NEW YORK (Aug. 16) - Led by Broadway star Chita Rivera, more than 50,000
fans at Yankee Stadium joined the grounds crew Friday night in doing the
dance craze sweeping the country - the Macarena.
The Yankees were trying to break the world record for the longest
Macarena ''line,'' set by 37,556 people at the Kingdome in Seattle for a
Mariners game June 29.
The Yankees announced the crowd at 50,724 for Friday night's game
against those same Mariners.
Rivera skipped out in front of the Yankees' first-base dugout after
the fifth inning and led the crowd in gyrating to the popular Latin dance
tune. Ken Griffey Jr. of the Mariners was among many players who watched
and smiled - but did not dance to the song by Los Del Rio.
The five members of the grounds crew, who usually perform a routine to
''YMCA'' while dragging the infield, followed along with Rivera.
''We rehearsed for about six hours,'' grounds crew member Brian Cooney
said before the game. ''I think we got it down pretty good.''
Earlier Friday, Cooney and his crew did the dance on NBC's ''Today''
show with weatherman Al Roker. A tape of that performance was shown before
the game on the scoreboard and several players, including Derek Jeter and
Mariano Duncan of the Yankees, stopped to watch.
As part of the Macarena Night promotion, compact discs of the album
''Macarena Club Cutz'' were given out to lucky fans.

BTW, you folks should have seen my five year-old son leading his entire
classroom in doing "The Macarena" last week. It was awesome!

By no means am I complaining about the masses enjoying this track. I
think everyone's opinions on THAT subject have already been heard.
This article was posted just out of humor. I mean, 57,000 people doing
the Macarena is quite funny. Only in America.....
