be really annoyed about that
;-)

Having been on both sides of the IRC-clique thing (but in the past and
unrelated to Genesis), I have to concur. The #paperlate folks should
really quit complaining about the new kids making their own channel.

No, they aren't. I've never thought of "strange" as an attack of
any sort. In fact, personally, I tend to take it as a compliment.

And I think everyone who's ever read any of your posts would agree
that you really *are* a rude shit. No attack is necessary to substantiate
that position.

In fact, I think it's clearly demonstrated that you regularly make
sure it's a well substantiated claim yourself...

Excused. I can see how flaming me repeatedly in a newsgroup is
too great a demand on your time to allow you to press three keys (H, I,
and ENTER) as you drop by my channel.

> Nope, wasn't Shawn. You've just showed yourself up again.

Sure. Many it was one of the voices in your head, then.

> Yeah, just as welcome as me at the moment I bet.

If you behave on my channel as you behave here, I *will* set a ban
for you. Newsgroups are (for the most part) unmoderated, so flame wars do
happen. My channel, however, is not only moderated, but quite skillfully
so.

By "replacement" I mean I'd like to think that, eventually,
#GenesisIRC *will* be the only existing Genesis channel. I think my
announcement stated that clearly enough. I don't think *you*
misunderstood it either, Gary.

> Actually I have, and quite a few times and still found it to be full of

Well, let's check by your hostname. It's awfully distinctive.

% cat eggdrop.log | grep congo
% cat eggdrop.log.yesterday | grep congo

Gee, no visits found. You're apparently just straight out making
this part up. I'll admit that unkind words have been spoken on the
channel against Shawn, and about you (largely in response to the comments
you've made in this newsgroup).

But this is the Internet, Gary, and people are entitled to express
their opinions freely here.

I think it's obvious that people who dislike Shawn and like
Genesis will rush to become regulars on a Genesis channel he doesn't
operate. And I'm not about to attempt to curtail my users' opinions of
him. I also think that most reasonable people, including people who
prefer #Paperlate, would see your attacks on me as excessive, and would
dislike you for them.

> Plus I've talked to you as well and after this I *really* don't want to
> repeat the process.

If I recall, we've had a brief conversation in which you talked
incessantly about how your web page is the best Genesis web page in
existence and it gets the most hits of any others. I recall being rather
impressed. Since it has become evident that you literally make up support
for the flames you post in newsgroups, though, I'd be willing to bet your
counter number is faked, too.

Rather pitiful.

very immature. So on behave of myself and this newsgroup I would like to say
SHUTUP. Noone wants to hear you two bitch at each other in this newsgroup so
take it somewhere else. How old are we here? Alright so there is two Genesis
channels on Irc, Oh no. Just deal with it, let everybody go where they want
to go and stop the petty fighting. Ok I'll shutup now, see you guys on
#paperlate and #genesisirc. Bye now :)
