That is what I always wanted to know. I guess it will be a good question for
the chat at www.garbage.com this October 14th!

Hi guys,
Sorry about the length of this post, but this is a copy of a message I
think I posted here a few months ago. So here's my interpretation of
Push It, enjoy...

OK Sean, I'll give it a shot, although I think in many ways the video is
pretty
open to interpretation. This could get LONG! I remember there was a
discussion
on trash-talk about the meaning behind the video and everyone had
different
views, but I'll give you my interpretation of it. First though, I think
the
band said they were doing a bit of homage to various movies they liked
in the
video. I don't recognize a lot of it but one example is those
scary-looking
white-haired kids from Villiage of the Damned.

Anyway, I think the song could be about just being in the studio
recording.
"Make the beats go harder" got me thinking along that line, and "this is
the
noise that keeps me awake, my head explodes and my body aches" just
reminds me
of how Shirley was so sick of working on the studio and losing sight of
the
everything else but the music. And I think the whole verse starting
with "I'm
sorry that I hurt you..." is about the Boys, remember how she went crazy
and
used to beat them up all the time? :-) "I want to see you happy/shine"
is
pretty self-explanatory, she wants the band to succeed and make a great
record
even though it's driving her insane. I'm sure that, thinking along
these
lines, the way I would interpret the rest of the song is pretty obvious,
so I
won't bore you with that any more.

On to the video: I think it's about Shirley dealing with her life. The
way I
see it, the first man she's with (Lightbulb-Head) is her old
band/life/self,
and the 3 nuns who surround him are the "Boys". Then it shows Shirl by

herself, then with the Garbage. This happens again during the scene
where
Shirley washes dishes and gets a phone call, which reminds me of how
Butch
first contacted her. Then those scary kids (who each have something
written on
their forehead I think representing what they're supposed to be, I think
one of
them is a dollar sign) come and get rid of Lightbulb-Head ("killing" her
old
life) and Shirley is once again shown becoming part of Garbage. I think
the
fuzzy guy represents Garbage/her life with them/her "self" with them,
don't ask
me what the kids or some of the other weird characters are. Then
finally the
"dark Shirley" (her subconciousness? Her self-love? Her dark side,
maybe?)
comes and "courts" Shirl, I think this is her trying to live for or
serve
herself instead of living for her old band or Garbage, finally just
deciding to
accept herself and take care of herself. And when Shirl, the fuzzy guy
and the
lightbulb-head all get into the car and drive away together, I think it
means
that she's reconciled her old life and her new life, the way she is and
the way
she used to be, with what's best for her or what she wants to be. Let
me know
if anyone has any better ideas,
Courtney

on the online concert, shirley said that she had the fans in mind....."i was
angry when i met you , i think i'm angry still" i think applies to the first
album cuz well the point of a lot of the songs was to say "Fuck you" to
somebody. and the rest of the song you can figure out on your own, i don't
feel like typing all that. thats just what i think.
