Eddie Jobson in Rainbow?

Just finished watching the "Butterfly Ball" video, the soundtrack of which
will hopefully be released some day (Roger?) as it features some excellent
performances. Standouts are some tasty organ work from Jon, a very funny
performance from Tony Ashton who manages to sing with a cigarette in his
mouth (later transferred up to one of his nostrils), & some brilliant violin
soloing from Eddie Jobson.

This brought to mind a sentence in the Frank Zappa biography "Electric Don
Quixote" which says -

"At the end of Roxy Music's American tour, he [Eddie] remained in Los
Angeles and played with an early incarnation of Ritchie Blackmore's
Rainbow." Judging by the book, this would be mid-late 1974. If so, that
would mean that Mickey Lee Soule lasted next to no time in the band, leaving
/being elbowed before the first album was released. Anyone got any more
info on this?

The book goes on to say that "With an open invitation to join the band
[Zappa's Mothers] whenever he could, Jobson returned to England where he was
offered gigs with Ian Gillan and Procol Harum ...". I guess that would have
been before Ian met up with Colin Towns.

Jobson in Rainbow or IGB is a mouth-watering thought as he is a superb
musician. You had to be to get praise from Frank Zappa!

Butterfly Ball was released before this live prefomance was made in Royalt
Albert Hall. And I think it working better on the studio album. Dio is
simply great, as well as Coverdale, Hughes, Tony Ashton ++++. Gillan is not
making any tributes here.

And to be honest.. who else could play "Froggy" but Ronnie James.

He, he

Eddie auditioned for Rainbow for the slot ultimately filled by David
Stone (after Carey's departure).
RJD spoke about this years ago, right after HE left Rainbow.

Apparently, Jobson made the mistake of picking up his violin during the
audition and playing some dazzling stuff. TMIB's ego couldn't handle
this so Ritchie muttered "Get him out of here".

And that is pretty sad. This talent is what made me excited when I saw
this thread. I say if the Rainbow reunion does happen and they can't
find a keyboard player - call Jobson.

Some things just never change do they, a great talent like Eddie Jobson,
treated like that. Does any one else wonder why I am so sick of Rickie's ego
games.

You are so right.

Well it goes like this some people never learn, and I guess Rickie is just one
of them.

He is really great player and writer, but... Lately he had tried to
re-create UK with Wetton, they started to work and... nothing for a
years. It was 95 when they started, I believe... Wetton said something
like "It was a longest project, 3 years, and 2 songs!". :-) Maybe
Jobson just isn't a niciest person to work with???

Cheers,
Vladimir.

Maybe Wetton isn't the nicest person to work with? :^) What got me
most excited was the fact of pairing Rickie with a rock violin player.
That could be cool but as we already established, Rickie's ego can
probably not handle that.

Wetton has been in more bands than anybody else. Does that mean
anything. Nevertheless, both his solo-album Arkangel and the UK album
Legacy should be released soon, Arkangel March 6th. Both have been
postponed several times already, though.

Rob.

Arkangel was released for about a year... Or you mean, in USA?
Very good album. Or I told it already? :-)) About UK - I never heard about
it's release... I'm subcribing to Asia mailing list, so if there will be
something like this, they would probably mention it. Wetton also released some
new album called 'Chasing the Deer', a short album, as soundtrack to
something... I guess it's not as interesting...

Cheers,
Vladimir.

Arkangel as been out in Japan for months now - it's a great album, and
features some guitar by a certain Mr. Fripp.

Later,
Mark
