Ok, It's pretty quiet around here at the moment, so I thought I'd
contribute my end of year best of, seeing as I have only one more gig to
go to in 2001, and there are no more new releases this year that I plan
on buying, make of it what you will:

Albums:
1."Gold" - Ryan Adams. Title says it all.
2."Pneumonia" - Whiskeytown. Had this been released in it's original
form, I think I'd have picked it #1, but Ryan left Tilt-a-wirl off, so
it comes second. Still love those vocal harmonies between Ryan and
Caitlin.
3."Sebastopol" - Jay Farrar. Like a faithful old friend, Farrars songs
are solid, dependable, downbeat (mostly), and gorgeous.
4."The World Won't End" - The Pernice Brothers. Tunes that make you
think of summer and want to sing along, but lyrics that are much darker.
This is possibly the strongest record yet from Joe Pernice, and boasted
some of the best melodic pop songs you could possibly find.
5."Under A Sun" - Witness. Take on REM at their own game - and win! This
record is fantastic, and in my opinion deserved to do a hell of at lot
better than it has.
6."The Truth About Us" - Tim Easton. My favourite record from the first
few months of the year, when it rarely left my cd player.
7."Captured" - Trish Murphy. Like a cross between Jewel and Sheryl Crow,
with songs that grab you from the first time you listen to them.
8."A Man Under The Influence" - Alejandro Escovedo. A great record to
sit back and relax to.
9."Reveal" - REM. Yet another strong album from a great band.
10. "Time (The Revelator)" - Gillian Welch. Unwind and transport
yourself to another time and place with this sparse yet beautiful and
unhurried record.

Almost.........
Lucinda Williams - Essence
Bob Dylan - Love and theft

Tours of the Year (Should be gigs of the year, but I couldn't get that
down to 10, so I figured I'd class them by tour, to get more great shows
in! Shows I saw in brackets)

1. Ryan Adams solo - May (Sheffield/Manchester). I prefer (only
slightly) Ryans solo shows, and Sheffield is up there with Counting
Crows' Leeds 11/8/94 and Wiltern Theatre, 12/21/99 as the best show I
have ever seen.
2.Chris Mills & The Miserable Bastards/Hawksley Workman. - February
(Sheffield, Leeds, Manchester, Hull). 2 outstanding artists in their own
right, combining on this tour. Hawksley tearing the place up with his
unique stage presence, and Chris Mills - who puts so much into playing
his dark songs that you sometimes fear for his own safety. Catch either
of these artists if they play anywhere near you - you will not regret
it, but beware - you might die laughing!
3.Ryan Adams - November (London). Ryan solo opening for Ryan & Band. A
pretty great evening all round. Plus got to meet Jon and Matt, which in
itself rocked (in the truest Matt sense of the word)
4.Jayhawks/Eileen Rose - November (London). The Jayhawks never
disappoint me, either on record or live. Overcame dodgy sound early in
their set treat us to another classic show.
5.Ryan Adams - October (Manchester, Birmingham). Two more hugely
enjoyable shows.
6. Slobberbone/Trish Murphy (Sheffield only) - November (Sheffield,
Leicester, Nottingham). Those Slobberbone guys really are rock and roll,
with a country flavour. Fun, energetic and loud, with songs you can't
get out of your head. About as good a live band as you caould possibly
expect to see, and top blokes to boot. Trish Murphy gave a stellar
performance to open (and played a great headline show of her own in
Nottingham a few days later)
7. Chris Mills solo - June (Leeds, Manchester). Chris treated us to
accoustic workings of his songs, (and some of Hawksleys!) which allowed
him to show what a great voice he has, and how intense his songs really
are. My good friend, up and coming UK alt-country artist Matt Hill,
opened the Manchester show in fine style.
8. Pernice Brothers - September (Sheffield). Playing on September 13,
the band (who hail from Boston, and some of who live in New York) were
utterly bewildered by events, and confessed they were playing only
because they couldn't fly back home. They went on to produce a show of
awesome beauty - hard to describe - you felt so good to hear the songs,
but yet you felt so sad and numb. Which, ironically, is just the kind of
songs they are.
9.Jay Farrar/Peter Bruntnell - May (Manchester). Farrar returned to all
too small a crowd, but delivered none the less. And he spoke about 10
words to us ... we were blessed :). Opener Peter Bruntnell showed yet
again why he is quite possibly the best kept secret in Britain. He is
great!
10. Willard Grant Conspiracy - June (Manchester). More dark songs,
transporting you back in time, but of such quality, and when delivered
with a voice such as Robert Foster's you can't but be drawn to them.

