Those of you who are from the Washington, DC area or anywhere nearby will
want to know that Mick is going to open a new restaurant/nightclub,
"Fleetwood's", in Alexandria, VA this summer - I believe it will actually be
sometime this month. The restaurant will feature local jazz and blues
artists, and Mick himself will be a fairly frequent visitor.

Interestingly enough, the latest edition of Fleetwood Mac will appear at
Wolf Trap Farm Park in Vienna, VA as the opening act for Crosby, Stills and
Nash on August 2 and 3, just a couple of days before Stevie appears at
Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, MD on August 5th. Who else has
concert dates for the Mac/CSN tour?

I heard that FM is playing at Clear Lake, CA on July 6th but I'm not sure
how much of the band is involved. Does anyone know who's in the band on this
particular tour?

ALSO: This is a great newsgroup! I have been a fan of Fleetwood Mac ever
since I can remember. I have always loved Stevie Nicks (even though
I agree that her voice can at times be less than desirable). And
when I received the boxed set "Changes" and heard some of the really
old bluesy stuff, my admiration for the band was renewed.

Mick, John, Dave Mason (lead guitars) and Bekka Bramlett (lead vocals), for
sure. There have been rumors going back and forth all year as to whether
Christine will participate in this tour. There was also a rumor earlier that
Delaney Bramlett had joined his daughter in the band, but that was just a
story.

Glad to have you with us!:) I've been happily surprised over the past day
to see how large a group of Mac and Stevie fans seems to have been lying
in wait in the Usenet community; I was hoping for that, but I wasn't
absolutely sure when I set out to form a.m.f-m.

Here's an idea for somebody to follow-up on in a future thread; what do
you think of the changes in Stevie's voice over the last two decades?
Does she sound better or worse? Does this change from album to album
and from tour to tour?

Chris, if Stevie was performing "Rhiannon and "Landslide" as the encore,
it was the "Whole Lotta Trouble" 1991 tour; if the encore was "Has Anyone
Ever Written Anything For You", it was the 1989 tour.

Here's another good thread idea; what have been your most memorable concert
experiences seeing Fleetwood Mac, or any solo member?

I've only seen them in concert once, and that was during the _Tango
in the Night_ tour in 1987. This was just after Lindsey Buckingham
announced he was leaving the group and he did *not* join them on
this tour. Rick Vito and Billy Burnette were in the band instead.

They did most of the songs from the _Tango_ album, and Stevie
Nicks brought the crowd to its feet with _Stand Back_, and later
captivated it with _Has Anyone Even Written Anything For You_.

Another highlight was Christine McVie singing _Songbird_ alone at
the piano. Even though she must have performed this song hundreds
of times, she really seemed to enjoy it and the crowd was truly
mesmerized by her.

As much as I enjoyed parts of the show, it just didn't *seem* like
a Fleetwood Mac concert without Buckingham. Vito and Burnette
played and sung well, but it just wasn't the same. Most of the
signature Buckingham songs weren't performed, of course, and they
just didn't have Buckingham's frenetic energy level.

I would have *really* liked to have seen them on the 1980 _Tusk_
tour. This is the tour that produced the great _Fleetwood Mac Live_
album. Did anyone out there see this one?

These names are unfamiliar to me. Can you give some background information
for Mason & Bramlett? Other projects they have worked on? How and when did
they hook up with FM? Thanks.

Saw both the "Tusk" (80) and "Tango in the Night" (87) tours
in Portland, Oregon. Would definitely agree with you -- The
Tusk tour was much better (lasting almost three hours with
encores), while the "Tango in the Night" tour just didn't have
the same energy level. Your description of the later tour is
interesting, as it had almost the same highlights in PDX.

They performed almost the entire "Rumours" album on stage for
the 87 tour. While I like the Rumours album, it took up about
half the concert. I would have liked to see more exposure of
some of their later stuff, especially those with leads by Stevie.
She only did the lead on about three or four songs in that
concert. I would have at least liked to hear "Sara" or "Gypsy"
(or perhaps "Edge of Seventeen" or some of her other solo work),
but it didn't really happen. Like a lot of artists that have
been around for so many years and produced so much great stuff,
what do you skim off to perform in a two or three hour window.
Saw Elton John in '85. Similar problem (tons and tons of material),
but I thought he did a better job selecting a more representative
portion.

On the positive side, I'll have to admit that the new guys did
a pretty decent Lindsey Buckingham imitation on "Go your own
way" and Mick Fleetwood did some great drum and bongo work on
a protracted (10 minute) version of something or other ("The
Chain"). It was also interesting to see how much hair both
Mick and John had lost since 1980.

Oh boy! I can't pass up on this one! I saw Fleetwood Mac in the early
80's at Folsom Field in Boulder. They were the closing act in an all day
concert. The only other act I can remember off hand was Bob Seger.

