Check out this website that shows the top 100 greatest guitarists. I
feel really bad that Ritchie Blackmore, being my favorite guitarist, is
last at 100. www.scaruffi.com/music/guitar.html
I also don't understand why Guitar Magazine put Kurt Cobain and Prince
up there. Like either one is better than Ritchie, that's a joke. Steve
Morse, though he's a great guitarist, is even in front of Ritchie
Blackmore. What are your thoughts and comments about this? Thanks for
reading.

I think it's great that fianlly someone is trying to raise a discussion,
based on taste, which focuses on the talents of Ritchie Blackmore and
Steve Morse (and others). It's just the kind of dicussion we need here.
Long may it rage!

Nah, don't feel bad about it, scaruffi ;-) Believe it or not when they write
these lists it's actually meant as a Great Honor to be listed as Last, as is in
this case with My Pal Ritchie!

I'm surprised no one else picked up on this ;-)

BTW these lists don't really mean much anymore. The Greatest Guitarist BY FAR
is The Nuclear Warrior ;-) Check out the Nuclear Holocaust at

What the bloody hell? They say that Kurt Cobain is better than Blackmore?
Kurt Cobain couldn't play guitar if his life depended on it, and I suspect
that's how he died. But on stage it always worked out, I always say that
nothing has made me laugh as much as a Kurt Cobain solo.

I've heard that Prince was pretty good, but better than Blackmore??? Come
on! Even though Blackmore never switched to any of the new techniques
doesn't mean that he doesn't play as fast as most of the "new" guys like
Steve Vai and Van Halen and people like that, it just sounds like he's
slower because he playes the old fashioned way. And anyone with a couple of
ears can hear that he is more creative than anybody else.

I like Vai and Van Halen and Morse and everybody who plays their instrumen
very, very well, like they do. But there is some sort of magic that makes so
many people say that Blackmore is their favorite guitarist!

Since Purple haven't been any particulary big in the states, I think not
many Americans knows who Ritchie Blackmore is. Cause he always ends up much
higher in European votes.

The problem with polls like this is people often base their voting on
who they like rather than actual knowledge of how well an artist plays.
Keeping this in mind, you quickly realise such polls are a complete
waste of time.

I remember reading Creem in 1978 and the best of categories were nothing
but KISS. In '85, the best keyboardist was won by...Eddie Van Halen!
Needless to say, I don't pay attention to magazine polls. I pay
attention to the Steve Cutlip poll, and it says his favorite 5
guitarists are, in no particular order, Ritchie Blackmore, Steve Morse,
Joe Satriani, Al DiMeola & Stevie Ray Vaughan. Anyone else?

I think that most "Top 100", "Top 10", etc., lists tend to reflect
mostly popularity, not talent. In the US, people are going to identify
with whatever they are subjected to the most. And unfortunately for
Ritchie Blackmore, most people aren't even aware that he is still
performing, albeit not rock music but medieval.

All the guys I work with are hard rock fans, and when I asked them, not
one knew what Ritchie was doing these days. The radio doesn't play his
stuff, nor has it played new DP since 1991 or so (at least where I
live). So.....that's why people like Kurt Cobain, Prince, James
Hetfield, Nikki Sixx and Joe Perry keep getting votes, because they've
been huge in the public eye in recent years, and they're still fresh in
everyone's mind.

I remember reading a David Gilmour interview about five years ago, where
he said that Roger Waters had kept coming up to him and thanking DG for
winning RW all the late-70's "Best Bassist" polls... because DG had
played the bass parts on a lot of the PF stuff. Just goes to show...

Because they are obviously idiots who know NOTHING about being a great
player. Great guitar player these days means who is POPULAR and that is
all it means. Takes a lot of talent to play 3 chords and eat a bullet.
Record companies are good at getting the press to make stars out of their
clients. Look at the Stones. Average musicians on a good day.

