Has anyone heard of Randy California, ex-Spirit guitarist (RIP)
replacing Ritchie temporarily in 1972? Apparently Ritchie had hepatitis
during this time. Found this info at the following Whitesnake website:
http://www.redestb.es/personal/cover/homepage.htm
Anyone have any info?

Yes, that's quite well known around here. The DP "Illustrated Biog"
says that DP performed as a four-piece at Flint, Michigan on 31 March.
Then rehearsed with Al Kooper for a day, but he called in sick the
next day. Then rehearsed with Randy for a couple of days, followed by
one gig, in Quebec in April 6. Apparently it wasn't too bad, but the
rest of the lads decided that Ritchie was such an integral part of the
sound, that they decided not to do any more shows without him.

Highlights of the Quebec gig were Randy playing Child In Time on slide
guitar, and the first-ever onstage performance of When A Blind Man
Cries.

Wonder what a good-quality recording of this show would be worth? :-)

BTW, this episode *is* mentioned in the DP FAQ, which is being
renovated as we speak.....isn't it?

And it's now being handled by Michael Collins.

And who is responsible for that? (Hint: not me.) ;^)

I'm not 100% sure but I don't think it's there. It will show up on the
site some day but I think it has to be done right.

Was this ever performed with Ritchie?

A quick flick through Ingo's book suggests that the answer is "no",
and that the next time (after 6 Apr 72) that Purple performed it was 3
Dec 93, with Satriani, in Osaka.

I hear Randy California replaced Blackmore for one concert when Blackmore
had taken ill and then they dropped the tour. Wish I knew how that
sounded.
