I've been getting AOL news stories about DMB, and I just went away for a few
days and I come back to find about 5 stories about violence at the Hartford
shows. I was just wondering if anyone was there and saw what the reason for
all the violence was. I never expected to see/hear about violence at a DMB
concert, at least not violence on this level where tear gas and pepper spray
was used. Any comments about what's going on?

There were several reasons:
1). massive underage drinking
2). no law enforcement early in the day
3). many people without tickets getting drunk [non-dmb fans].
4). hartford is notorious for violence and concert riots.

It really has NOTHING to do with Dave Matthews Band. It could have been
virtually any band that would bring thousands of young people to one place.

hey

Let me tell you my concert experience. I am 19 and going to University of
Hartford in the fall. All three nights this is what happened. My friend who
is 18 packed a two coolers full of beer. For his 16 year old girl friend and
her friends who are 16 and 15. We then met up with about 25 other kids all
with coolers full of beer and assorted alcoholic beverages and went to the
concert. 25 kids under 21 drinking and smoking, whatever in the jai alai
parking lot. Unfortunately, most of them didn't remember that they opened with
#41 because they were so wrecked. That is the typical DMB concert atmosphere
in CT. All the people around us were all underaged as well.

i was looking through the hartford newspaper and they listed some of the people
arrested:

Jed Lamagdelaine, 18, of South Hadley, Mass., assault and breach of peace,
$2,500;

Troy Lavigne, 26, of Bristol, possession of narcotics, interfering with police,
$10,000;

Jerrold Paradis, 23, of Enfield, interfering with police, breach of peace,
$2,000;

Robert Simmons, 19, of West Hartford, disorderly conduct, $1,000;

Christopher Young, 26, of Somers, interfering with police and breach of peace,
$2,000;

Richard Williams, 30, of Pittsburgh, Pa., breach of peace, $500;

Brian Michaud of Bristol, breach of peace, $500;

Thomas Quigley, 21, of Old Lyme, trespassing and disorderly conduct, $1,500;

Spencer Morgenthau, 20, of Avon, breach of peace, $500;

Heather Sperraza, 26, of Brattleboro, Vt., interfering with police, written
promise to appear in court;

Scott Wilson, 19, of West Hartford, trespassing, $500 bond;

Ryan Skal, 18, of East Hartford, trespassing, written promose to appear in
court;

Joseph Quaranta, 23, of New Milford, breach of peace, $1,000 bond;

Jeffrey Kishel, 21, of Killingworth, trespassing, $500 bond;

Jason Perkins, 21, of Easton, disorderly conduct, $500 bond;

Paul Gullo, 24, of Meriden, breach of peace, trespassing, interfering with
police, $1,000 bond.

I would say "massive under age drinking" is going a little overboard.

Drew, we all appreciate your love for statistics, but merely the fact that the
majority of people actually detained and charged were over 21 does not prove that
there wasn't a lot of underage drinking going on. It just proves that the majority
of people detained and charged were over 21.

Yeah, about a dissertation's worth, look at the previous 3 days.

I didnt say that there wasnt any under age drinking at the concert. I said that
most of the rioters were in thier early twenties and under age drinking did not
cause the riots.

Keep in mind that it is against the law for newspapers to publish the names of
minors who are arrested. This explains why all the ones in your article were over
18.

You need to keep in mind that it is against the law for newspapers to publish the
names of arrested minors.

This explains why only those listed were 18 or older.

Leslie is exactly right. This is the reason why it seems like there
weren't many under-agers causing trouble.

Most all of them published in the paper were over 21. Keep in mind that it is
illegal to publish the names of minors (under 18) that are arrested.

Not to get picky, but in Connecticut things are a bit different. People 16 and
over are tried as adults and you can regularly see the names of 16 and 17 year
olds who have been arrested in the Hartford Courant.
But I am definitely not saying there should not have been hundreds of underage
kids arrested, but if there had been any 16 or 17 year olds arrested, their
names would have been in the paper.

Can they even post the names of juveniles detained? I know they can't
here in California if it's something less than murder unless the accused
is 17 or older.

I get the Courant every day; out of the 55 listed, I'm guessing 10-15 were
over 20. And I believe the age is 16, because there were several 16 and 17
year olds in there.

And underage drinking was a HUGE problem there. I'm 27, and I drank there,
but I didn't fall down puking or have to be carried around. It's called
MODERATION, kids!
