Well as much of a BIG IAN fan that I'm -- I'll give the edge to SIR
FREDDIE MERCURY. FREDDIE had the DIVA voice mixed into the best
custumes(SP) money could buy. I think it was that performance at
Wembley were he came out with a CROWN on his head -- everyone went
nuts.

Vocally, Freddie was in a league by himself. He wrote an OPERA called
Barcelona for some DIVA in SPAIN; Conversely, BIG IAN sand the lead in
JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR. I'd have to give Freddie the edge.

HIT SONGS:
QUEEN & SIR FREDDIE WIN this hand down. WE're THE CHAMPIONS vs. SMOKE
on the WATER. SOMEBODY TO LOVE vs LAZY. CRAZY LITTLE THING CALLED
LOVE, etc, etc.....

Clothing changes:

BIG IAN is lucky if he changes anything thoroughout a tour never mind a
performance; albeit, RAH displayed Ian in a Indian garment that looked
really cool.

Did both Ian and Freddie go to school in India? Although Freddie was
from India descent. Is BIG IAN part Indian?

Well, he wrote one song... or was there a whole album... I can't
remember now.

You've been to the wrong shows, Gord ;-) I've seen Ian change 4 or 5
times during a show. It just depends how hot it is.

> Did both Ian and Freddie go to school in India?

Ian went to school in Hounslow. Freddie went to a private school in
India until he moved to the UK when he was about 11.

Judging by the number of asian clothes shops near the Albert Hall, I
think this probably had more to do with Ian's choice than anything else.

Anyway, in my opinion, Freddie was the best singer out there, bar none.
I'm not a big fan of Queen, but I like some of their stuff. Freddie had
the voice and the stage pressence that no one else has matched. I think
this was best illustrated by the tribute concert, where they had to get
two singers to do the songs Freddy sang alone, as no one else had the
range and power.

Cheers

Doug

Doug, thx for some insighful information in regards to Ian Gillan. I've
learned something new about Ian. You're probably right -- I've been to
the wrong shows. When he played in Vancouver back in 1985 -- I don't
think he changed clothing for the whole show -- but there was lots of
BEER off the side of the stage. He's a great singer -- not doubt about
it.

The Queen Tribute concerts was great, too. And, of course, alot of money
was raised for a good cause.

Personally, I saw Queen in Vancouver back in the late 70's with Thin
Lizzy. WHat a night. Of course, Freddie displayed his vocal range,
which was simply awwesome. King or Queen of the custume change.

Ian is born in UK and he also went to school there. Freddie was born
in Zanzibar, moved to India at age 1 and moved to UK at age 17. So he
went to school in both India and UK.

Vocally, Mercury takes the cake, his ability to perform operatic
material in a rock context and still have balls and power was pretty
much unequaled. Even to his dying days, he could still muster up
incredible performances throughout his vocal range, as can be heard on
Made in Heaven and the 91 Queen Cd, the title of which escapes me. And
I've never heard a bad Mercury performance....... unlike Ian's many- "I
stayed up all night drinking and talking and smoking" live performances
which led to Ritchie leaving and can be heard on Paris 85 and CHOHW
live CD.

As much as liked Queen to compare them with Purple or indeed Freddie with
big Ian is not really comparing like with like in my opinion.Queen did
indeed have many hit songs but they were always more pop and hit single
orientated than Purple who were very much a Rock band and a more album track
and live performance band.In my opinion IG in his heyday had the most unique
and powerful voice in the Rock world unfortunately this only lasted for a
few short years and by the time the late 70s arrived IGs voice was somewhat
shot.To this day IG remains a fine performer and still carries a song well
but his voice is nowhere near his early days.

Freddie was a great showman, and he wrote some incredible tunes. But Ian was,
(in his prime) 10 times the singer Mercury ever was. Ian's voice was PURE and
powerful, CLEAN and strong -- and his range was as good or better. Try this --
listen to Ian's voice in JCS -- the vibrato, the tone, the timbre. Now, listen
to Freddie's forced, fake (sometimes campy and comedic) vibrato. No comparison.
IMHO.

Nice comments. It's unfortunate that Big Ian doesn't do more Rock

justice to the lead role of most musicals in production today. Of
course, it would be a treat to watch as well.

realize just how gifted and talented people like Freddie and Big Ian

_Innuendo_

The title and some of the songs on it, like "Innuendo" and
"The Show Must Go On" are very prophetic to what was about
to happen.

Queen had plenty of Hard rock songs like Tie your Momma Down, Keep Your
Self Alive, etc.... and I agree with you, this is a rather unfair
comparison, Apple/oranges Ian has always done the best he could with
limited resources, he wasn't blessed like Freddie and David Coverdale,
and is a completely different singer.

No lie. It sounds like Alan hasn't listened to many Queen albums, (Black
and White, Sheer Heart Attack etc.) no more single oriented cuts than DP.
You could say Freddy (when he wanted) had more of a knack for sing-songy
melodies than Gillian.

Imagine if you will, Deep Purple MkII playing that rock section in
"Bohemian Rhapsody", awesome rock riff, great vocals....that would've
kicked ass.

Hmmm....What Purple tune would Queen have rocked on?

Much as I like Freddie Mercury's voice, I don't think he could do Child In

Wasn't there a 70s song that went "If there's a rock and roll heaven, there's
gonna be a hell of a band" or something like that?

Anyway, my lineup is:

Hendrix - guitar & vocal
Bolin - guitar & vocal
SR Vaughan - guitar & vocal
Mercury - vocal and occasional keyboard where necessary
Lynott - bass & vocal
Bonham - drums
Moon - percussion

Setlist could include:

The Boys are Back in Town (Lynott vocal)
Tie Your Mother Down (Mercury vocal)
I Can't Explain (Mercury vocal)
Wild Dogs (Bolin vocal)
Post Toastee (Bolin vocal)
Hey Joe (Hendrix vocal)
Rock and Roll (Mercury vocal)
Voodoo Child (Hendrix/SRV vocal)
Whole Lotta Love (Mercury vocal, with Bolin's echoplex and Hendrix's feedback
re-creating the middle section)

Sorry to burst your bubble but Queens current single "Let Me In Your Heart
Again" originally recorded during "The Works" 1984 sessions but scrapped
until recently is burning up the charts in Europe and doing fairly well here
in the USA. Meanwhile, Deep Purple hasn't had a hit since "The Unwritten
Law" & "Bad Attitude" from "House Of Blue Light" the failed follow up to the
warmly received "Perfect Strangers" from the mid eighties. Ritchie
Blackmore no doubt did the right thing and left a dying band of whom tries
to make noise with Steve Morse on lead guitar. There current album "Now
What" has failed to have any charting singles and the tour has been met with
less enthusiasm and crowds. Queen's current singer Adam Lambert along with
founding Queen members Brian May & Roger Taylor were recently voted as best
band of 2014, had a sold out tour of the USA and is poised to conquer Europe
with a nearly sold out tour covering all places in Europe. Not only that
but there is conversation between Lambert, May & Taylor about recording new
material which will no doubt lead to another world tour in 2015. Can you say
Deep Purple is on the same level as Queen then and now? Not by a long shot,
not at all.
