I have a CD I bought back in the early 90's of a group (well, really 2 guys)
named Crumbacher-Duke. I listened to this album last night for the firat
time in probably 5-6 years and sat there with my jaw dropped at how much
they sounded like ELO (except for vocals- these guys aren't form the UK).
The album is Christian music (well, pseudo-Christian: you wouldn't really
know by the lyrics. Think Stryper but with talent and better music:-).

Anyway, there are 4 or 5 songs on this album that if Jeff sat in and sang
the lyrics, you'd think he wrote and produced them. Backing vocals, chord
progressions, guitar riffs and solos, voice echos... sound just like Jeff.
these guys HAD to be influenced by ELO's sound. One song in particular
almost sounds exactly like Tightrope in places. The name of the album is
Worlds Away. If I had somewhere to host these songs I'm talking about, I'd
do it b/c I want my fellow ELO lovers to hear them. I'm going to dust this
baby off and listen to it for a while. It gives me that same feeling as when
I listen to an ELO album after shelving them for some time. This album is
long out of print, so I may convert these to MP3s and make them available on
WinMX. I'll advise on that when I get the chance to do it. (May go grab it
now)

Is anyone interested in hearing ELO soundalikes? I promise I'm not blowing
smoke...

Yeah, I agree!
Worlds Away sounds like Secret Messages era ELO
Summer Children, like Tightrope (especially the solo)
Desert Lightning & Rock In A Hard Place, like Discovery era ELO
No Kind Of Magic, like Xanadu era ELO
Tears Of Joy, like Balance Of Power era ELO

The whole album is a keeper for ELO fans!

I am on WinMX and currently have the whole album available.

Just type in Chrumbacher-Duke and you should pull them all up.

ELO-sounding cuts:
Worlds Away - Made me drive straight to the store and buy the album. Even
opens with the lyrics "The voices call to me across the open blue".
Summer Children (Tightrope)
The Last Time (Discovery- guitar solos sound like Jeff)
Desert Lightning (On The Run/Confusion)
No Kind Of Magic (something from Xanadu)
Over & Over, On & On (Balance of Power)
Tears of Joy (Discovery)

The rest sound nothing like ELO, IMO.

Try them out and let me know if you agree...

Listened to some of Crumbacher-Duke (thanks Paul Weeks!!!) and I have to
agree... ELO fans will really enjoy some of this stuff!

Worlds Away sounds so much like a clone of Secret Messages and Secret Lives
that you just gotta smile when you hear it.

The C-D tunes mentioned in an earlier post are CLEARLY derivative - if not
intentional ELO tributes - and loads of fun!

If you have AudioGalaxy, you'll find 5 pages of C-D. Search under
"Crumbacher".

Anyone know the history of this group?

Best to all,
Mk

Crumbacher started as a Euro-synth sounding Contempory Christian Band during
the "third wave" in the mid 80's. Leader Steven Crumbacher along with three
others, they recorded four albums... Incadescent, Escaping The Fallen
Planet, Thunder Beach and Tame The Volcano. Christopher Duke (soon to be
Crumbacher's brother in law) joined the band for their final album before
working as a duo with Stephen Crumbacher. Worlds Away was the only project
from the two. Steven Crumbacher recorded one solo album afterwards and
eventually left the "industry". His work is available on mp3.com.
All Music.com rates Worlds Away 4.5 out of 5.
