The Magnolia soundtrack is mostly Aimee Mann, some Supertramp as well...
They used her best songs for Magnolia (Wise Up, One, Save Me, etc.) I guess.
I looked for her on Audiogalaxy, but I couldn't find anything better than
that. I'm not so into female artists as well, except Tracy Chapman maybe...

Mann is a great artist. I own Whatever and I'm With Stupid (+ The Magnolia
soundtrack). Whatever is not bad but I really like I'm With Stupid. Loadsa
great songs.

Bachelor No.2 is supposed to be brilliant but I do not have it yet.

You know Jon, if I could only recommend one female artist in this world it
would be Heather Nova. I guarantee that if you invested in her second album,
Oyster, you would not turn back. The vocals are sublime, the lyrics are pure
poetry and boy can she rock. If you haven't heard one song from this album
tell me and I will upload a few live tracks onto my site this weekend.

The Magnolia ST is great, but Aimee's own albums are even better.
There's three of them: Whatever, I'm With Stupid, and Bachelor No. 2
(which contains many songs from Magnolia, but is still worth getting -
I have two different versions :)

If I was a more articulate man, I'd tell you exactly how wonderful
her music is. Alas, the way things are, you just have to believe me.
Rush out and buy them all!

i'm really sad that so many of you don't own any cds by female artists. that
seems so strange. i could never imagine that, and i think we like pretty
much the same kind of music. do you not buy them on purpose, or you honestly
just don't LIKE any music by any females?
have any of you ever heard of holly palmer? try that. :)
(i don't have any aimee mann; don't think i like her much.)

I've got quite a lot of music by women. One of the first bands I really
got into was The Bangles. I've got all their albums and was really happy
to hear they re-united. I'm looking forward to their forthcoming album,
but I somehow doubt it will be as good as what they did in the eighties.

Two great british girl bands are the welsh punk band Kenickie (sadly now
defunct, although I hear that Lauren Laverne is doing some solo work) -
although their drummer was male ('Johnny X' he called himself, although
I believe he was Lauren's brother) and Alisha's Attic who... well are
pretty difficult to describe. Their first album was their best, although
their second had its strong points.

I'm a big Jewel fan and am looking forward to her upcoming release. I've
got Dido's album, but I don't like it very much - my girlfriend likes it
more. I bought it after having only heard Dido playing an acoustic
session on the radio. She was great, but I think the album's very
over-produced and too 'dancy.' She's great live though.

One pretty under appreciated female artist is Beth Orton, who was
basically Dido before Dido was Dido... although she's a bit more folky
and a bit more 'out there.'

I loved Alanis Morisette's first album, although I lost it :( I would
buy a new copy, but I think I've grown out of that sort of music.

I don't purposely avoid buying CDs by female artists...I just don't think
I've ever got into that kind of music...maybe I haven't given it enough
chance....but like, I LOVED alanis Morisette's 1st Cd..it was like one of my
all time faves...till my sister lost it :( Um..I've heard a few Jewel songs
and she's *ok*....lol I think that's it....ALL of the CDs I've purchased are
by male artists...that seems weird..i'm gonna try a few of these crazy cats
out though...see if I like them...but I'm more partial to the "rockier" side
of music these days......and the impression I have is that most female
artists (solo) are more on the soft rock side of things)....it's only bands
like Kittie and L7 who are like metal women :)

I heard that Melissa Ethridge (i think it was her any hoo) did a brilliant
cover of Born to Run at the concert for NYC the other day......was it good?

well I'll try some out

Judi has a point - there are a lot of great female artists out there,
and there will surely be some that fit your tastes, whatever they may
be.
Just this last 12 months or so, I have purchased records by Caitlin
Cary, Lucinda Williams, Gillian Welch, Eileen Rose, and Emmylou Harris.
Welch's record will likely be in my top ten for the year.
Looking forward to Jewels new record and Sheryl Crows new record as
well.

There is a lot of great music out there, both by male artists and female
artists - it's just that a lot of it never gets any publicity and
therefore most people never hear of it.

Not very many female artists appeal to me. I don't think it's because
they are female, though. I'm not sure why it is.

and my guilty pleasure is the dixie chicks. i am not a fan of country but i
LOVE the dixie chicks. (p.s. for the record, i LOATHE jewel. i'm not much a
fan of women who are 'soft' or folky stuff. oh, nancy griffith is ok, at

I do think that there are a lot of female singer-songwriters with a
familiar sound (which is also true of male singer-songwriters) but
there are many who are very different.

