Just saw the last post was 2018. Is this listserv dead? Are there any
new ones that have replaced it?

Best,
-Dave

Not dead!

Is COVID-19 going to be the thing that resurrects ch-scene??

Face-to-face socialization: OVER

Social media: TOO STRESSFUL

Clearly the time for old-fashioned text-only listservs is NOW.

BTW, that reminds me: No images, no attachments. Post a link if you want!

So, what's good, fam? There is a new Hiss Golden Messenger live album out today: https://hissgoldenmessenger.bandcamp.com/album/forward-children-a-fundraiser-for-durham-public-schools-students

Haven't had time to listen to this yet, but it was recorded by my buddy Luc, and the money goes to the Durham Public Schools Foundation.

OK, listening to the new Hiss Golden Messenger.

Pros: Sounds amazing
Cons: MC's latter-day "gnomic unintelligible muttering" singing style is still in full force
Wild-card: There is a literal "Shakedown Street" quote in "Call Him Daylight." Do with this information what you will.

Welp, today I learned that newsguy.com still exists and is still maintaining its listserv <-> usenet gateway. I configured that, what, 20 years ago?

What Matt (and I) is/are referring to is the fact that since ~1994 ch-scene has been mirrored, badly, to alt.music.chapel-hill, which is a thing called a Usenet group. You can go read the wikipedia article about that if you want to.

For a while after The Web became a thing, there was this company called Dejanews that provided access to Usenet groups on the web, and had a pretty comprehensive archive. At some point Google bought them and folded them into Google Groups, which is why this page exists: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/alt.music.chapel-hill

It is absolutely fitting that some posts from this mailing list don't seem to transit over to the newsgroup because IT WAS ALWAYS THUS even though there was never any good reason for it.

As long as Mayor McKriple lives, this listserv isn't dead.
