When I was in college, a local DJ played the record backwards, and
said that the lyrics were: "TIME IS REVERSABLE"

Can anybody confirm this?

Actually, it is:

THE MUSIC IS REVERSABLE,
BUT TIME IS NOT.

TURN BACK, TURN BACK, TURN BACK!

I think it was just a bit of silliness to catch people who turned
it backwards. The album is chock full of "secret messages" in
retaliation for those who accused Jeff of putting Satanic messages
into "Eldorado". Hence the title, "Face the Music" meaning "face
the music, there's nothing really going on here!" I think it was
just to give those people fits.

I've seen some of the literature that people have written about the
supposed satanic stuff in "Eldorado". These people are scary!

Minor picky point, Roberto, but it's *four* "TURN BACK"'s and not
*three*...

No, it's the other way around:

"Music is reversable, but time is not. Turn back, turn back, turn
back."

This is by some believed to be Jeff's reply to accusations about
satanic backmasked messages on Eldorado.

This brings up an interesting question...I too recall seeing some episode
of the PTL (yes, with the infamous Jim Bakker), where they had someone on
there blasting Eldorado...but I can't for the life of me recall what the
"hell" it was that they tried to say was being said if you played the
song(s) backward.

I have listened to every second of that album forward, backward, twice
and half speed, and I have yet to hear anything.

Heck, it's hard enough understanding the lyrics FORWARD, especially on
songs like Laredo Tornado. I recall when I finally found an original
copy of the album in an old electronic's stores discount record bin, and
saw the actual lyrics to that album, they didn't come close to what I'd
thought he was saying on alot of the songs.

If anyone knows the entire story (or any part of it) about all these
satanic accusations, please post.

The lyrics go like this,...

"The music is reversible, but time isn't,..turn back,..turn back,..turn back,.."

Hmm.. where were these backmasked words supposedly at? I'll admit, I
haven't listened to the whole albun in awhile (turntable's broken), but I
don't think I've ever heard any backmasked lyrics in it. I'd think that if
they wanted to stick backmasked stuff on any album for repulsive stuff,
they wouldda done it on On The Third Day... It seems Jeff had a little
attitude with that album :)

Actually, there are backwards lyrics to the beginning of Fire On High
(before the music starts). You can plainly hear them if you play it fwds.
The lyrics are right ("The music is reversible... etc, etc, etc, turn
back")

I sort of remember actually catching this PTL show years ago while I was
channel surfing. I think they were raising a stink about how the meaning
was something like you should turn back (from your evil ways) before it's
too late (because time is not reversible). In all, it was quite amusing.

Actually, I've always kinda wondered why Jeff put that there. This was
long before anyone had played Stairway backwards to find the now infamous
"satan" message. And it's not even really backwards "masked". It's just
speech recorded backwards before the music starts which can be plainly
heard.

It's a tribute to The Beatles. Listen to the strings and the white
noise...it is a takeoff on Revolution #9.

Jeff most likely got the backwards idea from the Beatles "Rain."

Okay, now that I've figured out how to use this newsreader (thanks to my
friend, "Railhead"), I'll re-post what I tried to send before but it didn't
get here. (If it did I don't see it!)

In 1983 I heard an interview with Jeff where he said that after "Face the
Music" came out, he and the other ELO members caught alot of flack for their
"Satanic" messages. He said people would come up to them and ask them about
their messages about "you know" on the albums. Jeff said they were in England
when this was going on and they were very upset at first, but later they
decided the whole thing was "silly".

Jeff said something like this: "I started thinking about it, and picturing
this chap sitting and listening to every record ever made backwards... it
would be thousands..."; he said it was "silly". Sorry I can't find the exact
quote right now. Anyway, he said, "We don't put nasty messages on albums,
because we're not nasty."

The interviewer then paraphrased Jeff and said that "Secret Messages" was
aimed at a few "backward-listening Americans".

Well, that's my contribution, I guess. I hope this shows up this time!!

It's supposedly around the "on a voyage of no return to see..." part.

Yes, and it's actually Bev Bevan (drummer) doing the backwards vocals...