Close:
Witness - October (Manchester)
Jolene - November (Sheffield)
Trish Murphy - November (Nottingham)

Songs of the year (on official releases):
1. "I would've married you" - Tim Easton
2. "7:30" - Pernice Brothers
3. "Don't Want to Know Why" - Whiskeytown
4. "Nobody Girl" - Ryan Adams
5. "Firecracker" - Ryan Adams
6. "Under A Sun" - Witness
7. "Mirror, Mirror" - Whiskeytown
8. "Flaming Wreck" - Pernice Brothers
9. "St Christopher" - Trish Murphy
10. "La Cienega Just Smiled" - Ryan Adams

Looking Forward to records and tours in 2002 from:
Counting Crows (obviously)
Ryan Adams' various projects
Caitlin Cary
Wilco (officially!)
Mike Daly (hopefully)
Slobberbone
Jayhawks (possibly)

Hehe...I'll have a go too...I probably wont be able to reduce it to an
order, and I'll keep posting to add on ones I've just remembered!

Albums.

=1. Jimmy Eat World - Bleed American: Simply fantastic, emotional, warm,
and even in it's saddest moments the music and melodies still lift you up so
much. Hearing this album was like 'BOOM', same impact as Boy Named Goo had
on me. The melody, vocals and harmonies and guitars border on orgasmically
perfect at times...I sincerely think that *everyone* should take a listen to
this album. Special mention for their Clarity album as well, darker,
cleaner, and just beautiful.

=1. Tool - Lateralus: Incredible, Mathmatical, Organic. This band are so
far above anyone else in the genre it's incredible...songwriting that
manages to be complex, adventurous, and unexpected without dissapearing up
it's own arse...twists and turns and takes you with it!

3.Ryan Adams - Gold: Only really got into it lately...as a result of this
ng mainly, and I still think there are a few duller tracks, but when that
guy puts together a simple melody and some chords the results are so good.
La Cienga, Harder Now That It's Over, When The Stars Go Blue are probably
faves.

4. Silver Ginger 5 - Black Leather Mojo UK version: Re-released, remastered
version of this great good ole fashioned glam / english rock album...given
todays music climate this is one of the only truely 'different' albums out
this year...and has a bonus CD that includes demos such as 'Last Bastard In
Heaven', and 'Walk Like A Motherfucker'...can you get more ROCK than that!

Also, Get Up Kids - Something to write home about, and Vertical Horizon -
Everything You Want....both came out last year, but I only got into them
this year...both great, the GUK one is brilliant.

Hmm...those really are the only albums this year where I like all the tracks
mostly...I'm sure there were more, I've bought shitloads this year...loads
of acoustic and slower stuff, but I can't remember.

Top Album Tracks - cos there are so many albums with a few genius songs on,
but arn't good enough to be top albums

1. Semisonic - El Matador: Pretty much one of my fave tracks of the
year...stunningly sparse and achingly melancholic for things gone
by...genius songwriting by drummer Jacob Slichter (sp?) The rest of the
album too is great...probably would be in the top list, but as great as some
songs are..they are very much semisonic by numbers, and this track makes the
rest look bad anyway!

2 Hundred Reasons - Remmus / I'll Find You...from Ep2 and Ep3 respectively,
the BEST new band in Britain bar none, both incredible tracks full of energy
and emotion and catchy as hell., and totaly individual...so much fun. You
US'ers should try these guys and find out what you are missing!

3. Placebo - Days Before You Came - from the lackluster (compared to the
extrodianry Without You I'm Nothing album) Black Market Music. This track
is Placebo my numbers, but it still rocks.

