He also played in two bands in the early 70's, presumably between his stint
with Jeff Beck, probably between 1970-72 (???), and joining up with Rainbow.
The two bands were 'Bedlam' with Francisco Aiello, Dave and Dennis Ball, which
put out an eponymously entitled album in 1973, and 'Cozy Powell's Hammer' which
I know very little about.
Also, there was a time or two when Cozy "retired" from rock music entirely to
become a auto and/or motorcycle racer. But he never stayed away from the music
scene for long, of course.
He also did a brief recording session with Robert Plant for "Pictures at
Eleven" --- I think two tracks with him appear on the album....pretty awesome
performance IMHO.
That's all from me...

Before Beck, Powell drummed through the late sixties in a group called The
Sorcerers, and later Big Bertha (early 70 to mid 71). I don't think any of
these released any albums though (maybe some or oter single).
> 197? - 197? Jeff Beck Group
Powel drummed with Beck from spring 1971 to mid 1972 (I think they released
two or three albums; Rough And Ready is one of them). After Beck, Powell
(co)founded Bedlam (with ???, don't remember). They released one album and
split during the spring of 1974. Then Powell formed Cozy Powell's Hammer,
in mid 1974 (with Don Airey, Bernie Marsden and others) which went on till
sometime during 1975.
After that, I think he joined Rainbow.

Here's the information I have - from the Dio biography:
Cozy Powell
-----------
Ritchie Blackmore had seen Cozy Powell on stage in 1972, and right after
Gary Driscoll was fired, Cozy Powell was invited to join the Rainbow.
Cozy Powell had started to play drums at school. However, he got thrown
out of the school for causing trouble. After that, he has played in
various bands:
- Sorcerers, 1965-February 1968
- Ken Aston (vocals) / Cozy Powell (drums) / Dennis Ball (bass) /
Pete Ball (keyboards) / Roy Black (guitars)
- Played mainly in clubs in Germany, usually at K52 and Storeyville
in Frankfurt
- Casey Jones & The Engineers, February 1968-April 1968
- Sorcerers, Youngblood, Ace Kefford Stand, April 1968-Mid 1969
- Ace Kefford (vocals) / Cozy Powell (drums) / Dennis Ball (bass) /
Dave Ball (guitars)
- After a two-month trip to Casey Jones & The Engineers, Powell rejoined
Sorcerers, who changed their name soon to Youngblood and then again to
Ace Kefford Stand
- Powell started to play also as a session drummer for several musicians,
including Mickie Most
- Unnamed band, September 1969
- Cozy Powell (drums) / Dave Clempson / Dave Pegg
- Played only one concert at Leeds University.
- Big Bertha, October 1969-summer 1971
- Mac Poole (drums) / Cozy Powell (drums) / Dennis Ball (bass) / Dave
Ball (guitar) / Pete French (vocals) / Dave McTavish (vocals)
- Released singles:
- The World's An Apple / Gravy Booby Jamm (Atlantic 584 298, October 1969)
- Munich City (UA)
- Powell played only a couple of concerts before leaving the band
- Jeff Beck Group, April 1970-July 1972
- Clive Chaman (bass) / Jeff Beck (guitar) / Max Middleton (keyboards) /
Bobby Tench (vocals) / Cozy Powell (drums)
- Although Powell joined the band already in April 1970, he continued
in Big Bertha and didn't get a permanent place until in April 1971.
- Released albums:
- Rough And Ready (Epic 64619, October 1971, reached #46 in the USA)
- The Jeff Beck Group (Epic 64899, July 1972, reached #19 in the USA)
- Spirit, September 1972-October 1972
- Cozy Powell (drums) / John Locke / Staehely brothers
- Beast, Bedlam, November 1972-April 1974
- Frank Aiello (vocals) / Cozy Powell (drums) / Dennis Ball (bass) /
Dave Ball (guitars)
- The band changed it's name from Beast to Bedlam in May 1973
- Powell was approached by Johnny Winter in July/August 1972, but
he refused to join his band
- Released single (solo):
- Dance With The Devil (reached #3 in November 1973)
- Released album:
- Bedlam (Chrysalis CHR 1048, August 1973)
- Cozy Powell's Hammer, May 1974-April 1975
- Don Airey (keyboards) / Clive Chaman (bass) / Bernie Marsden (guitars) /
Frank Aiello (vocals) / Cozy Powell (drums)
- In late 1974, Cozy Powell decided to quit rock scene for motor racing.
He raced for a couple of months for Hitachi in England and had his
solo project going on at the same time.
- Released singles:
- Man In Black (reached #18 in May 1974)
- Na Na Na (reached #10 in August 1974)
- Strange Brew, July 1975-August 1975
- Greg Ridley (bass) / Dave Clempson (guitars) / Cozy Powell (drums)
- Clempson contacted Powell about forming the Strange Brew. Although
Powell had quit the rock scene, he decided to return to it via Strange
Brew. However, the band quit before it even found a vocalist.
- Rainbow from September 1975 on
...
Cozy Powell
-----------
After Dio left Rainbow, Cozy Powell continued in it with Ritchie Blackmore.
He left Rainbow after they played at the first Monsters Of Rock concert in
Castle Donington, UK in August 1980. After that, he has played as a guest
drummer on Cinderella's album in 1988, as well as in Black Sabbath. He
became a recording member of Black Sabbath in October 1988 and full member
in February 1989. At the same time he was asked to help Gary Moore in
studios, as well as on tour. Powell agreed to help Moore, but quit with
him rather soon, in April 1989.
...
Cozy Powell
-----------
Cozy Powell was playing drums for Black Sabbath when Dio rejoined the
band. However, before the Dehumanizer album recording started, Powell
was riding his horse when it got a heart attack and collapsed over
Powell. Powell's pelvis broke rather badly and Black Sabbath had to
give up him, as they were already late on schedules and record company
wanted the new album to be out as quickly as possible. However, soon
after Black Sabbath had fired Cozy Powell, he put his own band together
and recorded a solo album. After the Black Sabbath reunion was finished,
and the Black Sabbath with Ozzy Osbourne reunion plans were discarded,
Powell rejoined Black Sabbath.

If I remember right (and I'm not sure I do), he was part of ELP (Emerson,
Lake, and Powell) sometime around 1986-87. I don't recall if they ever
released an album though.

Cozy Powell also played on the _Rainbow_ albums: "Rising", "Long Live Rock

I think the guitarist was Eric Ball. I have the album and can check
about members and other details if anyone is interested. In fact
if anyone is interested in swapping for the album...

1988-1991 for the Headless Cross & Tyr albums. Depending on whom you talk to,
he was there for the beginning of the Dehumanizer stuff, but got "dumped" when
he had a personal injury, and the record company didn't want to wait for him.
This comes from a Dio interview when they all got back together, and before
Dehumanzier was released. Cozy was replaced with Vinnie.
>: 1994 - ? Black Sabbath (rumour I heard somewhere)
Not rumour. He's back. Black Sabbath 1995 is the same as it was in 1991 on
the Tyr lineup.

Yes, they did. Don't remember what it was called, but there was a song
called something like _Touch and Go_ (the lyrics went "Running with the
Devil, it's touch and go"), and incorporated some melodic themes from
Vaughn-Williams Elizabethan Suite, I believe.
Cosy also appeared on _Guitar Speak II_ with Tony Iommi.

You're right, Szelim. Cozy Powell joined ELP (Emerson, Lake, and Powell) for
the short time. They also released one album which arranged Holst's Planet.
