Hi Y'all

I'm a thirty year old guy, and a musician to boot, who has never
smoked a doobie. No lie. Seen it, smelled it, been all around it, but
never took a puff of the stuff. It just never appealed to me. But now
I realize that it's a natural herb and has lots of benefits, and so
I'm thinking about giving it a try.

It just seemed that all through school, the guys who were smoking lots
weren't exactly burning up the honors charts; their hair was mussy,
their clothes looked like they had been rummaged from a dumpster, and
they talked like slowly-poured molasses. No slam against regular
smokers-- I hear that Carl Sagan toked every day since the late
sixties. But here I am, thinking about giving it a try just to giggle
and check out some music in a new way, and I just want a few opinions.
Is it better than slamming a few shots of whiskey down? Does it make
your brain slow? Best ways to smoke? Yada, yada, yada.

Just curious.

Well, you tend to look the way you want to look when you're stoned, although
comfort is the most important thing. Best way to smoke? Roll a joint. I
prefer it to drinking because a room full of drunks tends to get violent, a
room full of stoners is very mellow. You would be surprised how many people
smoke it. It seems like it's required if you are part of the media (just
from my experience). And make sure you do it with people you trust or like,
especially the first time. They can make the experience that much better.
One last thing, have some food handy.

Gotta say just one thing - MODERATION. I'm a well paid Computer Programmer
and I indulge a bit. I don't look mussy and I think I live a pretty normal
life. It's safer to me than Alcohol.

Don't do anything you don't want to do and take care of yourself.

Better than drink because you don't have to piss every 5 mins and when you
are high, listen to some DMB!! You will really feel the music!!!

I've never smoked up (I've never actualy even had a drink). I have some
self-control issues (as in it terrifies me to actually think about losing
it) and a history of alcohol abuse in my family (not immediate, thank
goodness), so I just never really thought it was a risk worth
taking. Seeing as how your message indicates that you're seriously
interested in checking out risks vs. benefits, looking in the Medical
Journals for harmful side effects of pot smoking is the best way to
go. Experiments, when done properly, are quite unbiased and can let you
know if the experience will do any lasting harm to your body or mind. Some
of the smokers here can probably give you places to look for more
information. Just make sure you check out the arguments on both sides
before you make a decision. And always take into consideration the quality
of the sources you're using. :-)

It is my impression, however, that alcohol is much more damaging to the
body than pot smoking is to the lungs, although pot smoking may have more
lasting effects on one's mind. Alcohol's legality doesn't really enter
into the question, because the primary reason pot is illegal is because of
the lumber and tobacco industries. Therefore, I wouldn't consider legality
as a legitimate reason to use alcohol over pot, at least when considering
health effects.

A good source is www.norml.org. They are a group that is trying to legalize
hemp, but they have some links to some good sources, and are less biased
than any gov't sit you'll find.

This is my guy, right here. I too have never touched the stuff, and you
should be able to say so proudly. I know that many people do, and I am not
going to try and sway people any way, but I think there has got to be
something better to do with your time than smoke weed. Like, oh, anything!

smoke organic. no brick, no chemmies! you'll have more fun smoking organic
anyway. although lord knows i've rolled many a spliff with an eighth of
dirty raid weed, but those were the old days.

anyway, your best bet for getting started is to just ask some of those
people you're always around if you can sit in. i'm sure they wont mind. if
you're getting it yourself, roll joints! it's cheaper then getting a pipe,
plus it's safer to drive around smoking a joint then puffing a bowl.

whatever you do, my best advice is to be careful! although pot has
personally never done me wrong, you can never be sure how it will effect
you. i've seen first-time smokers TWEAK OUT after just one bowl. so take
it easy, and try not to drink your first time smoking.

peace and enjoy!

matt

ps: if you're feeling brave, find a friend with a bong, and go that route.
but only if you're feeling ballsy, especially since it's your first time.

i have smoked before, but never have gotten high. based on everything i've
read and heard, i agree that pot is not nearly as bad as alcohol.
actually, i hate alcohol, because people always seem to get hurt by it
(ie, drunk drivers) and the same doesnt go for pot.

The same does go for pot in a way. Not as extreme as drinking, but
perception is off, no idea how much... From everything I've read, pot does
seem to be MUCH safer than alcohol, longterm effects and short-term

You won't just be able to smoke for the first time and have this great
experience. First of all make sure you smoke it the right way. It could
take several attempts at smoking before you actually get high. Make sure
you have a friend with you who can help you if you start flippin. I'm just
sayin that I can smoke 10 joints and be normal(pun intended) but when I
first got high and several times after that I was Fucked up! 6 hits of
hashish and I could barley walk or talk. You also get real sleepy and have
to crash to let it wear off.

