Maureen, my thoughts are with you right now. Thanks for the info, as I
had been unable to get anything until your post.

Can anyone explain why things like this happen?? What a loss.

As some may already know, Michael Hutchense, lead singer of INXS, was found
dead in his hotel room outside of Sidney, Australia. The cause of death at
this time is unknown but if anyone knows any details would you please share
them with the group.

Outside of CT, in the 80's INXS was the band to follow into the 90's. Their
recent "comeback" album spawned some sales and a decent hit on the radio
around the same time "CT '97" was released. I felt if INXS could get
airplay, CT could as well. Michael had a great voice and will surely be
missed. I'm hoping his death wasn't related to drugs or foulplay as most
rock-n-rollers have been and I'm thankful this type of bad news hasn't hit
our favorite group, CT.

Does anyone have any good INXS or Michael Hutchense stories to share?

He was found hung against the doorknob of his hotel room at the Ritz
Carlton Hotel in Sydney. He was alone at the time. It happened around
midday Saturday (our time in Australia). Paula Yates, his girlfriend, is
currently on a flight to Australia.

Prescription drugs were found at the scene of the suicide. It was no
secret tho, that Michael was heavily into drug use.

I used to know some of the guys in INXS quite well in the early 80s, but
don't feel like discussing it now for obvious reasons.

Just last night (and I shit you not) for some reason INXS popped into my

career and things....
Usually I never think of them, though I do like a few of their tracks...
Yowza, I wonder what happened??? They weren't doing too bad, where they?

What a tragic loss! :( My heart goes out to Maureen and all other INXS fans,
friends and family. I actually saw INXS and Cheap Trick at Alpine Valley back
in the 80's.......... INXS, Cheap Trick and Ziggy Marley on one bill........
Michael was a great singer and incredible showman. He will be missed! :*(

This from The Australian online newspaper.......

23nov97

Rock star Michael Hutchence was yesterday found dead in lavish quarters in
suite 524 at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Double Bay.

Shortly before midday hotel staff found Hutchence dead in the room he had been
staying in.

More reports Police said yesterday a leather belt and prescribed medications
were found in the suite, although investigators refused to confirm the body was
that of Hutchence.

They would only say an Australian who resided in England was found dead on the
hotel's fifth floor and the coroner would identify the body tomorrow.

A post mortem will be carried out tomorrow.

Inspector Christopher Hogg said: "Detectives have taken into possession a
leather belt for scientific examination. It would appear there are no
suspicious circumstances."

Asked if there was a note left at the scene, Inspector Hogg said that would be
a matter for the Coroner to release.

But in England, Hutchence's companion Paula Yates was devastated at the news.

Her lawyer, Anthony Burton, told reporters outside her Chelsea home of her
grief.

"She is devastated and is trying to absorb the enormity of the news," he said.

"She is inside with three children and wants to be left to her grief."

A fourth child - believed to be Fifi Trixibelle - was with her father, Bob
Geldof, who lives in the English countryside.

Mr Burton also confirmed lawyers for Yates and Hutchence had been "in
discussions," but gave no further details.

Arrangements for her to leave for Sydney were "still being looked at," he
added.

Mr Burton declined to comment on reports that a legal battle between Geldof and
Hutchence was pending, and that it may have involved drugs found in Hutchence's
London home last September.

It is understood a friend broke the news to Ms Yates around 3:30am London time
(2:30pm Sydney time) – about two and a half hours after Hutchence's body was
found in the Double Bay hotel room.

Friends said last night the singer had apparently been depressed for some time.

But he dined on Friday night with his parents at an Indian restaurant in
Edgecliff.

The Australian rock star and lead singer of the band INXS was just about to
begin the group's national tour.

The band had been rehearsing at the ABC studios at Gore Hill for several days
for the Elegantly Wasted tour and had rehearsed only yesterday morning. The
band was waiting for him.

The coroner arrived at the hotel just after 2pm and removed the body an hour
later.

Police forensics experts were in Hutchence's suite on the hotel's top floor.

A cleaner's register on the floor simply said "VIP" about the occupant of the
room.

Hutchence was born in Sydney on January 21, 1960, to Kelland, a salesman, and
Patricia, a model and make-up artist.

Michael's early life was spent travelling around the world, living between
Sydney, Hong Kong and Los Angeles with his flamboyant parents.