4. REM - I'll Take The Rain: Great song. Biggest album disapointment of the
year

5. Elevation - Endure Yourself: Beautiful, quite stunning track, perfect
use of instruments, keyboard parts that come and go...starts off sparse and
stays very calming, even during the last when these huge Neil Young guitars
come in low down in the mix to add some extra warmth. This band deserve to
be huge, Pete Vuckovic is one of the UK's best songwriters.

Gigs - To many to name!

So far above 1 it's incredible - Reading Festival - brilliant, and
experience that will stay with me for the rest of my life, I'm SO glad I
went

1. Ginger acoustic @ the barfly: 250 people, a set of great solo stuff,
then some great Wildhearts acoustic stuff, then to top it off...out come the
amps and the WH launch into a full electric set infront of 250 people! ACE,
and much better than the Forum gig earlier in the year.

2 . Marilyn Manson @ NEC. Great gig to start the year, right on the front
row...show was great, he is hugely entertaining and charasmatic.

=3. Alice Cooper @ Wembley. Great performance and stage show...plus BRIAN
MAY!!!!

=3. Ryan Adams @ Astoria. The best surprise of the year, and the second
best 'smaller' show of the year. Even with missing the end, the whole
experience of meeting people and hearing the songs played live - you were
all right, he is so much better live - both sets were great...really good
fun.

4. Rammstein @ Brixton Academy. Still coming down from this gig...quite
quite spectacular, I have NEVER EVER seen anything like it in my life. Pyro
technics every other song, face rigs that shoot flam from the mouth whilst
the band are still singing and playing...shooting flame to withing cm's of
each other faces, sodomising the keyboard player with a giant dildo that the
ejectulates all over the crowd, weraing a metal coat set on fire, and
finally sending the keyboard player out over the crowd in an inflatiable
dingy!! WOO HOO...and as always, the sound in Brixton is great, so the songs
sounded amazing and very powerful, plus, even with all the tight safty
regulations. they still managed to look good and not too rehearsed.

5...several bands in fifth place (although I think order has gone out the
window), Hundred Reasons who are amazing live, like 5 little dynamos
onstage..and very very nice people to. GTA, 5th time I've seen them, and
they get better and better live, interplay with the crowd, and just SO damn
cool. Plus. Bon Jovi @ Cardiff Stadium with MB20, a far far better show and
setlist that last years disapointing Crush tour, the stage set was like a
skyscraper balcony that they played on, a very different light show from
what they normally put on as well, but this was the closest I've come to
seeing them finally get that 'intimate' vibe in a huge venue. Jimmy Eat
World were also ace, but had only about 4 lights, and due to venue
restrictions played for only 70 mins. But their performance (both visually
and the songs themselves) was impeccable, the songs take on even more
emotion live, and Jim Adkins pours his heart into them, I've never seen
anyone get as involved with what he's playing as that guy. High hopes for
the Astoria show next year!

there it is,. in a year when rock music came back, but far far crapper than
it went away...some stuff still shines through

Fantastic! what a great idea martin...ok my turn! Bearing in mind, my
musical taste is far different from that of martin....but here's mine!

1. "Morning View" - Incubus. These guys are just fantastic. A fantisising
and mesmorising CD, featuring some of the coolest tunes this year, chilled
and edgy...all at the same time...simply amazing.
2. "Gold" - Ryan Adams. Just fantastic.....Ryan Adams was destined for big
things.
3. "Lateralus" - Tool. Words cannot describe this CD, it's dark, complex and
myserious (shit! I just used words to describe it! lol...oh well). Maynard
James Keenan has a gritty, low voice, perfect....awe inspiring.
4. "Closer" - Better Than Ezra. I love this band. 5 albums and not one wrong
foot. Good melodies, vocals, hooks and rhythms, BTE are definitely up there
with the Crows.
5. "Bleed American" - Jimmy Eat World. Their follow up to 1999's masterpeice
"Clarity", and what a job. This CD is perfect from start to finish, not one
bad song, and as for Emo going mainstream....they're your guys just yummy.
6. "Hoobastank" - Hoobastank. Supporting Incubus on their upcoming UK tour
excites me, but exciting me even more is the fact that this CD shows' that
these four LA natives are destined for big things....This, my friends, is
good ol' melodic rock. And the harmonies, oh god! the harmonies are just
orgasmic!
7. "Propeller" - Peter Stuart. Great CD from and even greater guy....he took
the time out to sign both the front and back of the inlay book AND the CD
itself, of my copy of the album. songs like "innocent" show that he can
write great tunes..... nuff said.
8. "Shangri-la-dee-da" - Stone Temple Pilots. Heading back to their "Core"
days, STP try to re-invent their original sound, and although they dont' do
it as well as they could, this album is still fantastic, and was constantly
in my CD player on holiday. (plus I got it free, coz the people in costco
didn't see it on top of the huge box of bedroom furniture :)
9. "V" - +LIVE+. I think I'm the only guy who actually likes this CD.....The
tracks are so damn catchy.....clever buggers are those +LIVE+ boys! "lookin'
at who, me? you better back up fool!"
10. "Places You've come To Fear the most" - Dashboard confessional.
EEEEMMMOOOO....great acoustic driven emo rock.....that's about all i have to
say about that :)