Honestly the first few times were not the most enjoyable experience. It's
not like acid where you are so flipped out you think you may just freak.
It's just what you have to go through at first. Once you have it down
though you will be open to whole new way of looking at everything. It's a
good thing, it's a fresh perspective. You will not feel violent, you will
feel at peace, happy, and less stressed. Forget about your problems for a
while. Don't worry about getting caught because you did nothing wrong. You
can't get arressted for being high. You could tend to get paroniod though,
like if your in your house you may get up and look out the window for no
reason. It's just that it enhances all your thoughts and feelings so keep
everything positive. Listen to music no matter what! Listen to your
favorite album ever that you may be sick of. You will hear it like it was
the first time. You will hear sounds that you never heard before. Then from
now on you will hear those sounds high or not. All my drug experiences have
gone hand in hand with music. Without music I would never get high! Oh and
your a musician? Wait till you play your instrument. Your creativity will
be enhanced dramaticaly! Anyone who wants to argue this is a fool! I would
hate to think of what beautiful art and music would have never been created
if not for mind alteration. Why not see the world from as many perspectives
as you can. Anyway I said enough. Peace

big boxes, two sections from the captain crunch in the organic section...had
stuff about the fatty and amino acids and fiber and stuff about
hemp.stuff.....anyway, i was like, i thought hemp was illegal, yo? what's

DI IT, DO IT Don't listen to him he's the devil!
I think people have the right to make up their own mind! I bet you guzzel
alcohol all night long. Everything effects everything. There are a billion
things you do that will effect you in a bad way. How bout tabacco?
Perfectly legal, millions of people on it. We all know what that will do to
you. Alot worse than the evil weed. Sure if you smoke it 24 hours a day
like you did it may slightly effect your memory, but it would no way ever
turn you into a vegetable like you make it out. It's benefits outweigh it's
disadvantages.

Hmmm... I'm glad to be your guy, :-) , but the tone of your post seems to
suggest that I might recommend that smoking weed is bad. At one point in
my life, I would have been right there with you, but as I lost my Midwest
conservative mentality, I realized that the world contains much more gray
than we would like. I would agree that there are things that I much
prefer doing to smoking weed (obviously since I've never done it). I also
agree that there is no shame in admitting that you don't smoke and I
personally catch MUCH more flack for not drinking than for not smoking
up. I've been around people smoking up before and just said that it was
something I didn't do and they were *so* cool about it. Not a problem at
all. "Some people like to smoke a bowl, some don't", right? However, every
time I go to a bar with someone new, I have to explain all the reasons for
why I don't drink. Sometimes I lie and say it's for religious reasons,
because that's the quickest way to get them to shut up about it.

Anyways, it's cool that you can chill without weed, not because there's no
weed, but because you can chill at all. There are a lot of unhappy people
in this world. I'm certainly not going to look down on a happy smoker, as
long as their smoking doesn't have a negative effect on their life or the
lives of others. And, seriously, you could stick the words "drinker" or
"masturbater" in for "smoker" and "masturbating" or "drinking" in for
"smoking", and I feel that the sentence is the same. Whatever you do, as
long as you don't hurt yourself or other people, can't be wrong if it
makes you happy. To go totally controversial and off-topic here, that's
what I think all organized religions believed, before
(primarily good-meaning) authoritarian leaders got ahold of them and
changed all the rules because they felt that people weren't smart enough
to be able to make decisions regarding hurt caused to themselves or
others. And the big question is whether the authoritarian people were
right (and the answer to that question I do not know).

Enough philosophical discussions. Time to code some more simulations for
integrating high dimensional likelihood surfaces for missing data
problems... sigh.

Yeah... The first 3 or 4 times I tried it, I watched everyone else around
me in hysterics...and I was just kinda sitting there, smoking it right but
still not feeling it. Then one time, I took 3 or 4 long tokes....and just
kinda flew away. The next thing I remember was playing my friend's bass
better than I thought I could...and then I kinda drifted off again. I was
never unconscious or blacked-out.. Just didn't care much about the world
around me. That was kinda scary...

Nowadays, if I do indulge, I get the normal reaction everyone else does. I
think my body just had to get used to it, and set up its own equilibrium.
Tho every once in a while, I do lose track of time for a few minutes here
and there..almost as if I dozed off. Sucks playing poker like that. :-)

Hemp _cultivation_ is illegal in the US. Hemp product sales are not. So we
import the finished products. Commercial-grade hemp is non-smokable, but the
US government is stupid and stubborn. In their mind, cannabis is cannabis.

Of course, I support the legalization of smokable hemp too...but that's a
different story.

i must concur on the music statement - you hear things on records when you
are stoned that you just dont hear regularly, and afterwards they stand out
much more. whether it is a hidden lick the producer stuffed in to flesh
something out or some crazy harmonics, you hear things better. i also find
that when eating, you can distinguish ingredients...for example if you were
eating a choc chip cookie, you can taste the sugar, butter, the sugar in the
choc, the milk in the choc...etc... its a really interesting experience.
listening to your favorite albums and eating your favorite foods in a whole
new light is a very cool feeling.

i noticed it seems for me at least that one sense is heightened, if you can
call it that, whereas if it's sight, everything looks beautiful and wonderful,
etc. if it's taste, and you just wanna eat, chicken wings, cookies, candy,
alcohol, whatever, it just tastes amazing, if it's smell...its never smell, and
sound...music is incredible, you just feel so alive, and part of it, and
definitely noticed those other parts of the music, and if it's touch, well
certain activities are great.
