So does Garth Brooks ever tour Canada?

He should come play Mile One Stadium, capacity 8300, here in the
easternmost city in North America, St. John's, Newfoundland.
George Thorogood just played a subset of the stadium, maybe
3000, that was close to 90% full but I think Garth could sell out
the whole stadium first time and then come back a second
time for a 20,000 person outdoor concert.

There is a big country following here on the island and more
should tour here (non-country acts such as Shaggy, Snoop Dogg and
Ludacris have come up from the US though). Within two
hours driving distance of the stadium is only a population of
about 250,000 but 38,000 showed up for a cheap outdoor
Sum 41 concert in October. There are more country fans
outside the city but a fair number in the city too.

For those on nf.general , would you go to a Garth Brooks
concert and what other country artists would you like to
have come tour here?

Some Newfoundland and Labrador country people are Ron Hynes,
Wayne Hynes, Jimmy Whiffen, Ray Lake, Blair Harvey (he
does folk blues too), Lady Luck and the Smoking Guns,
Saddle Sores, Lorraine Conway, Crooked Stovepipe (bluegrass),
Kentucky Tundra (bluegrass), Terry Penney, Harry Martin,
Shirley Montague, Eight Track Favourites, Kim Stockwood (country
influenced pop), Rasa (country influenced pop/folk, with
Sandy Morris on guitar and Erin Best on vocals), Erin Best
(has played Patsy Cline), Natalie Noseworthy (has played
Patsy Cline) and Natalie Nivera (acid-tinged alt-country/folk),
Sheri Ryan (country/folk), Amelia Curran (country influenced
moody original folk/pop), John Philipps, more. But there are
more celtic bands/artists here than country. (St. John's has
maybe the best live music scene for a city its size anywhere
in North America, so tour to the well, and recharge.)

For those on nf.general , did I miss anyone, especially
off the Avalon?

I like the song Iowa that Garth Brooks does and relate it
to my little-researched-so-far stuff about the Iowa Dakota
Salmon youth on my web page. Does Garth Brooks
have any native ancestry?

<begin speculative stuff>

A while ago when I thought I had matchmaking divination
ability I divined that Garth Brooks is supposed 4th orientation
male (compatible up close only with bisexual by nature female[s]
and not with lesbians saying they are bi but perhaps with
bi by narure woman [who would know of regular sexual
attraction to both genders] who is straight by lifestyle choice).
But the point of that is that sure he is compatible with any
bi by nature woman such as Monica Bellucci or Beyonce
Knowles or Ashanti or Sharon Stone or Jodie Foster or Stevie
Nicks or Geena Davis or Bernadette Peters or Halle Berry or Patricia
Conroy (as am I) but when I did a matchmaking trying to
factor in other things as well it came out his best match is
the above-mentioned Natalie Nivera (who does original
acid-tinged altcountry/folk). Supposedly she is his
Everley sister (voices would blend well and from hearing
Garth last night on CMT I believe that) and maybe they have
an unfinished past life connection or something. OK, I won't
believe that without proof but they could test it by singing
together, and by touch (the touch should be comfy and
sometimes warming and electric for strong compatibility).

However I haven't seen Natalie Nivera in St. John's in over
two years so maybe she moved to Toronto or elsewhere.

better yet...ACDC

Have it outside and it would be the biggest concert in the history of the
province.

I'd also like to see Clapton, Bon Jovi, and the Eagles

You really have no idea how the concert business works. And why do you keep
throwing out this number of 8,300 capacity for Mile One?? The number is
more in the range of 5,300, which could go up a little if you have a center
stage, but that doesn't happen much.

I'd like to see big name acts here as much as the next person, however as
one of my friends aptly put it, Newfoundland is where bands come to die.
These big acts cost big money, so take what you think a show budget would be
and likely triple it to get an accurate number. That means big ticket
prices, so until people here change their focus from paying $20 for the
obligatory summer Trooper concert to paying to see some big shows it's
really not going to happen. The truth of the matter is that we have a small
population and a small venue to deal with, which makes it hard to bring big
shows here, but if everyone shows a willingness to support the shows when
they come, then you can likely expect more of them.