I don't believe that was the point of the previous post Terry. The
term versatility is not the same as talent or popularity. Blackmore has
stated that Morse's playing knocked him for a loop the first time he
heard it. In particular he seemed to be impressed with Morse's country
style picking, with is something Blackmore does well, but isn't one of
his strengths. It's probably true that for an audience of Deep Purple
fans Ritchie walking onstage would elicit a greater response than Morse
would. However, going crazy for a musician walking onstage has nothing
to do with their talent. An example would be the way Kiss fans wet their
pants over Ace Frehley's return. Does that in any way mean Frehley is a
great guitarist? I think not. Versatility is only one aspect of rating a
musicians talent. No one is going to try and convince you that Morse is
a better guitarist than Blackmore, but confusing your opinion of Morse's
abilities with your opinion of whether or not he belongs in Purple is a
moot point and ultimately a dead end street. Cheers, Jim C.

Ok, I can't resist a thing like this. These were my votes for Classic Rock
when they had a poll a year or two ago. I think Page won and Blackmore came
second in that poll. As you can see I haven't included either of them, so
you don't have to point that out. ;-) Please feel free to disagree!

1. Jeff Beck - The meanest of them all! Eric Clapton has described him as
the best guitarist in the world. Who am I to argue?

2. Steve Howe - Listen to his unaccompanied solo on Sound Chaser and you'll
understand why he's here! Virtuosity and diversity are his trademarks, and
that's a rare combination!

3. Gary Moore - Great riffs - yes. Astounding technique - certainly. But
this is not what makes him great. It is his melodic and emotional playing.
He's one of the few guitarists that can bring out tears in my eyes!

4. Carlos Santana - Talking about melody and emotion! When he's in good form
he can probably cure the worst depression.

5. Al DiMeola - May I be so bold to include a jazz-rock / Latin guitarist
here? He plays flationetts (how do you spell that?) faster than most
guitarists play normally and he makes you feel like you're racing the devil
on a Spanish highway!

6. Steve Vai - Zappa's little Italian virtuoso is just that, perhaps more
than anyone. He gives a personal touch to everything from an intricate Zappa
composition to a Whitesnake ballad. And the way he makes the most melodic
line sound just slightly atonal!

7. David Gilmour - Unmistakable sound and a capability to transform just
about every song into an anthem!

8. Steve Morse - If there is one fan of good guitar playing in this world
who hasn't checked out The Dregs, I suggest they do so!

9. Jimi Hendrix - What can I possibly say that haven't been said at least a
hundred times already?

10. Janne Schaffer - I didn't have to include a Swede, but this guy's mix of
(American) West Coast and Nordic melancholy deserves a place here. Great
improviser too!

Hmmm, maybe I should have included John Petrucci and...
...a dozen others!

Prince is a very good guitarist, but he is not in the same league
as Steve Morse, Joe Satriani, Ritchie Blackmore, Steve Vai, Robert Fripp,
Jeff Beck, Frank Zappa, John williams, Eliot Fisk, Paul Galbreath,
Al DiMeola or John McLaughlin. There's a reason why so many musicians
respect the guitarists I've named. They are immensely talented musicians
that can play practically any type of music they wish to play. However,
if I were Prince, I would be irked that my name was on list with
Kurt Cobain. Prince is a hell of a lot better musician than Cobain ever
was.

Basically we all know Ritchie is the greatest. But a lot of us are not
interested or just don't have the time to vote in some of those crappy music
magazines. Do you realised that many of the top guitarists in the top 100
are now dead? Jimi Hendrix had always wanted that recognition when he was
alive. He died pretty broke.
Deep Purple will be performing live in Australia in early March and all the
advertisements on the radio and televisions kept playing and showing Morsie
& Ted the Mechanic jumping around playing/singing songs like Smoke On The
Water, Highway Star, Black Night, etc. All songs made famous by the Master
Blaster, Ritchie Blackmore!!! Morsie and Ted knew very well they will be
"kaput" without the established name of Deep Purple. Rod Evans and Nick
Simpler probably have more rights to the name than these two.

Naturally it will not make sense to you. DP is slowly going into liquidation
