==============================================================================

There's a great deal movement on this week's chart, with three
singles entering the top ten, two entering the top five, a new number one,
thirteen bullets, and six debuts. I believe all this activity is due to the
increasing number of voters participating each week. Over the last few months,
the number of voters has increased by almost 800. This significant increase in
voters makes the Singles Chart much more accurate; the impact of statistical
anomalies, such as mass voting for a song, are lessened, thereby providing a
better reflection of the popularity of singles on a global scale.
Keep up that voting.

The Bee Gees only manage a solitary week on top with "Alone" as
Collective Soul's "Precious Declaration" surges past to claim their first
number one on our chart. "Precious..." is still a very young single so it has
the potential to stay on top for a while. It is presently number one on the
American Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, and starting to crossover to the Pop
chart, where it's number 65 in its third week. It's also charting in Japan,
where it was number 24. Don't count out the Bee Gees, however. "Alone" is
presently in the top ten in Austria, Germany, Ireland, and Switzerland. Also,
it's been a top ten hit in the United Kingdom, and a top forty hit in Japan,
and, according to an American syndicated radio show I was listening to
Saturday night, it's number one in Poland. So don't be surprised if it returns
to the top, especially following the release of their critically acclaimed
album "Still Waters" in the United States in the next few weeks. U2's "Staring
At The Sun" is another strong contender for the top in the next couple weeks,
leaping nine spots from 13 to 4 this week. This track is enjoying some high
debuts this week, coming in at number three in the United Kingdom and
number 30 in the United States. Their previous single, "Discotheque", which
tumbles to 28 this week, is still going strong in Japan and Italy, where it's
numbers two and three respectively.

"Say You'll Be There" by the Spice Girls rises from 50 to 46 this
week fueled, most likely, by the increasing popularity of it in the Americas,
where "Wannabe" has run its chart course. "Say You'll..." is 29 on the
American airplay chart (up from 48) and should make the overall chart once it
is available as a commercial single in the next couple of weeks. "Say
You'll..." is also number three in Argentina and five in Venezuela. When
"Wannabe" was first released in the Americas, months after it had run its
course in Europe and Asia, it climbed back up our chart, and it looks like
"Say You'll..." is doing the same thing. Many consider "Wannabe" to be a
novelty hit and gauge the potential of the Spice Girls by how well the more
'serious' songs do. Consider what happened in Australia. "Wannabe" was number
one for eleven weeks and is one of the longest-running singles of all time on
the Australian chart. "Say You'll..." only managed to peak at 14. Fans of the
Spice Girls shouldn't worry about their Antipodean success, however, since
"2 Become 1" debuts in Australia at number 5. The act also had the three
aforementioned singles in the top ten in New Zealand simultaneously.