And as an aside, George Thorogood does not constitute a big name act. I'm
not disputing the quality of his music, or that he has an audience, but he
is probably a C level act in the US, while Garth Brooks would be A level (as
would AC/DC and Neil Young). For Garth Brooks at Mile One you'd be looking
at tickets well over $100 if he decided to take a cut in his pay to play our
small stadium.

Sadly, you're right about this and I've noticed this.

Grew up in Montreal back in the old Montreal forum days and boy did I get to
go see some major big acts. It was totally awesome. But the forum could
seat close to 17,000 people. Tickets for the HUGE names back (KISS,
Frampton, Elton John, Rod Stewart, Aerosmith, Rush, ELO...and many more!)...
then were about 20 bucks and concerts were regulary sold out. Do the
math....17,000 x 20 bucks....there's no volume in ticket sales
here...plus..add the extra travel costs of an entire entourage getting from
Halifax (which gets quite a few big names) ..to here....makes alot more
sense to just head back down to the states when you hit NS..than to come
over here.

got to save up your cash. check on tour sites of your favorite bands.
hook them when they are in toronto and see a leafs / jays game
(pending time of year)on the same trip - it's well worth it. I gave up
hoping something decent would come down this way for a change. the
days of bob dylan, bowie, rush etc. are gone..............i'm still
highly pissed at mile 1 as a sin city tax payer. i thought that part
of the lure to build the white elephant was that with the baby leafs
there would be the guarantee that a number of the concert acts that
play in toronto would play here - some joke. i still have not and will
not forgive them for that screw up with the raptors.

Also the oldest city in North America, and the one with the most
bars per capita (or is it per square foot, or both?)

I don't have time to check for followups this morning but might
tonight.

Other well known Newfoundland bands/musicians are
Brothers in Stereo (country influenced rock), Crush,
Damhnait Doyle, Shaye (2/3 Newfoundland leaders),
Great Big Sea, Mark Bragg (country influenced alt rock),
Pamela Morgan, Jim Fidler, Lizband, loads more. Must run.

Also one more quick followup of some other Newfoundlanders who do some
country:

The Ennis Sisters are country influenced celtic folk/pop.
Jackie Sullivan is country-influenced soft original pop,
soothing voice.
Barry Canning is slightly country influenced rock.
Bareback do some country stuff.
Neil Conway does some country stuff (also reggae, etc.)

must run,

Also Rod Jackson does country, and Paddy Barry some,
and The Masterless Men do a little country and a fair
bit of bluegrass as well as celtic stuff. They do a mean
bluegrass version of House of the Rising Sun starting
off slow and then going into high gear.

No, the stadium web site says 5811 for HOCKEY and 8300 for
full concerts. Let me dig it out....

http://www.mileonestadium.ca/m1/building/fastfacts.asp?menu=building

used to say 8300 seats for full concerts but now says 5288 for
full stadium concerts and 8121 for centre stage events. However
it used to say 8300 which is why I have been saying 8300.
But it is still a good bit bigger than Memorial Stadium where
Tina Turner kicked off her Private Dancer tour since she wanted
to symbolically play in the easternmost city and get her tour
off to a relaxed start in a friendly place (and also where Van
Morrison played, he should come back to the new stadium).

And again in October Sum 41 played outdoors to 38,000 people
and after one initial stadium show Garth Brooks could charge a
bit more than Sum 41 the next year and get 20,000. And
Shania could draw 50,000 people for a $25 ticket or
20,000 for a $60 ticket here I bet.

So I guess someone made a type on the web site before,
from 8300 to 5300, and again it is not my fault I was quoting
8300, that used to be on the stadium web site.

Also of course touring musicians have me here to give them
a "Pan" blessing if they put me on the guest list or I like them
enough to shell out enough money to hear a dozen hungry
local bands in intimate surroundings (or maybe two dozen
if they have opening acts).

