Then there's breakbeat which is basically the same thing as drum and base.

It's something I'm quite interested in - some bands are heading in this
kinda direction, but anyone who could point me at any more would be
thanked profusely :)
It's not so much thrash metal bands, more hardcore / post-hardcore /
noise who are experimenting here (well, in terms of what I'm listening
to anyway) - in particular check out The Locust, their "Well I'll Be A
Monkey's Uncle" EP has remixes by Kid606 amongst others, and their other
stuff sometimes has breaks elements involved. The Dillinger Escape Plan
are influenced by pretty much anything under the sun, so some of their
breakdowns come across as pretty DnB-y.
Another area where I suspect there's some crossover, but I haven't poked
around in much, is within death/black metal. Certainly some of what I've
heard has the dark techy feel of techstep / darkstep like Technical Itch
and whatnot, but it's not something I've had the time to look into properly.
Really though, it's not a massively easy gulf to bridge. In terms of
sound and impact, extreme DnB (i.e. breakcore, like Venetian Snares,
Kid606 etc) isn't a million miles away from experimental noise / post
hardcore (Agarophobic Nosebleed, Dillinger Escape Plan), but since
rock/metal is traditionally based on straight 4/4 beats (think house and
trance) and DnB hits on the breaks and offbeats, there's quite a
structural difference. Bands have to be fairly experimental to chuck the
4/4 out the window, but the results are usually pretty interesting. To
me, at least :)
I'd like recommendations too if anyone reading this has any :) I'm very
into Venetian Snares and Kid606 at the moment, and I suspect breakcore
is something I want to be looking into more - suggestions? Don't throw
me in too much at the deep end here, the artists I've mentioned are a
useful guide to where I'm "at" in terms of resilience to noise ATM ;)
X-Posted to rec.music.experimental which seemed appropriate since we're
deviating from straight DnB here :)
Cheers