The day had been hot and dry. While the stage was being set up for the
Mac, clouds started moving in. Within a couple of minutes after they took
the stage, it began steadily raining. No one in the crowd paid any
attention to the rain. We were 40,000+ people totally enthralled.

The highlight of the experience was when Stevie intoned "Thunder only
happens when it rains". At that very instant, a bolt of lightning and
thunder occurred. Stevie even ducked.

Great stuff...

I used to go to at least 100 concerts a year back in
the early 80's late 70's and I have seen fleetwood mac so
many times in concert that I don't know the count. I have
seen them every possible show they did passed 1977 in the
SF Bay area and the only show that I almost missed, but they
cancelled was Stevie Nicks at the Concord Pavillion back
but they cancelled the show, I think it was the day of
the SF '89 earthquake. I even saw all five
shows at the Cow Palace for the Tusk tour and was lucky
enough to sit in the first 3 rows for all shows.

Those were the days, I have taken some great concert pictures
of them - you know the days when you could bring a camera into a show.
I will have to did them up one of these days -
I wonder if I still have the negatives - hmmmm.

At the risk of causing some other readers of the group to pass out from shock
:), I have to admit that I'm not terribly familiar with Dave Mason's work.
I do know, though, that he's a longtime English rock veteran and that he
was with Steve Winwood in Traffic, and has released a lot of solo albums.
How about it, people - who can post a Dave Mason biography/discography?

I do know something about Bekka Bramlett, though. She is the daughter of
Delaney Bramlett (the male half of Delaney & Bonnie - and, in a highly
ironic sidenote, Rick Vito once was part of D&B's backup band!) She
was previously the lead vocalist for the latest version of Mick's Zoo,
and, from the videos that I've seen of her performing with the Zoo, has
a rather pop-metalish style of performance. At least one of my snail-
mail penpals has threatened to walk out and demand her money back if
Bekka dares to perform Stevie's songs in concert with the Mac. In fact,
I want to pose that question to those of you who are familiar with Bekka's
work with the Zoo; *do* you think she should perform any of Stevie's songs
on the Mac tour this summer? For that matter, do you think she was
even a good choice to join Fleetwood Mac?

My favourite was in 1971 in Lennoxville (yes, Lennoxville...) Quebec, a
small town in the Eastern Townships that is the home of Bishop's
University. I think there were about 1,500 students enrolled at the
time. It was their only Canadian stop on their North American tour.

It seems that the Student Union at Bishop's was really into music. They
took about 90% of their budget and put it into subsidizing a serious
musical event. (There are only 600 seats in the theatre, so they sure
weren't going to pay for it from ticket sales...)

I remember FM called from the airport in Montreal (about 90 miles from
L'ville) to check that the sound system met their specs. The producer
tried to convince them that a 600 seat theatre really didn't need that
much power. But FM said they'd just get back on the plane if they
couldn't get the equipment, so they got it. It was LOUD in that hall!

They had just released the Bare Trees album, I believe, still very much
in a rock-and-roll phase, and still quite bluesy. They seemed to have a
good time on stage (Picture Jeremy Spencer doing an Elvis impersonation!)

Great concert, no bad seats, and a lot of fun.

Day on the green Oakland Stadium Summer 1975. It was a heluva show,
Not only the Mac, but Dave Mason and Peter Frampton Too!

Lindsay wailed on for what seemed like forever on "I'm so Afraid" working
the phase shifter and pedal like I've not seen since.

Still makes my hair stand up when I here that song.

In November 1990, I was fortunate enough to get front row seats to FM's
Behind the Mask concert in Cincinnati. During an encore, Stevie leaned over
the edge of the stage and shook my hand (well, okay, my hand and the hands of
about 10 other people who were able to reach across the security gap between
the front row and the stage, but I SWEAR she was looking at me). She had a
hand as soft as a baby's.

OK ... here goes ... a short Dave Mason biography/discography:

Born ... May 10, 1947 in Worcester, England. He worked in the mid-sixties
in a band with drummer Jim Capaldi. In 1967 they joined Steve Winwood and
Chris Wood and formed the band TRAFFIC. In 1968 he left Traffic due to
disagreements with Steve Winwood about musical direction for the band. He
co-produced (with Jim Miller) the debut album by the British band FAMILY.
After a short-lived band with Capaldi and Wood, he moved to Los Angeles
where he was introduced to Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett. In 1969 he joined
their Friends tour (with Eric Clapton). In 1970 he recorded his first
solo album (Alone Together). In late 1970, he joined up with Mama Cass
Elliot (of THE MAMAS & THE PAPAS), and they subsequently recorded a
less-than-well recieved album together. When that partnership dissolved,
he returned to England for a short time where he toured with TRAFFIC
(which resulted in a live recording), and recorded with GEORGE HARRISON on
his debut solo album All Things Must Pass. From that point on, he has had
an erratic solo career.
