I also really dislike them. I don't mind the music, but the lead singer
sounds like a sheep. I can't get over how much I really hate the sound of
his voice!

Geez! I quoted the exact same line to someone three days ago about the
Hip. I probably wouldn't dislike them quite as much as I do if their
fans weren't quite so obnoxious.

They're referring to Consolidated.

You know what? I *USED* to be like you, I just couldn't stand the Hip
and especially Gord Downey, he was ok to listen to once in a while, but
I just COULD NOT watch him!
BUT, I'm a convert now, I like them lots. I'm not an obnoxious fan
though, and I know that for sure. I didn't follow them down to Seattle
and Oregon (unlike one of my friends), I don't quote them over and over,
and "sweat pants, jeans with no pockets, big hair" doesn't describe me!
I respect your views, but hey, it could happen to you. Who woulda
thought that *I'd* be sticking up for the Hip???

I do. First of all, I'm not a fan of the group, I'm just not into their
kind of music, a lot of the time if a Hip song comes on the radio I'll
switch stations.

But if you can't see why they're so popular, then I'm sorry but you must
be pretty dense. They're so popular because when they first started out,
they toured *relentlessly*. Basically if you lived in some dumbfuck town
in the middle of nowhere, the Hip would play there. I remember when I was
living in PEI, it was almost a sure thing that the Hip would play bot
Summerside and Charlottetown about once a year. *Nobody* was playing
Summerside back then. They've earned their popularity; they've played places
most bands wouldn't bother with. Even now that they're selling out stadiums,
they play a lot more places than most bands of their level of popularity
would.

Also, even though I don't like their music, I have enormous respect for
the band, and I honestly think they're doing a lot to further the growth
of music in Canada. Think about how many indie bands they have asked to
tour with them. Thanks to the Hip, a lot more people have been exposed
to the Rheostatics, Eric's Trip, By Divine Right...

And let's not forget all the benefit shows that they organize, and the fact
that they reserve the best seats at their shows for their biggest fans (and
not just the ones with the most money or scalpers), and that a lot of
Downie's lyrics are very intelligent (and many of them posess a patriotism
that rivals those of Stompin Tom Connors).

But yes, it is very unfortunate that they have so many stupid fans. I
often find it hard to disassociate their music from all the stupid drunk
fratboy engineering student types that listen to their music (and yes, I
know there are lots of Hip fans that don't fit this category). Perhaps if
I could then I might learn to appreciate the Hip's music.

i'm more for coining "drunk university students" myself.....gees....I
did a karaoke thingy about 2 years ago at the gorsebrook lounge at

night.....college girls drunk??? and their mindless boyfriends. what
fun to watch....gees, I know college can be a pain..with pressures

excuse to be a asshole. great stuff they teach in university.....they
should teach you "how to dodge student loan collection 101"

logical.

No you're not. One time when I went to see them when I was a teenager over 20 years ago at Phil's Grandson in Waterloo they threw a pair of dirty socks at us from their tour van. The were just starting out back then and we were talking to them outside after their show. My friends and I were big music fans and I guess they thought we were groupies or something. I don't know why they thought that my friend was telling gord Downey she thought he had one of the most unique voices coming up in rock and roll. Not a bad comment for a 15 year old to make. She was trying to talk to him on a more equal footing since she herself was a singer. My younger 14 year old friend asked for their autograph. I guess she was a little more star struck. Anyways they didn't give her one instead the threw a pair of dirty socks at us while yelling some derogatory stuff. What a bunch of douche bags. Any song they have ever made is tainted for me with that occurrence. I have friends who are pretty big fans of theirs who say they are good just get over that. I just say nah there's nothing to get over they're a bunch of douche bags.

People are mostly tone deaf sheep who are too won over by a catchy jingle to notice the singer is very pitchy and the lyrics lost in a you had to be there metaphor. I suspect most fans are not musicians themselves unless they're just being polite as to not hurt their own chance at a music career. Not that I think everyone needs to be an amazing singer but Gord doesn't even sound competent.

Also whenever a musician dies the vultures take advantage. I'm sure his pending death is currently fueling the media's interest.

