THE REASON Not a big enough population here, it costs to much to travel
here, shit dollar $Aus to the $1 US, the artists are not as popular here
as the States.etc etc. The latter two have never ventured this way. Both
were coming but in Duritz case about 7 years ago his throat fucked up, with
DMB we had Sep 11. I presume Duritz throat is fixed by now? (just jealous,
nothing personal) enough whingeing. (that shpeal was the cost of getting the
review)
IN CONCERT
Probably the second best concert I have ever seen. (nothing compares to
Midnight Oil) He went for almost three hours in front of about 2500 people
(general admittance so I was about 15 metres from the front). First half was
mainly Gold, second half (after the encore was mainly the Heatbreaker CD. I
couldn't give you a track by track rundown as I don't know his music that
well. He did this amazing version Noboby Girl with a 10 minute jam session
in the middle. He did a slow start to New York New York and then went into a
fast version - amazing. Sweet Carolina and Winding Wheel are two songs that
come to mind from Heartbreaker. There was a 10 minute sort of jam session
towards the end where it appeared they were making it up as they went along.
There were beautiful versions of Rescue Blues and Stars go Blue. Overall it
was just an amazing concert. Very raw if you get the drift - they seemed to
decide between songs over a minutes silence what the next song was. There
were a couple of Whiskeytown songs which I didn't recognise as I only own
Gold, Heartbreaker and Pneumonia. Did an amazing cover of "Brown Sugar" and
the roadie seemed to play the guitar on the song. Awesome.
What else - someone requested Whiskeytown his comment was "fuck
whiskeytown"
He made up some song about some guy who got pissed off with the band because
they had a Jam session at their hotel at 5am waking the whole hotel up. It
was a terrible song but he warned us of that in advance. The story was good.
The man in the bathrobe knocking on his door at 5am was not too pleasant on
the eyes according to RA if you get the drift.
He got very pissed off with a guy who requested "summer of 69" towards the
end of the show. Called him a racist, a fucking idiot etc offered him his
money back and told him to get out. I thought he was a bit sensitive. One
would presume he would be use to it by now. Obviously not.
It was Australia day so he kept on calling it Happy U Day.
Someone in the front said they loved him. His response was I love you too
and I apologise in advance - quite amusing.
He wasn't too concerned about his lungs - no shortage of cigarettes being
smoked by all band members.
That's about it - an amazing concert with brilliant changes to most of his
songs which only added to the experience (ie it wasn't like simply listening
to the CDs) I have never been to a concert by such an artist that comes
across so unrehearsed in a good way if you get my drift. One would presume
each concert would be completely different, and it was probably the longest
concert I have seen.
I final thanks to alt.music.countingcrows who got me onto his music about
two months ago with their constant posts about him. I purchased all three
cds and have been listening to them constantly hence the reason I saw him.
That's about it - if there is any questions just ask and I will try and
answer. It is my first review so apologies if it is a shit review. Thanks
again for getting me into them even though you didn't know you were. Now it
is time for CC, Van Morrison and the DMB to visit.

The guitar tech 'Chief' played guitar in Brown Sugar, they didn't decide
between songs what to play, just before the bathrobe story & song, he bent
down to check the setlist and said "I can't remember how that goes....". In
between songs he'd change guitars, light up a smoke or have another drink,
he even fell over during one song, as he was pretty trashed, he was spitting
every now and then because of his sinus problem. He didn't even introduce
the rest of the band, Chief looked a little disappointed after the cover as
he was a big 'hit' in Sydney, people would chant "Chief! Chief! Chief!" when
he came out.
The bathrobe guy was because he bought some death/metal records and decided
to play them full bore at 5am. It was a crap song but that's not what he
does best.
I also went to the Sydney show and it wasn't as good as the Melbourne show,
he stuffed up a couple of times and took even longer between songs. The
Summer of 69 thing happened in Sydney also and I'd say he'd be getting
pretty tired of it, I know I would. My friend reckons he was more trashed
in Sydney but as we weren't as close (we were 5 people from the front last
night) it is hard to say. He didn't fall over in Sydney though.
Having listened to his CD's before seeing him live, the live show was a lot
better. I didn't expect a rock show as the CD's are pretty 'acoustic'.
Definitely good value for money.
Probably the 2nd best concert I've seen also, the 1st being Marvelous 3 who
played to a small crowd at the Evelyn Hotel a few years back.
'Big' bands who don't care about their fans don't come here in my opinion,
although a friend I met on a trek in Nepal lives in New Zealand and he says
it's even worse over there. He was pretty pissed off Ryan wasn't playing in
NZ.

I'm glad for you though that you could enjoy the show. Man, how much I'd love to
see him live.