Andrea Monroe (of Bareback) and Tundra Trio (I guess a
subset of kentucky Tundra) are at The Rose and Thistle
tonight but I have a flu and may stay home.

Natalie Noseworthy is ten yearsish younger than Natalie Nivera
and a bit rounder faced and plays Friday and Saturday evenings
at The Bread Pig doing tunes from the 20s and 30s and recently
played alternate nights (alternatiing with Erin Best) in a musical
on Patsy Cline. Both Nivera and Noseowrthy were in a
band called Potmaster once I think a good few years ago.
I haven't seen Natalie Nivera in town for a couple of years
but saw Natalie Noseworthy at The Ship Pub a while ago
hanging out.

(But both are attractive.)

I haven't seen him live yet so can't comment but I guess the
same reason Jenny Gear looks enraptured when she sings,
its a question of being into it and of intensity and sometimes
of the song being a protest song or otherwise a message
that he wants to hammer home to the audience. (Does Jenny
have any country tunes on her upcoming CD?) Also he
wants to discourage stagediving women. :-)

Why does Ron Hynes always look drunk and stoned when he
is singing? Just kidding, the Rose and Thistle (must have)
set rules for him so the last few times I've heard him there
(it is basically his home bar to play at now, 3 times more
than The Ship) he has been steady and into it and
emotional singing and wonderful stuff, at the end of one
night for the last late set he sat on a stool amongst us and
played. So catch him there on Wednesday nights when
he is not on tour, and probably one or two weekend nights
a month too. My BC friend Tammy Fassaert may perhaps
play standup bass (and sing some I hope too) on Ron's
upcoming Hank tribute tour. But anyway Ron is the chief
living bard of this island, and I am just the chief fool. His
new CD is described at http://www.hynesite.org .

Oops, Andy Jones would probably dispute my claim to
be chief fool (he is known among you probably for
his role starring with William Hurt in Rare Birds, filmed
here, as was The Shipping News and Random Passage
in recent years).

Wayne Hynes is at the Basement tonight, and Chris Ledrew
and Tino Borges are at the Bull and something and
Jill Porter Band and Leather Tuskadero are at The Ship but
I have a flu and will stay home.

But that is crazy, the web page said 8200 for a good while,
then they updated it to 8300 so it wasn't a typo. If there are
5811 for hockey there should be 1.5 times as many for a
concert for a one-tier stadium. Take 10% of the hockey
seating out for stage and add all the floor seating and you
definitely have way more than 5288. I bet Blue Rodeo
would know. Even the Junos with all the extra stages had
more than 5288 I bet. But it takes a lot to get me in a
stadium out of the bars anyway, I didn't go to Barenaked
Ladies, Blue Rodeo, Nickelback, Shaggy, Ludacris,
Snoop(p) Dog(g), Joe Cocker, Chris de Burgh or many
other shows, I haven't seen a full stadium show there yet
except for the 2001 Festival 500 choral grand finale.

One other country performer I forgot is country rock diva
Terri Lynn Eddy. I hadn't heard her live and was thinking
she is blues but I just skimmed her CD recorded five years
ago when I think she was 17 and wow, she has the big
Aretha Franklin type powerful voice even as a teen.
She does (blues/soul/gospel)-tinged country rock and
a few slow country numbers included two penned by
singer/songwriter Dawn Trainor-Thompson (who with
Michelle Myrick and one other woman also used to
do a bit of country) who is best known for her song Madeleine.
Anyway she has Janis Joplin potential, major potential
and I hope she plays live near me soon. (Also a bit
similar to Sue Medley but unique.) (I didn't hear her
when she first started out since she was too young to
play bars and I missed her hall show, and she is
from outside St. John's [what town?])

I mean Terri Lynn, not Dawn, though Dawn is very good too
but doesn't belt it out quite as powerfully, but is a better
songwriter so far and better guitar player so far , and
a pretty good vocalist. more at the more soothing songs,
but Terri Lynn can both belt it out and do the gentle ones too.
