I think the song you're talking about is Fairytale of New York, by The
Pogues -- perhaps Knopfler did a cover version??

Gotta be a joke, Knopfler needing to cover
crap by the pogues......

The man is a legend in his own right, and long after the pogues
are dead and gone, people will still remember Mark Knopfler !!!!

A bit harsh
It wouldn't be outside the realms of possibility considering the Celtic
influences on Knopfler's last solo album...
Maybe somebody will prove you wrong and find a rare cover, perhaps a joke or
TV appearance!?
