I'm pursuing my long standing desire to own a "German" system clarinet, now
that they occasionally show up on eBay. In order to help me here, I'm trying to
find out some background information on the brands.

Could anyone with experience in this area rate (on a scale of 1-10, ten being
best) the following brands of horns? And, feel free to add any other brands and
models with which you have knowledge beyond those presented.

Brands:

Moening Brothers
Kielerworth (sp?) (the saxophone people, I believe; never could spell
that one right)
Wurlitzer

In the professional orchestras in The Netherlands only (Herbert) Wurlitzer
is being used and I think they are the best German clarinets.

Actually, Richard Kielwerth (son/brother to Julius? anyone know?) or a company
with his name makes flutes, saxes, and clarinets. They make both Boehm and
German systems.

I don't know whether Wurlitzer are the best or not but today they build
good horns like many others in Germany by example
Rolf Meinel he get's two times (in 1992 + in 2000) the german
musicinstrumentaward for B-Klarinette Solistmodell!
(Deutscher Musikinstrumentenpreis 1992 und 2000 für B-Klarinette
Solistenmodell)
-Meinel, Uebel, Wurlitzer, Schreiber, Keilwerth..., Gerold - AT,
Belcanta - FR/CZ/DE, many many others...

Erich

Just for curiosity's sake, do German jazz clarinetists play these systems? Or do
they exist solely to serve the needs of a classical school?

Hi
I've done some research on German clarinets before. Some URLs to web sites
are shown below
Some manufacturers:
http://www.f-arthur-uebel.de/index.html
http://www.schwenk-und-seggelke.de/englisch/index.html
Yamaha German Clarinets (see bottom of page)
http://www.yamaha-europe.com/english/438.html
http://www.oe-net.com/hammerschmidt/
http://www.wurlitzerklarinetten.de/

The "German" system that show up in www.ebay.com are probably Albert
systems. Searching for "klarinette" in www.ebay.de will show up german
clarinets. Information on Wurtilizer clarinets can be found in
http://holz.fureai.or.jp/catalogue/Cla_Wurlitzer.html

Anyway, why do you desire for a german clarinet?

Hello everybody,
as a prof german clarinetist,
i would recommend Herbert Wurlitzer, Leitner&Kraus, Harald Hüyng, Schwenk
und Seggelke only for professional uses,
because they are very expensive. But i think you will not find them at
ebay...
As a teacher, i recommend Schreiber, Yamaha, newer A.Übel, Clemens
Wurlitzer. This is also my personal rating, but it also depends on the
condition of the instrument.
Greetings, and good luck
Christoph