feel free to comment...

I got some great ideas of cds I need to pick up from you people. i am a
lurker by nature, but i love these posts ... so here is what i have been
listening to. To be totally honest, this year has been pretty bad. I
listen to mostly bootlegs and the live stuff people release (ben harper,
dave, counting crows, phish). but with this thread I have a couple more
bands to try.

Albums:
1. Ani DiFranco - Reveling / Reconing
2. Dashboard Confessional - the things ...
3. Ben Folds - rocking the suburbs
4. pete yorn - music for the morning after
5. ryan adams - gold
6. tori amos - strange little girls

honorable mentions
1. tool
2. bob

wild card (my guilty little fix)
1. pink - misunderstood
seriously unlike what I expected ... in a majorly good way.
2. new found glory

I have had a pretty shite year with CDs in terms of ones released this year:

Michael Jackson's Invincible is his worst album. Terrible production. What a
waste of the greatest soul/pop artist of the past twenty years. Did you know
one of the songs is written by SEVEN people?
DMB's Everyday, although a solid album, is a definite disappointment for me.
Ani Difranco's Revelling / Reckoning is not my kinda Ani.
Stereophonics, Just Enough Education To Perform. I bought this because of
the critics. Now I know why I do not listen to the critics!
Blink 182, Take Your Pants Off And Jacket. I bought this thinking it would
be a light, fluffy, enjoyable pop record. I was wrong.
Kings Of Convenience, Quiet Is The New Loud. Too much of the same. I do not
think I've even listened to it all the way through.
Semisonic's All About Chemistry. DO NOT LIKE!
Travis, The Invisible Band. Almost benign sound. Good pop, but that's not
why I bought it.
Heather Nova's South. Her worst album. What the fuck?!?!?

I though I was going to be for a great year of music, but it's one just full
of disappointments. Oh, and to top it all off, the charity song, What's
Going On? is arguably the worst charity song ever made.

But alas, three GOOD albums from this year are:
Turin Brakes The Optimist LP. I love this album.
Alicia Keys' Songs In A Minor. If she can keep her head above water, write
good songs (not about player hatin', "niggaz" and all that rubbish) then
Alicia Keys will be with us for a long time.
Springsteen's Live in NYC. What an album. This is how to rock. Still an
underappreciated artist in the UK.

I bought Ryan Adams' Gold for my sis. It's great. I will be getting Ben
Folds' Rockin The Suburbs, which I know will be wonderful. REM's Reveal is
one I think I will stay away from.

Really? I would say that this year's been pretty good musically. Better
than 2000, anyway.

My list of top albums:

3. Peter Stuart - "Propeller". I was nearly going to say "Gold", but then
I remembered this one, so Ryan Adams will have to sit on my list of
honorable mentions. I just think that this is a really great album -
strong the whole way through. My personal fave probably has to be the
(almost) title track - "Propeller Girl".

