I remember that Rickie stated that Jan was one of the finest players in
the business. All I really remember about Jan is the fact that he used to
play a HAGSTRUM guitar (I believe it was the "SWEDE" model and perhaps was
one of the earliest "signature" models made, although not an official Jan
Akkerman name on it). Hagstrums were nice guitars. In my Will Robinson
days i played a HAGSTRUM II model. Nice thin neck and took beatings really
well. I just sold mine (a 1965 model) as it would have cost more to fix it
than what it is worth.

Mmm I can't imagine why Ritchie would
mention Jan as a favourite player when not
being influenced by him. But then again,
maybe it's easier to mention some great
player when your not-at-all influenced by
him...(that's the opposite of what Yngwie did
in his early days: complete denial of Ritchie as
an influence! well anyway, he wisened up or
maybe trimmed down his ego....:)

Yes he did and on the hit "Sylvia".
In fact, didn't that pre-show tape that Ritchie dragged around for about 10
years have some Focus tracks on it? Is he still using it?

Okay, R-O, as an experienced and highly capable guitarist, tell me: do you think
it's possible to think someone's a great player but not be influenced by them? As
a mediocre vocalist/bass player, I can certainly point to examples of both who
might have impressed me, but from whom I assimilated nothing into my approach.
Like Freddy Mercury. And the bass player of Primus.

Sure. I think Brian May is a great player as is Nookie Edwards and Hank B
Marvin. They have no influence on my playing though. I think it is who you
really listen to that is going to have an influence on your playing. You
have heard me make enough noise on the guitar to know that i have no RB,
Keaggy influences in my style of playing (which is pretty lame). Hey we
miss you here in Florida too!

That would be Jan Akkerman, guitar; Bert Ruiter, bass; Pierre Van Der
Linden, drums; organ/flute/vocals, Thijs Van Leer.
The reason I can remember that is because he sings the introduction
during Hocus Pocus.
Questions? Answers! Answers? Questions!
Yes, Jan co-wrote it with Thijs van Leer.(I
assume Thijs wrote the yodelling-parts)
From the second album Moving Waves.
The US-single version was slightly different
and a lot faster!