Michael was educated at the King George V school, an establishment for British
expatriates.

When Michael was 12 his parents moved back to suburban Sydney, settling at
Belrose on the north shore and sending their children to Killarney Heights High
School.

At that time Michael and his friends formed his first group, a "little folk
band" with which he would sing Peter, Paul and Mary songs.

He met Andrew Farriss – now chief songwriter and keyboardist with INXS – on the
same day, when he pulled him out of a fight started by a group of sixth
formers.

He moved to Perth when he was 17 and later teamed up with bass player Gary
Beers, guitarist Tim Farriss, drummer Jon Farriss and saxophonist Kirk
Pengilly.

Michael died exactly two months before his 38th birthday.

Although a millionaire from the band's past successes, friends said he would
have loved to have had Jagger's success and fame.

According to friends, Hutchence had been depressed because the band's last
album had not been a critical success and he was concerned about the Australian
tour.

But he had seemed in good spirits when he arrived here early last week. and was
later seen having dinner with a pretty girl in Moran's restaurant in Potts
Point. The chef/owner Matthew Moran is a good friend of fellow INXS member
Pengilly.

Freelance photographer Jon Lindsay, who was attending a Life Education ball at
the Ritz-Carlton on Friday night, ran into Michael Hutchence walking across the
lobby.

"He was alone and seemed in reasonably good spirits," said Lindsay.

"He asked me whether it was a good party and I asked him whether it was true
that he was thinking about living here. He just smiled and shrugged his
shoulders. "Well, it's a nice place," he responded.

Last month it had also been reported that Hutchence was due to secretly marry
Paula Yates in the South Pacific island of Bora Bora in January, around the
time of his birthday.

Despite the fact that his father, Kel Hutchence, denied this was true, INXS
member Kirk Pengilly, said that it would be just the sort of thing that
Hutchence and Yates would do.

Certainly when it came to women, Hutchence lived up to his reputation as one of
the hottest men in the world. Before Yates, he was involved with super- model,
Helena Christensen for a number of years and many insiders believed he would
marry her.

He also dated Kylie Minogue, who told many friends that he had changed her
forever from her almost chaste image to a true rock and roller.

Drugs. Lack of reality. Lack of coping skills. Lack of ego. Lack of good
parents....who knows? There are a million and one potential reasons but the use
of drugs is just a symptom of a much deeper underlying problem.

Damn....well, I thought the guy had a cool voice. I hadn't heard anything about

Just wanted to kick in my 2 cents. 1984 for a great year for me for a lot of
reasons. Anyway, I went to a Billy Idol concert that summer in Chicagoland and
saw some great warm up band I'd never heard of before. It was INXS and I was a
fan from that point on, buying most of their records. Drugs are a horrible
thing but drugs/suicide the worst. The sad part about it is, even though
people like him are highly visible, and can afford it, it seems like they don't
seek treatment, or if they do get treatment they don't pay attention. It makes
it really hard on the people around them. And I guess it's even harder because
so-called fans are always waving stuff in their face. Anyway... May he rest in
peace. And a prayer for his family.

I read in the paper the other day that authorities think he might have
accidentally hung himself. They're calling it a possible death through "sexual
misadventure". If this is at all true I can only say, "Jeez what an
embarassingly stupid way to go". Even worse than Elvis on the john.

I just heard on the radio that he was masturbating and doing the ol'
auto-asphixiation thing trying to get a bigger orgasm.

If this is true....well.... I am sure we all can collectively roll our eyes and
shake our head.

In his wake, a newborn daughter and a woman that loved him. I gotta admit, I'm
as big a fan of orgasms as anyone else, but when I start thinking I gotta
suffocate myself to make them better, someone needs to sit me down and have a
talk with me...

Sad if it's true...

Any chance he was murdered? Does Geldof have an alibi? I know that may sound

Well, Maureen may know more on this one, but from what I've found out
**Supposedly** he was on the phone with St. Bob (who was in England) at
some point before he died. Geldolf didn't want his children to travel
to Oz for the holidays or something, I'll be the first to say I don't

Regardless, I don't think he was murdered, I just think it was one of

Y'know, I have to admit, when I first heard about it, I immediately thought
about the possibility of auto-erotic asphxiation....believe it or not, it
is more common than you can imagine...I didn't know him, obviously, so I
can say for sure, but I can see that being the case over suicide...I mean,
the guy had a 10-12something month old kid, didn't he? His girlfreind was
over-seas, wasn't she?
And I, for one, see masterbation as nothing to be ashamed about, whatever
it's form....a LOT less than commiting suicide, anyway...
But please, let's not go on debating something we may never know for
sure....

