Hi: Did Genesis ever play the piano intro to "Firth of Fifth"? I
have _Seconds Out_ and it is omitted. I also have Hackett like in
Tokyo (I know it's not Genesis) and it is omitted there (but it's got
a wicked cool middle improv part). I saw The Musical Box last week
and it seemed like the keyboard sound was a piano but he wasn't
playing a piano (I don't think). Did Genesis tour with a piano like
Yes used to?

Yes, but only very occasionally, and only on the Selling England tour.
There's a boot of it from the Montreal gig which, to my ears, is *VERY*
suspicious - sounds like it was tacked on later.

> Did Genesis tour with a piano like Yes used to?

No, and that's the reason. Tony used a real grand piano on all of the studio
albums up to and including And Then There Were Three, but the band didn't
have the resources to take one out on the road. From Nursery Cryme to the
early part of the Selling England tour, Tony used a Hohner Pianet. Compare
the quiet section about two thirds of the way through Hogweed on Nursery
Cryme and then on Genesis Live and you'll hear the difference immediately.
Incidentally, Tony also put the Pianet through a fuzz box e.g. the opening
of Hogweed, the break in the middle of Salmacis, which fooled a lot of
people into thinking that it was electric guitar, but that's another story.

Early on in the Selling England tour, Tony replaced the Pianet with the
first of several RMI Electra pianos. Apart from very good piano sounds (!),
this had several other presets which Tony used to good effect e.g. the
opening of Grand Parade, the opening of Los Endos etc.

For the ATTWT tour, and most of the 80s tours, Tony used the mighty Yamaha
CP-70 on which he could very easily have played the FoF intro...

but he hardly ever did. The few shows I have (on tape) where he did play it, he
nearly always f***d it up! Those who have the Brussels '74 show will know what
I mean.
The Montreal intro was not added later. That was a live broadcast.

But the intro's _dead easy_ to play, just ask Mark or Piers de Lavison!

The show was actually a mini-festival with Peter Hammill headlining and
broadcast live on CHON fm. What makes that tape sound unusual is that the
audience was occasionally and manually 'faded in' as without additional
microphones set up the audience would not be there at all (like on many
soundboard tapes). I have owned a copies of it (some stereo, some mono) since
shortly after the broadcast it the intro has always been there. Why would
Genesis (on a tight touring schedule) want to re-dub it later, when Tony can
play it live in the first place? Especially when it's 'so easy'.

Piece of cake, mate.

Even a mobile phone can play it...

TRN (who got some really odd "do I know that tune?" looks when his mobile
had FoF as its ring)

I still say that would have been a good laugh at G2 - "Best Genesis mobile
phone ring".... Would have had more chance of winning that than the quiz!
(Mind you I bet Volker had FoF, Cinema Show, Apocalypse in 9/8 and many
others as his mobile phone rings)

TRN

Sorry Piers, it was meant as a joke, I know that your average is fantastic
and you're in my top three Genesis Tribute Band Keyboard players.

Next time you play near me, I'll buy you a Babycham, OK?
