From Nashville, by way of North Carolina
STELLA
+
OWE'N
(ex-JUNKHOUSE)
Thursday, May 22 ( doors 8pm)
BARRYMORE'S MUSIC HALL, Ottawa.
Stella was born in North Carolina and spent its formative years in a
bi-city existence between Charlotte and Nashville, where the band
currently live and record.
Stella's music has been described by The Village Voice as " a study in
brooding... achieved with abstracted guitars which coil around each other
likes snakes inamorata, and just as slithery-sharp." Stella creates music
that is uniquely American: grooves drawn from the emotional signal
pyschology of Sly Stone and Marvin Gaye beckon the listener to tonal
structures contemporized by Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine, Radiohead,
and others. Melodic edges and intense vocals are woven into songs
populated by explosively raw guitar and tightly focused songwriting.

The first ever ZAPHOD BEEBLEBROX RECORDS showcase.
TENSPEED + COOKIE + everender + PAPERJACK
Saturday, May 31 ( doors 8pm)
BARRYMORE'S MUSIC HALL, Ottawa.
Zaphod Beeblebrox Records is a spin-off from the club of the same name.
The label is a cooperative effort between the bands involved and Eugene
Haslam, owner of the nightclub and label. Based loosely after
Murderrecords, Handsome Boy and Psonic Unyon, etc. Zaphod Beeblebrox
Records was formed to promote Ottawa bands that deserve national and
international recognition.
The initial roster of Zaphod Beeblebrox includes TENSPEED, FROG, COOKIE,
MUMBLEWEED, PAPERJACK, THE ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING SANDWICHES and TOUGH
LUCK BUDDHA.
Over the next few months we will be showcasing the bands on the label both
here and at Toronto's Horseshoe nightclub. We now have a Toronto presence
with the addition of John Whitley (from Bingo Jet International) as our
street rep.
This sort of collaboration between a nightclub and its artists is a first
in Canada. Which is why MUCHMUSIC will be on hand to report on the event.
The event will be hosted by Johnny Vegas on May 31 at Barrymore's Saturday
Night Party series.

If you like BJORN AGAIN you're gonna love
The Mexican Elvis
EL VEZ
Friday, June 6 ( Doors 8pm)
BARRYMORE'S MUSIC HALL, Ottawa.
Lo-fi loser chic got you looking for a little pizzaz? Liberal-PC
fisticuffs making you wish you could sleep through this election year?
Break out the glitter and forget democracy! Its time to submit to the new
revolutionary regime of EL VEZ.
EL VEZ may not be the King, but he's undoubtedly "El Rey" of Mex-
Americana. For the last eight years he has wowed crowds worldwide with
revues that combine the histories of American music and Chicano culture,
putting the tequila in musical shots, the salsa in grits, and the Memphis
in the Mariachis.
Robert Lopez conceived El Vez at an opening of Elvis-related folk art in
1988. Playing Colonel Parker to a local Elvis impersonator, Lopez was
inspired to go one better, and, on a dare, went to Weep-Week--the annual
celebration of Elvis' birthday--in Memphis. By the time EL Vez stepped of
the stage, a Los Angeles reporter had picked up his story for a feature.
Since then El Vez has brought the gospel of Elvis, Love and Chicano power
to cities big and small.

From Chapel Hill, North Carolina
BEN FOLDS FIVE
+ September 67
Sunday, June 8 ( Doors 8pm)
BARRYMORE'S MUSIC HALL
Ironic, heartfelt, melancholy, hopeful and altogether unique: the music of
Ben Folds Five is representative of its three (not five) members. Ben
Folds Five introduced the guitar-less line-up of Ben Folds(vocals, piano),
Darren Jessee(drums) and Robert Sledge(bass) to the guitar-crazed world of
alternative rock.
In its album review Rolling Stone wrote: "Folds is....a truly formidable
talent, brimming over with melodic gifts, efficacious verbal command and
protean musical instincts." And SPIN praised the way Ben " drops Gershwin
licks into his solos and weaves Fats Waller and baroque into a repertoire
that merges the smarty-pants pop of Squeeze with the punctillious
prog-rock of Queen."
Ottawans would be wise not to miss this tour which sees Ben Folds Five
playing Tokyo, New York, Copenhagen, London and Norway.
Opening band September 67 recently opened for Wilco in Ottawa.

If you like the POGUES!
From County Galway, Ireland
THE SAW DOCTORS
Wednesday, June 11 (Doors 8pm)
BARRYMORE'S MUSIC HALL, Ottawa.
"There is a special place in rock 'n roll mythology for that rare
phenomenon, the people's band-performers who have established a
relationship with their audiences irrespective of marketing budgets and
media approval and for whom the dictates of fashion are largely
meaningless. The Saw Doctors are the latest in this strangely noble line."
--David Sinclair/ The Times
Beloved in Ireland, The Saw Doctors plays Irish folk rock reminiscent of
the Pogues without the politically charged anger. Instead the songs are
those of regular guys who are more likely to be romantic also-rans than to
find bliss. Mazndolins and accordions tickle the melodies of rocking reels.
"It was bananas," guitarist Leo Moran told his friends in Ireland when he
got home from the band's last tour in North America, "People were
literally hanging from the rafters."

I am forming a new newsletter/website for the purpose of reviewing Indie
bands demo's/cd's etc. With the contacts I have made, I will be able to
send this to A&R departments and clubs, and the key to that is they will
be solicited.
This will be a free service, but I must warn you, this review service
will be a realistic one, as in if your music sucks, we will say it sucks,
but if it's good, than this can only help.
Any ideas/suggestions will be greatly appreciated, and please e-mail me
personally if you are interested in getting your music reviewed.
Good luck, and support Canadian Indie Music!!!
