I just wanted to get everyone's opinion on this. (Maybe this has already been
discussed on the NG. If so, sorry to bring it up again and bore everyone.)

My younger brother gets great pleasure from annoying me. (Isn't that the way
it always is?) One of his favorite pastimes is teasing me about DMB and my
obsession with them. So one day he said he heard that Dave is gay. I went
into my big explanation of how he's not and you shouldn't believe everything
you hear, etc. And he started singing, "I say my hell is the closet I'm stuck
inside...See, he's in the closet!" That got me thinking. When did the gay
rumor start? Could that song have started it? If the rumor started before
SMTS, was the song maybe Dave's way of addressing it? Sorry to bring up such a
possibly meaningless topic, but I'm home sick from school and have nothing
better to do.

is gay, who cares? its not really anyones buisness. tell your brother even if
he is gay, he could get a lot more women then him! :)

As far as I know, dave is not anything other than hetero. Regarding
the SMTS lyrics, I have heard that they refer to Peter Griesar, who is
openly gay. Or they could be completely unrelated.

Well Dave did propose to a girl a few times, so he's probably not gay.

Actually, he's not.

I wasn't asking if he is gay, I just wanted to know about the origins of the
rumor in relation to SMTS!

And Peter grieser did write the song. it was him, boyd and dave who got
writing credits for the song. I never heard anything about peter being gay,
but just because I haven't heard it doesn't mean it isn't true.

SMTS is one of the first songs (since '92) that DMB played, so it couldn't be
Dave's responce to the rumors. The rumors weren't around back then.

The rumor also started because people thought the line in crash,"hike up your
skirt a little more" was "hike up your skirt little BOY", but seriously, why
would a boy be wearing a skirt anyway....????

Maybe he was Scottish... I'm just kidding, I know he's not gay, not that
there's anything wrong with that.

There is no way Dave is gay, and if he was, he still kicks ass.

I heard somewhere that that line and song is about rape, it always made me curious
if it was true, but I have no idea. Just something to throw out there.

One day my mom came home from work when i was in the middle of listening to
Crash and tells me some guy she works with told her Dave's gay because of that
exact line. I didn't pay much attantion, seeing as my mom isn't the sharpest
person when it somes to mass media (every week she still has to ask me what
channel ER is on), and the people she works with are just like her (are all
chemists like that??)

Well, I really can't interpret it, but in the 2/13/92 show, Dave
comments that SMTS is Boyd's song, and that he brought it to the band.
But, that it has changed since then. Or something like that, it's not a
direct quote. So it's my guess that Boyd is credited with the music,
and Dave and Peter credited for the lyrics. Also, about the whole Peter
being gay issue, that was brought up on Nancies before, and the answer
is he is not gay.

Personally, does it really matter if Dave is gay or not? Dave's sexuality
is none of my or anyone's business and it doesn't affect my love for the
thing that really matters--> the music

just voicn' my opinion-

From what I know about SMTS, it is about a child growing up. The "closet"
basically means the child is stuck with all these thoughts inside his head until he
learns to speak....thus when he finally can speak, he has "so much to say". There
is other evidence about this growing up theory...treadding trodden trails would
allude to doing what your parents, grandparents did and following their footsteps.

Thanks. I like that explanation. I'm sorry to all of the people who thought
originally I was inquiring about Dave's sexuality. I wasn't, I was asking
about the song!

I think this may be what it is actually about, I've heard this before. Right or
wrong I think it's a pretty good interpretation
