Okay, so I have the album & I've only listened to about 2 songs but
mostly I'm intrigued by the coy presskit references to the old North
State but without any details as to who the heck these persons/peoples
actually are & where exactly they're from.

I know one of you has seen them. So what's the scoop?

Well, Kingsbury Manx actually do live in Chapel Hill, and aside from a
couple of shows at the Cave, I don't think they've played around town very
much. They've got an old upright Kingsbury piano in their basement and a
cat with no tail (hence the name). Guitar player Ryan Richardson is an
amiable sort who used to work at Millenium Music in Wilmington and then in
Durham. He's got impeccable musical taste - or at least musical taste
similar enough to my own that it seems impeccable to me [you know, Yo La
Tengo, Beach Boys, Home, Palace], Knowing his musical tastes, but not
realizing he was in the band, I recommended he buy the Kingsbury manx CD
last week. There are a few other guys in the band Kenneth and Scott and one
other guy whose name I do not know.

Ross, Do you find their record as absolutely beautiful (and dreamy and
spacey) as I do?

This is quite possibly the finest production effort ever from Mr. Jerry Key.

The Kingsbury Manx are great. I've seen them at the Cave and at King's
and just got the CD, which is excellent. To me they sound kind of like
Bedhead with more hooks. They'll be playing with The Mayflies USA
(obligatory disclaimer: I'm one o' the Mayflies...) at Humble Pie next
Friday 1/28. I highly advise checking them out tomorrow at CD Alley @ 6
and/or on Friday in Raleigh. I dare say the Kingsbury Manx are the best
new band in a town full of great bands. Big Tar Heel fans, too.

I was finally able to get it out of their press person that three of them
moved here from Wilson, N.C., apparently to go to college. I can't tell if
they're being deliberately secretive or not.
So much for the idea that only metal comes from Wilson.

they've got a press person?!?

anyway, they weren't so deliberately secretive saturday. or, it's no

secret anymore that they're great. they use very primitive open tunings

to make slowly building, slightly psych, and atmospheric pop, kind of

like a more upbeat low. they are very young. they often sing three part

harmonies. they have a farfisa, two epiphone sg's, and a drummer who

prefers brushes even for his crescendos. two thumbs up. cd alley listed

the k manx cd on a chalk board that said "coming soon," else i would

have looked for it. now i either have to make a trip back to chapel hill

or hope millennium has it.

james reardon from rodeo boy performed some of the sweetest

singer-with-his-guitar stuff i've seen in i don't know how long. i hope

he records the stuff i heard him play.

i missed all the other acts.

cd alley has more stuff i want to buy than i have money. i got the first

rainer maria cd and a flying saucer attack/roy montgomery cd for $17

total. rossi scooped me on a shadows of knight reissue for cheap. it

looks like they will fill the void left by poindexter, and then some.

rah.

i enjoyed seeing k. manx and james reardon at cd alley, although there's

even less space there in which to see bands than when two way pull was

in that location. i think it's funny, though, the way people stand all

the way in the 'back' blocking the entrance, and then act like it's some

major imposition when someone wants to walk in the door, even though

there's plenty of room up 'front' where the music was. the look on some

woman's face just said, "who are you and can't you see i'm leaning

against this door, so please come back later?" someday i will get purple

hair and a couple of nose rings and then doors will open for me. anyway,

i especially liked being able to see bands at a civilized hour. that was

a big help. thank you.

personally, i can't wait to check them out.
think i'll try to make the King's show.
(lazy, reclusive me, i haven't been to King's yet)

i know that howard at all city/thrill jockey loved them from the first demo.
he called back in the Fall to see what i thought/knew of them.
i was at a loss. which isn't unusual.

so, i'm excited to hear the cd.

dig the new breed.

i promise that i won't hold that against them.

One more reason to like Kingsbury manx. You gotta love a band that wears
their ACC basketball preferences on their sleeve. Somebody's gotta pick up
the Indie-rock Tar Heel connection now that Polvo's gone. Are there any
professed Duke fans out there amongst the Triangle Indie-Rock Performers
Union? My guess is that there's a distinct Tar Heel WolfPack contingent,
but no Blue Devils amongst the rockers.

You would have to go back to Blue Chair's "Where I Hunt Mine Enemy" and
their sports anthem "Blue Devil" to find something really compelling from a
Dukey (but this is both from a member of BC and a TarHeel, so caveat
emptor).
