Of course, there has been some discussion about this previously and
there are some who believes the him is the son.
"That Ol' Wind" tells a very moving story of a love that came to two
people, but was ahead of its time. Just like the wind that can come
up at any time and sweep you off your feet, taking your breathe away,
true love can happen at the most inopportune times..and that is exactly
what happens to the people in this piece. Just like the wind, that
swirls over the earth twisting and turning, love can be that way
too...and sometimes that very same gust of wind can return, and while it
brings with it the same powerful force, it can also bring back the same
uncertainties. In this story, that ol' wind is the lover...and
this time, when the "wind finally finds its way home", in spite of
those uncertainties, he stays...
"Someday he'll tell her about the money he hid
And someday she'll tell him that the boy is his kid
But for right now they're both in love
The only thing they're thinkin' of
Is that they're finally where their hearts have always been..."*

To answer your question (I was puzzled too!) I went straight to the
source. I got a chance to talk to Garth back in May. One of my questions
for him was does he stay or does he go? Well, from the horse's mouth (so
to speak) HE STAYS!
Hope that helps you out!

********************************************************************************************************* "Our future is not unpredictable, our future is simply the result of choices we have made." ---Garth Brooks
The weeks between tickets on sale and the concert were filled with
excitement and haunting memories from talking with and hugging Garth a
month earlier. His eyes had looked so tired and sad a month ago and my
heart needed to see his eyes and know that things were okay with him.
Friday, July 25 came and I arrived at Cooper Stadium around noon. My
concert mate is a wonderful sign maker and she had an afternoon of sign
making planned. Once we got that task done, we went to the gate where
GB’s bus was at. We stood at the gate maybe five minutes when a Columbus
television station camera man approached us to chat about the concert,
Garth, what we were doing at the venue so early, etc. Over an hour later
and the crew took off. The camera man promised me a copy of the
broadcast, and I’m anxiously awaiting it! As the day grew on, we talked
with several of the band and crew members, but everyone wanted to see
Garth. GB was doing a press conference from 5-6pm and he was spotted
going from the conference to the bus, waving and saying hi to those at the
fence. Several crew members were talking about hanging tarps in front of
the fence so that GB’s bus wouldn’t be visible. The final verdict, from
GB was no, not while people were standing there (yes, the tarps were up
the next day). Finally the time came to go in to the venue. We had our
signs, our drinks, our cameras, my gift for GB. We were ready. “Excuse
me, ma’am but you can’t bring that camera in here”. WHAT? I explained to
the security guy that GB encourages flash photography and that I have
always been allowed to take my camera in to the other arenas I went to.
Well, my fight was going to be futile, I could see that. So, I took my
camera back to the car and since I was wearing my prescription sunglasses,
I took my regular glasses out of the camera bag and threw them into the
bag with my present for GB. Of course, I got in with no problem when I
had no camera bag. I proceeded to go to my 13th row on the field seat
with great sadness. These seats would have lent themselves to some great
pics. Well, hey, wait a Garthminute. The lady 2 seats down from me had a
nice camera with a nice long telephoto lens. Hmmm... looks a lot like the
one they wouldn’t let me bring in. I did a 360 and lots of people around
me had cameras similar to mine! I asked a couple of them how they managed
to get in, and they said they had no problem. They just had their camera
hanging and walked right in. I guess I looked too professional with my
bag and all. I tried to get out of Cooper to get my camera but I wouldn’t
be able to get back in once I went out. Defeated, I sat down. I
should’ve just went to a different gate. Let this be a lesson to all of
you! I have lots of good pics of GB, so I didn’t really “need” more -
it’s just the principle of the thing!
Right before GB took the stage, I switched glasses - put the sunglasses in
the case, put my regular ones on and threw the glass case in the present
bag. I was ready! GB took the stage promptly at 9 pm in the sultry night
air. I estimate it was 90 degrees but GB was full of energy. He wore
black jeans, black hat, and his shirt had a black left sleeve and black
left section, then a white stripe. The right sleeve and back were purple
- this is the shirt he wore in Ireland. GB connected with me and my
concertmate several times via our signs. Once again, he knew who we were
and that we were there to share the experience with him. When GB was at
the edge of the stage, I made my move to give the guard my present. The
guard put the present on the stage and GB picked it up. All was well. As
far as encores go, GB filled 2 requests - he sang a section of “Ireland”
acappella and “Alabama Clay” with the band. He also did “Night Moves” and
:American Pie”. Yes, this was a good night! I made it home around
3:30am. When I unlocked my door, I thought “My sunglasses!!!” You
guessed it, I had left my prescription sunglasses in GB’s present bag.
Sat July 26 was even hotter than the day before. It reached a high of 98
degrees. We arrived at the stadium at 6pm, because I wanted to try and
get my sunglasses back. I was prepared that they were goners, but I
wanted to give it the ole college try. My eyes are extremely sensitive to
light and without my glasses, I was in pain. Dave Gant walked behind the
stage and I approached him. He was kind, considerate, and quite concerned
(he wears glasses himself, so he could empathize!). He said that GB was
on the bus doing radio until 8:30 and that he wasn’t sure he could
interrupt. He thought hard and we decided that if he found the glasses,
and didn’t find me, he would give them to a crew member who would put them
in his equipment drawer. I told Dave I would be back for the Tuesday show
and could always get them then. After I filled my friend in on what was
happening, I headed to my seat (which was 10 rows behind the stage and of
course, I got my camera in this time!). On the way, I noticed Dave
