Hey guys,

Well, from what I can see, this group looks pretty much dead. Any chance of
resurrecting it?

I guess I should probably start by introducing myself, since I've never
posted here before. I have been a Dan fan for almost ten years now. I
remember hearing his music on the radio when I was very young, and in high
school, when I got into music from that time period, I noticed his music and
became a convert. The song that first hooked me was Leader of the band. I
had heard it several times before, but one night, when I was going through a
period of feeling really down on myself, the song really touched me.

Since that time, I've gobbled up everything Dan has released. My frustration
is that there are no official releases of live material from any but the
most recent time periods. Dan's voice seems to have changed quite a bit over
the years, and I would love to hear how that affected his live sound. I've
noticed that earlier tapes of live shows do exist, but these appear to be
bootlegs and thus illegal to purchase/own. Is this true? Are there any live
recordings, official or otherwise, that you guys feel are ok to have. Does
anyone know Dan's position on bootlegs?

Anyway, whether you have answers to these questions or not, I would really
like to see this group get going again if anyone is still interested.

I am absolutely interested in seeing this list's revivification, but
what I really need is word on how Dan's health is doing. My fingers are
crossed that the good news he communicated a year ago August 13 is
continuing and that he and his wife are thriving and happy and healthy.

I check back here occasionally, and mostly find chirping crickets. It's not
that there isn't much curiosty about DF. In his illness, he remains very
private, and any updates are extremely scarce. Don't know what his
feelings are regarding bootlegs, but I wouldn't imagine there is much of a
market for ones of him. I have a few which I cherish from early on in his
career. You are right about his voice changing over the years. It became
huskier and he lost his high range. Too bad, it was once so pure and
strong. I don't want to speculate as to why, but it's not unusual for the
voice to suffer from smoking and alcohol overuse. I sure hope that he
makes a full recovery and that someday is able to get back to enjoying
making music and performing.

This may sound strange, but Dan's voice actually changed after he had his
tonsils removed in 1982 or 1983. I am interested in trading Dan Fogelberg
shows if you'd like. Please email me at: fredgsanford @ hotmail.com

Thanks, Jim

I hold pretty much the same opinions as you do regarding why his voice
changed so much; I think age is also a factor.

One thing that's really cool about Dan is that no matter how much his
voice has changed, he still has his own distinctive musical stile and way of
saying things in his lyrics that makes it quite clear who the author of his
songs is. It's that distinction that makes we want to keep buying is
albums.

What shows do you have?

Yeah, he has always made it very clear that he likes his life kept very
private. I was expecting/hoping he would give us another birthday letter,
but I guess not... Oh well, I can understand his need for privacy.

Judging from the little that has been released, things don't sound too good;
I remember reading a report that the cancer had spread to his bones, though
I can't vouch for its accuracy. I hope that however log he is aloud to live,
he will be able to do so in comfort, and maybe by some miracle, even fully
recover and be able to make music for us again.

Actually, I believe he had them removed during the making of his Innocent
Age album; he refers to it in the 1981 Interchords interview.

I can't be sure this is accurate, but I think of the changes in Dan's voice
as having occurred in two phases. The first occurred when he had his tonsils
out. This left him with a lower range, but his voice was still very clear
and strong. If you listen to the two albums following The Innocent Age
(Windows And Walls and High Country snows) you can see that his voice never
reached the heights that it did on albums like Nether Lands and Phoenix. The
second occurred later and left his voice very ruff, as well as again
reducing his range. Listen to High Country Snows and then Exiles for an
example of what I'm talking about.

Speaking of live recordings again, I really wish I could get hold of Full
Moon Mansion; that's a really cool song.

Actually, I remember reading in articles and hearing in interviews, Dan
had tonsil surgery (as has been mentioned) and then quit smoking in the
early to mid 80s.

I still like his voice a lot, but it is different than it used to be.
He pronounceds vowels differently than he used to and doesn't quite
have the high range. That being said...

I think around the time of River of Souls/No Resemblance, I remember
not liking his voice. But I think recently with Full Circle, his voice
has some of the fullness and strength back again.