2. Ben Folds - "Rockin The Suburbs". What a good album! I was secretly
thinking that Ben would probably make a complete fool of himself and
release a truly bad album, after bf5 split, but from the first few
strangley syncopated chords of "Annie Waits" to the gorgeous end of "The
Luckiest" this album is amazing. And, although I know Judi doesn't really
like it, "The Ascent of Stan" is fantastic :)

1. Ed Harcourt - "Here Be Monsters". Such variety, such talent. Fave
tracks are "Apple of my Eye", "Hanging with the Wrong Crowd" and
"Shanghai".

Honorable Mentions:
Ryan Adams - "Gold"
Dave Matthews Band - "Everyday"
Jewel - "This Way"
Train - "Drops of Jupiter"
Semisonic - "Chemistry"

Top Gigs:

3. Neil Finn/Ed Harcourt at the Hammersmith Apollo
2. Train at Camden Dingwalls
1. Ed Harcourt/Ben & Jason/New Buffalo at the Shepherd's Bush Empire

Top 7 Albums/Ep's

1. John Mayer - Room For Squares

John Mayer is an acoustic guitarist (although he plays electric on
this album) from Atlanta, GA who's currently making waves in the USA.
This is his second album, and his major label debut, and it's a
classic. Best Track(s): Your Body is a Wonderland, My Stupid Mouth, No
Such Thing and St. Patricks Day

2. Rival Schools - United by Fate

Oh my God - forget The Strokes, the White Stripes and the Hives (ok,
well, don't forget them - the last two especially are really cool),
these guys are the saviours of Rock. Well, maybe that's going a little
too far, but y'know... This album is the best i've heard in a long
while. Best Track(s): Used for Glue, High Acetate.

3. Rival Schools United by Onlinedrawing (Split)

Take 2 former Emo/Hardcore superstars (Walter of Rival Schools -
formerly of Gorilla Biscuits, Quicksand and Youth of Today, and
Jonah/Onlinedrawing - formerly of Far), put them together with their
bands, let them record, and watch as they produce a really great
split. It's a little weird for a split CD - instead of any
Onlinedrawing solo tracks, Rival Schools back him up on 3 of the 6
tracks (the magnificent "Always", "Be Real" and "Where I'm From"),
while the other 3 are just Rival Schools. Well worth the £5.99 I spent
on it. Best Track(s): Always, Where I'm From.

4. Hundred Reasons - Ep's 2 and 3

British emotional hardcore, not unlike Rival Schools. Both these EP's
are amazing, and i'm REALLY kicking myself for not taping 100 Reasons
off Radio 1 when I recorded a Papa Roach show earlier this year. If
anyone has that show (100 Reasons, 16/04/01) I'd love to trade for it.
Best Track(s): Remmus (EP 2) and I'll Find You (EP 3)

5. Dashboard Confessional - The Places You Have Come to Fear the Most

Acoustic emo, as Jon Said. Gets a little like Dawsons Creek: The
Musical at times, but it's really great anyway. Best Track(s): Saints
and Sailors. I also like The Best Deceptions, and This Bitter Pill,
but I can't remember offhand if they're from this, or his other
release (The Swiss Army Romance).

6. Warped Tour 2001 Compilation

Needs no explaination, really. Some of best (and some of the worst)
punk and pop-punk bands contribute material that is, for the most
part, previously unreleased. Great CD. Best Track(s): The Ataris -
Looking Back on Today, New Found Glory - So Many Ways, Anti-Flag -
Zapatista, Don't Give Up, AFI - A Winters Tale, Tsunami Bomb - Take
the Reins.

7. New Found Glory - New Found Glory

Great pop punk album from South Florida's New Found Glory. It's all
songs about girls, school, and girls again. Best Track(s): Dressed to
Kill, Eyesore, Hit or Miss.

Top Album Tracks:

1. John Mayer - St Patricks Day
2. Hundred Reasons - I'll Find You
3. Hundred Reasons - Remmus
4. Jimmy Eat World - Bleed American
5. Fugazi - Full Disclosure
6. Radiohead - The Pyramid Song
7. Howie Day - She Says
8. Ryan Adams - New York, New York
9. Weezer - Hash Pipe
10. Blink 182 - Stay Together for the Kids

: 1. John Mayer - Room For Squares

:
: John Mayer is an acoustic guitarist (although he plays electric on

I still haven't listened to that boot you did for me :(....I really should I
have about 20 boots I still need to listen to!