standing where I left him, holding a black glass case! OH MY GARTH! Dave
my hero!! I asked him where they were and he said “on Garth’s bus in the
bag”. I felt good not only having my glasses back, but knowing that my
present really was on GB’s bus. Thanks Dave!
I guess it was still over 90 degrees when GB took the stage, but it was
much more humid than Friday. GB wore black jeans, black hat, and the
black & white MoBetta shirt (the one he recently wore on Leno) with the
white stripe and MoBetta in large letters down the white stripe. Before
“The Old Stuff” was over, the shirt was soaked, wrinkled, and sticking to
GB. It was a hot muggy night. The view from behind wasn’t near as bad as
I thought it would be! I’ve been to enough GB concerts that I am over the
initial thrill. I experience them differently now. I watch and enjoy him
differently. I watch his face and his body movements and the way he works
a crowd. I absorb what he says between songs. Sitting behind the stage
gave me a unique vantage point to watch him interact with the crowd. I
wouldn’t want to sit there all of the time, but once was actually nice!
Someone had a #1 balloon for Allie’s upcoming 1st birthday. He asked the
lady to come to the stage to give it to him. She got a hug in return and
those hugs are nice! When he would come to the back, I held up my sign.
I know he reads all of the signs he sees. He doesn’t always acknowledge
them, but he reads them all. I held the sign up about 3 different times
and I know he read it. But he never said a thing about it. The show was
over, the 1st encore was over. When he came back for the second encore,
he proceeded to tell us that he didn’t come to Columbus to shove the new
stuff (meaning “Fresh Horses”) down our throats (oh, this could be
directed at me, because of my sign!), but there was a song that meant a
lot to him from that album (yes, it is me... or is it?). He said if it
wasn’t for “The Dance”, this song would probably be his favorite (oh
my...it IS me!). He went on to say that he would have to bring the band
out for the next song (oh, I guess it’s not me) and that there is someone
holding up a sign in the back (YES, IT IS ME!) and he would like to fill
their request. He came to the back of the stage and I held up my sign,
dancing around with it. He smiled at me and I’m sure he recognized me
then. As the muggy night began to cool off and the wind blew, a fantastic
human being (who also happens to be a darn fine singer) sang our second
most favorite song to me, for me, with over 15,000 others experiencing.
GB was fulfilling my request of “The Change please”. Tears rolled down my
face as I sang with him, gazing into the night air. Not many stars out,
except for a gargantuan one on stage. GB sang the last half of the song
to the back. As he read the other side of my sign that read “Thanks!”, he
took off his hat, bowed to me, and gave me the okay sign. He saw my tears
and he felt my tears. The eyes that had haunted me for a month looked
better. My heart told me that GB was okay. After that dream was filled,
GB sang “Midnight Cinderella”, “Turn the Page” and then, of course,
“American Pie”.
Coming down off of that high was a hard crash. But I had Tuesday’s show
to look forward to! Again, we got to the venue around 6pm on Tuesday. I
wanted to try and meet up with Dave and tell him thanks again. I never
did accomplish that. But I did manage to get some great photos of GB
playing baseball before the concert. Cooper Stadium is a baseball stadium
and GB was giving it a workout! He looked good! Great form! Our seats
were about 25 rows back on the field. Not close, but not too far. For
me, a short person, it was bad as I couldn’t see. I went to an aisle seat
one row back and things were good once again since I could stand in the
aisle a bit! Tuesday night was cool and dry. I’d guess it was 65 by
night’s end. GB was quite spry and full of energy despite this being his
5th of 6 shows. His voice was strained though. Stephanie Davis joined
him, along with the regulars. I had wanted to take another sign, but
didn’t want to spoil the high from Saturday. Instead, I was there to
absorb and enjoy. The crowd sang Happy Birthday to Gaylon, a bus driver,
and of course, Gaylon got drenched with water! During the last encore, GB
spotted a sign in the 1st couple of rows that said “Sing us a wedding
song”. We all learned the story - the couple is getting married in
December and the tickets were a wedding gift (they have also posted their
story in Garthbox). GB sang a song for them that he normally doesn’t sing
(i’ve only heard him sing it once before). I’m not sure of the title, but
it’s along the lines of “You’re My Friend”.... about the ups and downs of
relationships and marriage. At the end of the song, he gave the couple
his guitar as a wedding gift! What a guy! He was giggling the whole
time! Such a kid at heart! After that he sang the intro of “Ireland”
acappella, and then fulfilled a request of “Wild Horses”. He said it had
been about 6 years since they played that and it might suck! Yeah, right,
GB suck! No way. He nailed that song too! Finished up the evening with
“American Pie”.
The three shows left me exhausted, thrilled, relieved, and content. Once
again, GB blows in and right back out leaving behind people that are
changed forever. Thanks for “The Change” my sweet man, thanks for “The
Dance”....

Teresa, Boy do I agree with you, I have a old college friend here
in OKC that works in radio so I got to hear the song a few days ago,
begged for a"bootleg" copy , promised not to share it , and have been
sitting on it (it's burning a hole in the seat of my pants!!) waiting for
someone on one of the boards to hear it too. I agree the first time a
heard it I got chills, then I started seeing awards, song of the year,
definitely vocal collaboration, duet , etc..., can you imagine the
VIDEO!!! Gosh, I love this song!!! Thank God for Garth and Trisha their
voices blend together soooo goood!!!
As his bus left out she cried
With him standing by her side
That ol' wind had finally found it's way home
So if the wind had finally found it's way home then I think that he stays,
because it goes on to say
Someday he'll tell her 'bout the money he hid
Someday she'll tell him that the boy is his kid
But for now they're both in love
And the only thing they're thinkin' of
Is that they're finally where their hearts have always been
So in light of these lyrics I think he stays, what's someone else's take on
this?