Let the debate begin...

1st of all I could see how someone would try to make a joke, in order to try to
avoid the pain of dealing with the loss of life. At the same time I could see
how somebody would be offended by that, given that it is a human life. It's a
matter of personal taste. It also depends, probably, on how much you liked or
didn't like his music and what you thought about him as a person. I didn't
know much about him at all other than, he was an interesting singer with a cool
style.

I think after some time passes, you will probably see a journalist or two try
to interview his close friends and family and maybe write a book. If he truly
was suicidal, there would have been lots of signs, changes in behavior, things
he said, maybe even doctor visits, drug abuse, or prescription meds. It's not
something that just happens overnight. There could even be something like a
history of suicide in the family, again I don't think any of us know that now
though. It would take a lot of investigative work. Then again, if they
interviewed a former girlfriend or two and they said he was into the choking
thing, that may provide the clues right there. In any event, until you have
facts and until people close to him are willing to talk, it's all speculation
at this point. And even once the facts are all collected, it still could be a
mystery. Look at all the books and articles written about Marilyn Monroe,
Elvis, etc.

Oh duh... I forgot the most telling evidence... if the body was found with his

don't know if the police or his family would release that info. I'm just
speculating. I apologize if this offends anybody.

Well you are our unoffical Sherlock Holmes.

BTW..I know this has absolutely nothing to do with CT and I really don't care
myself, but my daughter wanted confirmation. She heard Marilyn Manson had
OD'ed...true, not true????

I can only hope it's L.A.! Would be just like old times... They played
several years in a row here in the late 70's/early 80's. I haven't heard
anything though...

Aloha from the Honolulu Lurker,

Here's the scoop, our local rock station KPOI began running contest
commercials this morning with the prize being a trip to SAN FRANCISCO to
see CHEAP TRICK at the HARD ROCK CAFE on NEW YEARS EVE.

You lucky buggahs in the Bay area!

Yes - the above is correct. They have a new disc due in February called
Van Halen III. Clever huh?

Thanks for your post Jeff. I am a lucky buggah in the Bay area! This is
indeed a very cool Christmas present! I just called the Hard Rock and they said
there are no tickets, it's a free show, first come first served.

What's up with that radio station KPOI? They sound pretty cool. Are they
playing any Cheap Trick (besides Budokan era I mean, like CT '97)?

This would make sense, since Trick has done this about 2 times in the
past 5 (?) years. They usually do New Years at the Ventura Theater in
Ventura CA.

Free tickets, First Come First Serve, on New Year Eve none the less? So
what hour of the morning do you think you will have to get up to get a
"free" ticket to this thing!!! I am bummed, I would have gladly PAID (A
LOT) to see them on New Years ANYWHERE, but now it will be full of Teeny
Boppers who don't know Cheap Trick from The Spice Girls, that want to be
there just cause it is free and it is televised.(long heaving sigh...)

I'm laughing my ass off every morning as the morning dj/pd Brock Whaley
(who has dissed CT on the air several times in the past) has to promote
this contest time after time. Nope KPOI isn't playing CT97, but maybe
I'll be hearing some since the station has a history of playing the bands
who's shows they are promoting or tying a contest to. I did hear "She's
Tight" one night a few weeks ago though...hope springs eternal.

And here's a sick pupu line just for you Bun:

"If your (butt) is a Chinese restaurant, then I'll have the Pupu platter"
The Bloodhound Gang-"I Just Wanna Be Queer, So I Can Get Chicks"

Sorry in advance to anyone who choked on that one :)

The Bloodhound Gang's One Fierce Beer Coaster is a great album. I
laugh my ass off listening to it. Consequently, I had to re-attach it
with velcro. There are too many great quotes on that album and I
don't want to offend the alt.music.cheap-trick family.

My position is still the same - but my *real* ISP seems to be having news group

Yeah, well, what can I say? At the moment the AOL news server is more
reliable than the one at my *real* ISP. Everything has a purpose it