I love how these guys are so popular in the UK...well not *so* popular...but
at least us cool people have heard of them :).....I've ordered EP's 1 and 2
from the internet, and awaiting their arrival at my door....I also managed
to pick up the Hundred Reasons/garrison split EP for £5 yesterday (did I
already mention this?). And Ian...I remember you telling me you didn't tape
the support band..that just sucks..but I didn't really have much interest
for them then either.

I will de-lurk for a moment to give my favourite cd's of the year:

1. Pete Yorn - musicforthemorningafter
Execellent singer/sogwriter, yet to be realeased in the UK but well worth
checking out. Favourite tracks: Murray, Strange Condition, On Your Side,
Sense.

2. Aimee Mann - Bachelor No 2
She's been mentioned here before and this Album is the best thing she's
done. FT: Backfire, Nothing is Good Enough, Fall of the Worlds Own Optimist,
How Am I Different.

3. Ryan Adams - Gold
I have this group to thank for owning this cd, its awesome. FT: La Cienga
Just Smiled, When the Stars go Blue, Wild Flowers, Harder Now that its over.

4. Ben Folds - Rockin the Suburbs
This isn't quite as good as the five, but my opinion may change over time.
FT: Annie Waits, Zak and Sara, Losing Lisa, Fired.

5. Flickerstick - Welcoming Home the Astronauts
A Goo Goo Dolls esque band that i first saw on the VH1 reality show, Bands
on the Run, which was the best reality tv show i had ever seen, keep your
eye out as VH-1 may show it again. FT: Smile, Coke, Beautiful.

A quick mention for a group i have never seen talked about on here, The Push
Stars. They do power-pop-rock (like the Lemonheads) and you can sit there
clicking your fingers along to their music all day long. Their album After
the Party (1999) is truly excellent. FT Everything Shines, Minnesota, Any
Little Town.

Best Gigs:

Only been to two this year, but they were both great:

1. Dave Matthews - Hanover Grand
My brother was lucky enough to snag some tickets on Virgin Radio, first time
seeing Dave and he was very impressive. The only dissapointment was that it
was originally supposed to be the whole band which would have been
incredible in such a small venue.

2. Ryan Adams - London Astoria
This has already been mentioned but it really was excellent, so big thanks
to this group, otherwise i wouldn't have been to that gig.

CD's i'm looking forward to:

CC (duh)
Sarah McLachlan
Elliott Smith
DMB (could be the lillywhite sessions)
Fiona Apple

I know what you mean about this album - it has some superb tracks on
it. I really love Disappear, Saturn Return, and I'll Take the Rain,
in particular, but most of it is very strong. I don't quite rate the
album as highly as their last two, but that's mainly because there are
a couple of tracks towards the end (Summer Turns to High and
Beachball) I could *really* do without. Still, even a slightly weaker
REM album is still excellent.

Amazing how varied everyone's musical tastes are around here. I
haven't even heard of half of these bands :-)

I agree with Toby and others raving about Ben Folds - Rockin' the
Suburbs. Not a duff track on the whole album. I can't decide if I
prefer this or Whatever and Ever Amen; this is poppier, but both have
that amazing blend of cynicism, honesty and humour.

No-one's yet mentioned Neil Finn - One Nil, which has also really
grown on me. Although Finn is regarded as one of those people who
write instantly likeable tunes, I've always found his songs take a
while to grow, and I think this is a great album (even if, as with
REM, I slightly prefer his last one.)

I also really rate Grant-Lee Phillips' solo album, Mobilize. This is
a different direction for him than Grant Lee Buffalo, but it has the
same quality as all the albums above, mixing pure pop tunefulness with
thoughtful lyrics. Apparently the European release will feature a
couple of new tracks (which is just bloody typical now that I've gone
and bought the US version. Grumble.)

Lastly - and I know it's not a new album - I finally got around to
trying DMB this year and Under the Table and Dreaming is a great
album. It didn't grab me immediately, but it's now living in my brain
and refusing to move out. <g>
