I think someone asked for details of this.Issue 13 of the DPAS's Stargazer
magazine printed the London Evening Standard's report headlined "Rock star held
after a scuffle".
EX DEEP PURPLE guitarist Richard Blackmore,32,is in jail in Vienna after a
scuffle in which a security guard's jaw was broken at a concert given by his
current group Rainbow.
Beer was poured over the head of the guard, who was trying to stop fans storming
the stage, and the scuffle broke out when he protested.
One of the group's technicians,American Gerald Oxford, was also arrested when a
free fight broke out as police arrived.
Rainbow were due to start a British tour, the last leg of a 42-date trek through
Europe,on October 31,playing four dates at London's Rainbow Theatre from
November 11 to 14.
Police took Blackmore from the Vienna Stadhalle Theatre after the Tuesday night
concert.Bailwas refused and he missed a concert engagement in Munich last
night.
No charges have yet been brought.
The British Consulate in Vienna expects he will appear in court before the
weekend.
"I saw Blackmorelast night," said a member of the Consulate staff today."He
looked as well as you could expect anyone to look after they found themselves
unexpectedly in a foreign jail."
The group's publicist,Jenny Halsall said:"So far I've heard half a dozen
conflicting reports of what happened, and I'm amazed by it all.Anyone who has
been to one of Ritchie's shows knows that he often ends his act by showering
the front few rows with champagne or wine. All I can assume is that the Austrian
security guards objected,or that the guards were getting heavy with the kids
and Ritchie objected. He's certainly not one of the wild men of rock,he's a very
quiet person. And he's experienced enough not to let his act get out of hand."

Issue 14 of Stargazer subsequently reported:
Ritchie Blackmore,you may remember,had a disagreement with a bouncer during a
concert in Vienna on October 4,1977.Well the incident cost him just 5,200
pounds after the court heard how Blackmore (32) had been angered by a steward
pushing fans from the stage, and had poured beer on him and kicked him in the
face.Blackmore is appealing (says the report!).Jan 25,1978.

The story is correct, but the dates are wrong. The concert in Vienna was
not on October 4. On October 4 Rainbow were in Holland, The Hague. I know
this for sure because I was there.
As I stated before on this newsgroup; Dio is refering to this incident on
the video Rainbow Munich October 20.
As I recall, Ritchie was released from prison and drove directly to the
Olympiahalle Munich and the concert started. The fans waited for many
hours.

Even though I'm a huge fan of Rainbow and live in Holland as well, I
wasn't there. I was busy celebrating my second birthday that very day :-)

There are many beautiful days still ahead of you and you only missed a standard
show.

Yeah, like October 12th!!!

Early Rainbow is still one of my favourites. It's such a shame I was too
young to experience it all at the time. I was very thrilled to hear RB
had reformed Rainbow again after he had left DP and I finally saw them
in October 1995 in Rotterdam.

Then in 1996 I saw DP twice (Rotterdam and Zwolle) and now I will
hopefully see them again on October 12 in Rotterdam. I cant't wait!

Looking again at issue 13 of Stargazer,I'm very confused. On the tour review
page it says:
October 4 The Hague Congressebau:Blackmore arrested after the concert following
some problems with a concert commissionaire (boouncer!).German dates rearranged
after he was jailed overnight.

Tour dates are listed but there is no date given for Vienna.Yet the newspaper
report clearly refers to the incident being in Vienna. Can anyone clear this up?

The Blackmore incident happened on October 18th in Vienna. Rainbow had
scheduled two shows at Olympiahalle in Munich, Germany (Oct 19th and
20th). Ritchie was held in the jail until morning of Oct 20th, when he
was let out and then he supposedly "drove like hell" with a Porsche
from Vienna to Munich to play at the second show. That show was
somewhat important, as it was going to be filmed by German
television. He made it and thanks to that, we have now that show that
has been aired every now and then on European TV channels.

I posted this also to the alt.music.dio newsgroup, I guess people
there are also interested in this thread ;)

Nothing happened in The Hague, Congresgebouw, Prins Willem Alexanderzaal on
October 4th 1977. Believe me I was there and it was a normal standard show,
no incidents at all. I was sitting 3rd row and had a great view on
Blackers. Even made some nice pictures (didn't I Tapio ?)

The incident happened in Vienna.

That would be a miracle considering he didn't get his driving license till
about 1993. I was teaching him to drive way back in 1987 and that was in his
driveway and deserted parking lots in the dead of night.
All the best, Stuart.

. . . well then, with 10-odd years' experience now, can he drive *and*
throw a flour bag at an old lady, at the same time??

:)

Bye!

Maybe his drummer, the late Powell, was driving him to Munich
