Holy Roman Empire, Seana Carmody, Emily Sparks
Go! Studios Rm. 4, Carrboro
The pope emailed like so:
This is to invite you all to come on out Wednesday 9/18 to Go! Room 4 to see the Holy Roman Empire who will be opening for Seana Carmody and Emily Sparks.
For those of you who haven't seen us, I'd say we're in that Galaxy 500, Yo La Tango, Luna vain - we also have a harmonium and we'll let you play with it if you are really, really good. Our latest transmutation includes the drum stylings of Jason Klarl. Watch us evolve before your very eyes.
[http://www.kimcheerecords.com/bands/seanacarmody/] Seana Carmody is "known as the sweet vocal center of the experimental noise-pop Swirlies in their early '90s heyday on the Taang! label."
[http://www.wishingtreerecords.com/artists/emily_sparks.html] Emily Sparks "composes simple melodies which alternate between sad sparseness and pure pop-ness."

Brown Mountain Lights
The Cave, Chapel Hill
Brown Mountain Lights is the country band of longtime Triangle popster (and for the past many years, folk/country-ster) Jeff Hart. I seem to remember being told that this show is being recorded, so wear your loud clothes.
Thursday, September 19
Glory Fountain, The Rosebuds
Local 506, Chapel Hill
The Rosebuds are from Raleigh; they're a three-piece with ex-Ashley Stove drummer Billy Alphin & a couple of folks from Wilmington. They make beautiful breezy 60s-style britpop that reminds me of Belle & Sebastian one minute & the Kinks the next. Their debut EP, "The Rosebuds Make Out," is in my top 10 of 2002 for sure.
Glory Fountain have been around for ages, but if you haven't been paying attention you may have missed them, due to their habit of taking years off at a time. They're currently active, with a new CD and the same old gorgeous harmonies from Lynn Blakey and John Chumbris.
Thursday, September 19
Three Torches, Dom Casual
Ringside, Durham
The Durham bar/PA weirdness bug has apparently spread over to Ringside, where the loaner PA may or may not have been revoked (they've apparently been borrowing it for ages & thus didn't get around to getting one of their own). I'm told that PA has been secured by the bands for this show but anything beyond that is beyond me.
Dom Casual make goofy 60s-style garage-surf-Kinks-rock, complete (sometimes) with matching turtlenecks. They've got a ton of really weird stories, too. Three Torches are one of the few bands brave enough (around here, at least) to attempt a sort of heavily atmospheric, reverb-drenched Tom Waits kind of theatrical vibe.

Utah!, re:rec, Ryan Pound
Duke Coffeehouse, Durham
Utah! are Raleigh folks who moved here from Michigan (smart!); re:rec are their labelmates on Arborvitae, and I believe they too are from Michigan, though they apparently haven't yet moved someplace warmer. Touring is a good start, though. Despite owning split 7"s (on Raleigh's Pidgeon English records) featuring both Utah! and Ryan Pound, I can't tell you what they sound like, because the only turntable in the house is on the stereo with the blown speakers and I can't stand listening to it.

The Comas, Player Piano, +/-
Go! Studios Rm. 4, Carrboro
It has been so long since I've seen the Comas that I don't think I could name a single member besides Andy Herod. I think that means I'd be better off not trying to synopsize them, either. The club listing tells me that +/- are a Versus side project but I dunno any more than that.
Saturday - Monday or Tuesday will follow sometime later in Part 2.

9:45pm - SCRATCH (75 min) dir: Doug Pray
Documentary history of turntable scratching
Highlighting Durham's HHFF is the North Carolina premiere of
SCRATCH, a feature-length documentary film that
explores the world of the hip-hop DJ. From the birth
of hip-hop, when pioneering DJ's began extending
breaks on their party records (which helped inspire
break dancing and rap), to the invention of scratching
and "beat-juggling" vinyl, to its recent explosion as
a musical movement called "turntablism," it's a story
of unknown underdogs and serious virtuosos who are
radically changing the way we hear, play and create
music. SCRATCH had its world premiere at the Sundance
Film Festival and has been nominated for a 2002
Independent Spirit Award by the IFP. It's now playing
in select theaters throughout the United States to critical acclaim.
"SCRATCH is a remarkable triumph on virtually every
level. Not for hip-hoppers only, this is the sort of
film that leaves you feeling uplifted, funky, and
ready for more." The Austin Chronicle.

dammit! i missed this.
lumpy, we work in the same office.
think you could try to remember to tell me when your
band is playing every once in a while?

+/- are indeed a Versus sideproject...or at least they
are band that contains two members who also play in
Versus...the jury is still out as to whether Versus is
still a band, which i guess would affect whether they
could have "side projects".
Jimmy Baluyut (the "other Baluyut"; boy would he ever
kill me if he read that) and Pat Ramos are the two
members of which we speak. there are also, at last
count, two other members in +/- who may or may not be
in other bands as well. i honestly can't remember.
all that being said, i don't really think that +/-
sounds anything like Versus at all. its has more of
an electronic-downtempo-organic-acoustic feel...at
least that's what i remember about their debut record
(available on Teenbeat). i really liked it a lot.
definitely looking forward to checking them out live.
i saw the refurbished Comas a while back at 506.
they very well may have been refurbished even more
since then. i remember thinking at that show that it
seemed as if andy had just gotten back from rock
school, where he apparently graduated with honors.
less mid tempo noodles, and more chunky guitar rifts.
who knows what friday holds in store. looking forward
to finding out though.