I don't get it either. Yeah all that touring to BFnowhere got them notoriety bc Gord Downey represents every guy (and there are plenty) that shouldn't be on stage but is on stage. Everyone of his fans is going "look one of us is on stage, he actually got there! He made it! It's amazing." Yes it is. It's amazing how a guy with no business to be on stage got there. The circumstance, not the content. The legions of fans (white frat dudes who cant dance or sing) are vicariously living the "rockstar" dream through Downey. Heck, Dan Akroyd tried to give them a boost on SNL years ago, and they tried to crack other markets. It didn't work. The context wasn't there, they presented their content, but that isn't good. You can't take the context with you, it is where it is. It's small town white Canada. Nothing wrong with that really, but it doesn't mean it's good music or viable for legendary status. A celebration of mediocrity. Thinking your own son is the best. Can't blame them for loving their son. But again, it doesn't mean he's that good. It's too bad the guy has to face death sooner than naturally expected for him though, he's a human and I wish him well for that reason.

Agreed! They've been thriving off of the same 10 hits for over 20 years now! They're afraid to come out with something new because they know it'll never measure up to their previous work. If a band like Metallica or GnR stopped making albums 20 years ago, people would absolutely hate them. But there's some strange attraction to the Hip that I can't figure out. There are plenty of other, BETTER, Canadian bands out there who continuously create new music! I've stopped listening to local radio because every other song is a Hip song. It just goes to show how mindless the masses are.

Yes it is tragic that the lead singer has brain cancer, but he is not the first and nor sadly will he be the last.

I went with my daughter to see Sam Roberts here in Vancouver several years ago. Tragically Hip unfortunately came with the deal. Sam Roberts was great as expected as the opening act. We lasted one song by Hip and then got up and left. The guy can't sing, acts like a goof on stage, dresses like a clown and has absolutely the most annoying voice known to man. It wasn't even worth sitting through even though we had paid for it.

His medical condition is what it is, but he only represents a small fraction of Canadians, and not very well.

The are only popular in Canada. No where else in the universe. The singer isn't. Weak. Off key. Band mediocre.

Guy gets a brain tumor all of the sudden hes the greatest Canadian ever. Gordon should just roll over and die sick of his public displays about the goddam Indians

I hate them the only time I remember people liking them was when they were totally smashed probably why they dot mind that horrible voice.

Thats funny both the other bands you mentioned are horrible too The Guess Who has like two songs people recognize and Burton and that turd from BTO(Another shitty band that has one song that people know) havent written anything new in 30 years. neil young sounds like a bunch of whining his voice is almost intolerable. Whats next your going to say bob dylan has the best voice ever. Speak for yourself I know tons of people who think the hip sucks.

You're not the only one. Hey, R.I.P. to Gord and best wishes to his family. But I simply could not appreciate anything about their music... style or sound.

Tragically Hip is the worst band I have heard in Canada. Musically untalented and mediocre. Which in Canada makes them popular, unfortunately, and those with better taste in music then have to endure intolerable suffering. Downie's voice sounded like a sheep indeed. Although a sheep is much more tolerable. Best analogy I have heard. When I hear the hip on the radio I change the station. Nicelback is awful and still better than the Hip I believe. Which isn't saying much. Just because they're Canadian doesn't mean we have to like them. Sorry Downie lost to cancer but he was far from a saint. Disturbing how people are glorifying him in the media today.

I have never liked them, I cannot even listen to them, his voice makes me rage. It is so bad that I turn the radio off when they come on, or at least leave the room. When I was a teenager I discouraged my sister from dating someone because they liked the hip, that was 20 years ago. Maybe the words of the songs would be good if they were sung by someone who had a better voice. I am not unhappy that he passed, it was not a shock, he has been terminal for over a year, i am sick of hearing it though.

I understand that Gordon Downey was a great guy, and it is sad that he had to die. However, I agree with you in every particular. His singing could drive me out of a room!

i watched a documetary on netflix about a canadian band the tragically hip... never having heard of them and not wanting to be overly critical Specially of the lead singer but they are horrible... I realize the lead singer was diagnosed with brain cancer which is horrible I feel terrible for him. I just trying to understand the band was any better before that took place because I just don’t get them especially the lead singer - his vocals are poor...were they ever any better?

his unfortunate bout with this disease had to be difficult andchis efforts commendable ... but as a profsessional band for decades how could that be,there just isnt anything good about them...so can someone explain why and how they were a money making (?) touring band?
Were they or let me ask this, was the singer ever any good?
Either way, RIP.

I just Googled Are the Tragically Hip any good? Added terrible - got here.

I was watching the movie about them and, seriously, wondered if it was just a ruse like say The Ruttles or Spinal Tap. They sound really really below average.

And I thought I was the only one who did like the TH.
Saw them in Saskatoon, every song sounded the same.
Thankfully the tickets were free.
