That really surprises me, but I suppose you know for sure. On his web
page (flamencovision) it says he is "malagueño", from Málaga. If it's
true that he moved to Spain in his "late teens" as your wiki-article
says, it's quite strange that he doesn't speak better english with less
spanish accent....

Juan Martin (John Martin) is the biggest con in flamenco. A mediocre
guitarist sporting a fake English accent and ripping off others material but
with a huge marketing campaign! I nearly walked out of his concert that I
attended out of curiosity. He has the worst tremolo you will ever hear, a
shonky compas and corny compositions. He has made a fortune out of flamenco
while many great guitarists in Spain a struggling to make a living and I
think that's wrong!
I doubt that Paco de Lucia would have trained him as Paco doesn't teach.
Isn't it always the way that the fool is king in the world?

i know it is a strange one, but if you look at his videos from 15 years
ago he is almost affecting a spanish accent.
Juan is his stage name - the article has been reverted until i can get
a confirmation from Paco de lucia - the article also suggests he was
trained by Lucia - i am just asking for some other people to look
around and help me out with this.

Juan Martin was called John Martin,he doesnt say on flamencovision.com
where he was born either. Its just biographical stuff that makes him
even more amazing as a guitarist, wouldnt you agree?

But can we prove this in anyway - i hear this a lot in Brighton - is
there any proof so i can put this in wiki for instance?

The proof is in his playing. He plays like a classical guitarist trying to
play flamenco without any cojones!
He is the "Chopin of the guitar", compared as a composer to Tarrega, voted
"one of the top 3 guitarists in the world". What a joke!
You won't see many flamencos at his concerts.

Wow... it sounds like Mr. Martín is fooling people. Well I totally
agree on Antonys comments on his music: not exactly Paco de Lucía
level!! His teaching material may be o.k. but as far as playing goes,
I'd prefer Paco Peña any day (another semi-english player if I'm not
mistaken).

Anyway, the music you hear when you enter his site just proves the
point.. ;-)

At least Paco Peña was born in Spain. In Cordoba as a matter of fact.

Yeah Paco Peña is quite good. I think he's working out of the UK or
Holland these days... I'm not sure. I recently bought a Paco Peña LP
on ebay (not available on cd and I only have it on tape). Has some
really cool playing on it :-)

I know Paco Pena very well. He was born in Cordoba and still has a house
there as well as in London. He has done a lot to keep the traditional style
of flamenco alive and he plays it very well. He doesn't pretent to be
anything else. He once told me honestly " I don't have the talent to play
the modern flamenco".

To; Uffe

Juan Martin was born in England. His father was Spanish and his mother
was English.

Believe he was listed as a non-Spanish flamenco in the first edition of
"Lives and Legends of Flamenco".

Although not in the class of Sabicas or Paco de Lucia, seems to be a
good solo guitarist and accompaniest. Have not heard him in person, but
"Classical Guitar" gives him good reviews, when he performs in London.

Have some of his methods, including a DVD.

HELP NEEDED ON WIKI - ARTICLE ABOUT TO BE REVERTED BACK.
I have cited D E Pohren on the wikipedia article about Juan Martin,
where he states that Juan is a "non spanish" flamenco guitarist.

The mediators on wikipedia will not take D E POHRENS word for it
though, and the article will state that John/Juan is a spanish born
native of Andalucia from tomorrow - can anybody help on this wiki?-
perhaps go to the talk page at the link below and try and point out
just how knowledgable Donn Pohren is?

Don is The Man when it comes to flamenco! If anybody knows it's Don Pohren.
What I heard is that John Martin was born in Brighton England of an English
mother and father from the English colony of Gibraltar. He moved to Malaga
as a teenager for a while.
Why not as Don himself ? Email him on donp...@hotmail.com

You are correct. I remember John Martin. He lived on Buckingham Road, Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, not far from Brighton. His mother was a lot younger than her husband and us kids joked she'd become pregnant by a Spanish waiter while on holiday. Needless to say we were ruthless in our name calling. I recall in his teens he went to find his biological father in Spain. I knew he was studying the guitar and later in life went to live and study in Spain. John is not a bad person and any of us in his situation would try desperately to hide an embarrassing past. Pleased he's worked through it and become very successful.