I like Heather Nova, and really like Suzanne Vega. Used to like Tori
Amos too but I'm not so keen on her recent stuff.

Tracy Chapman is cool, although I've only got the first two albums.

Sheryl Crow's good (she's on a couple of tracks on the new Neil Finn
album BTW).

Unlike Toby I think Dido's album is great. Very "dance" music but
accompanying very "songwritery" tracks. It all gels nicely for me.

I adored Torn by Natalie Imbruglia but somehow I never got round to
buying her album.

I am both a Springsteen fan and a Melissa fan.
When she started talking about heroes and then about who her hero was, I
knew a Springsteen song was coming up. She's covered Thunder Road
before so I was kind of expecting that. Her acoustic version of Born to
Run was quite good. She got down every chord, every nuance in the
original song, on her 12-string guitar.

MSG had problems with her mike at the start of her set ("Come to my
Window"). It completely cut out on her after the first verse and she
kept going up to the mike to sing and nothing came out. It seemed like
the audience kicked in the rest for a while which was cool to see and
hear. Eventually, it came back on and she had forgotten at what point
in the song she was at.

Btw, I like a good number of female artists: Indigo Girls, Melissa,
Tracy Chapman and Aimee Mann. The Magnolia soundtrack is a great album.

Cheers,

been de-moted to becoming a back-up singer for U2....not that it's a bad
thing to do that..but she used to be good.

Whoa...wouldn't pin you as a Kenickie (sp?) fan!!

I agree that Beth Orton is far far better than Dido...more original, and
more character to her voice.

Also, to add my 2p to the female singers thing...as well as the ones already
mentioned, my collection also includes, Paula Cole, Sarah McLauchlin (sp?),
Shawn Colvin and lots of Cyndi Lauper :)

As for Alanis...her Unplugged album is one of the BEST I have heard from
that series, quite stunning, songs all reworked, and the new ones one there
are brilliant...no Pressure Over Cappuchino being a fave...plus her quite
beautiful cover of a Sting song (I for get the title, cos I've lost the
inlay for the album!)...and her 2nd album always grows on me the more I
listen to it....The Couch esp is phenominal songwriting. Although a lot of
2nd album stuff is better on the Unplugged CD

Matt - please excuse the SHITE spelling in this post...I'm very tired!

not heard the new one, but Smoke really was terrific...the whole album was
good, but she wore her influences on her sleeve and you can tell that a lot
of the songs are in a certain style...Delores from Cranberries, some Annie
Lennox etc

Oh...mention for Annie, can't believe no one has mentioned her...shes GREAT!
And Delores has one of the most instantly identifiable voices
around...Zombie is one of the classic songs of all time...not heard their
new album though.

"magnolia-ish" is the sound of producer Jon Brion

he's produced all or parts of the following CD's

Aimee Mann- Batchelor No. 2
Fiona Apple- Tidal
Fiona Apple- When The Pawn
Fiona Apple- Decadent Weight (tentative title, due on epic in January)
Jon Brion- Meaningless
Magnolia soundtrack
EELS- Beautiful Freek
EELS- Electro-Shock Blues

he's also done writing and demo production with Glen Phillips, formerly of toad
the wet sprocket, for Glen's next CD, he's worked on some Dishwalla material
for an upcoming soundtrack (following the release of their new CD "Opaline")

all of his work rocks
his "Meaningless" cd can be bought only on his site, jonbrion.com

it's worth the money
it's one hell of a great album

the new Natalie CD is far superior in my mind to the old stuff, plus, she
didn't even write "Torn", it was c over of an ednaswap song

her new stuff is killer, it's not pop and radio friendly, it's her true sound,
very creepy and dark at points, I'm hooked

reminds me of her work on the Stigmatta soundtrack

I don't think I've heard those, but I have heard "Between The Two",
"Here Right Now", "Ride the Ride" and "Stealing Rosemary". I think
they're all good, but still lacking a certain something. For example,
"Ride The Ride" is a great guitar tune, but is lacking in the lyrics.
Hopefully, they'll have improved them by the time they're done in the
studio.
