So I don't even know how to spell her stupid name. But how can you
appreciate such a musician?? I used to work with this so called Canadian
superstar, before Sony offered her this million dollar record deal.

This girl is such a spoiled rotten little bitch. Her "daddy" Owner of
Krevco Pools in winnipeg, MB ( and one of the more wealthy of the city) bought
her every thing she has including her career.

If we all had such "funds"in bank, couldn't we all be even more rich
and famous. Does anyone have any idea how many truly talented people there
are out there that do not have a Daddy Warbucks backing them???

Meeee-owwww! Thing is, nobody bought that Jobriath record (pardon the
geezer reference) but 300,000 liked her's enough to shell out for it.

all three members of our band have wealthy parents and you don't see
us with a record deal!!!

doesnt matter how much money you have...if people dont like your
record they aren't going to buy it. so what she's a bitch, doesn't
mean she puts out shit. she's got a great voice, and a decent band
behind her....that's what matters.

and if 300,000 people have bought her record then she must be doing
something right!

Wow, SOMEBODY'S a little bitter, aren't they? I knew nothing about who
Chantal Kreviazuk was, I just heard the song "Surrounded" on the radio and
thought, hey - that sounds pretty cool. Then when I listened to the CD I
thought, hey - all this stuff sounds pretty cool. Then when I saw her
pictures on the CD inlay I thought, jeez - she's hot. I guess I didn't
have the benefit of preconceived bitterness and hatred to guide my music
selecting process, the way you did. Thanks for the "info", but if you
don't mind I'll probably go on being a fan.

Although I'm sure people with money have a better chance at fame, I don't
think it's possible for someone without talent to be as successful as
Chantal has been. I love her music, she's great in concert and I've even
met her. Sure, I probably don't know her as well as others might, but from
what she APPEARS, she seems to ME very gracious, down to earth and
appreciative of her fans...

BTW: How does one buy a career?

My $0.02........I saw her live when she opened for Amanda Marshall last
summer, and even though her music isn't bad, her lyrics are pretty pathetic.
One example, there was a song where she was actually singing stuff like "I'm
driving home in my car and thinking of smashing your head with a microphone."
And "surround me like a circle"? Kind of a cheesy simile to use. And I
heard in an interview that she wrote the chours of the song "Wayne" just
because "it sounded good when I sang it." Maybe it's just me, but I prefer
music where the lyrics are more poetic and say something of meaning.

The only lyric that really seems to grate on me everytime I hear it is
when she sings "...when they dropped the bomb, yeah, still hate the bomb
etc..." repeated over and over. I don't know the exact words of that
line but it really seems to stand out in a song that otherwise I rather
enjoy.

I did think she was a rather good performer though when she came to Fed
Hall here in Waterloo.

Okay I love Chantal's music, so yes, I'm going to stand up for her...

I could correct you on the above exaggerated wrong lyrics, (the one about
the 'smashing your head with a microphone') but I won't bother, because
that's not the point...

My point is that you're wrong.

You're wrong in saying that her lyrics are pathetic. Just because she
writes in a straight forward, code-less style unlike a Sarah McLachlan or
Gord Downie ( I love these guys too!) doesn't mean that her words have any
less emotional impact.

Straight forwardness IS allowed, and please don't give me that crap about
'surround me like a circle' being a cheesy simile, what the Hell is she
supposed to say? 'You surround me like a...a...' What? A triangle?

And 'Wayne', lemmie see, no way ! It sounded good...Oh my God! Heaven
forbid someone using a word in a song because it sounded good! <Gasp> And
all this time I thought songs were supposed to sound bad! Cause this way,
its gotta have meaning!

First off, she had to give 'Wayne' a name, she might have well made it
sound good...now I understand where you're coming from, but understand
this: The 'meaning' of the song (if you listen carefully, it's there,) is
not about Wayne. Its about the 'loss of innocence' and Wayne is an
imaginary figure, he's used to describe a certain concern. He doesn't
exist. Therefore, what she names this imaginary person, really has little
do with the song...are you following? When writing a song, it is not
solely composed of words, it must have a flow and Chantal felt that Wayne
flowed with it, its a technical choice and something that sounds damn good
to me and at the same time, packed with emotion.

Just in case you're not a jealous Raine Maida obsessive freak and you
honest-to-God don't like Chantal becuase of her music only, well maybe
there's hope for you...I've tried really hard to make my point without
using silly similies and imagery, but I hope it still has meaning. I
realize that you were just expressing your opinion, but please, if you've
gotta vent, do it with the proper information...

And for those who are just jealous of Chantal because she MIGHT have Raine,
get a life! You're never going to get him, you're probably never going to
talk him or even be within a 5 m radius, so dream on and get a damn hobby
or some medical attention. Adolecent hormone suppression pills or
something, I dunno but don't vent your sexual frustrations out on her.
Give up, please!

POWER TO CHANTAL! She deserves it and don't tell me she's riding Raine's
wave of fame either...

Her daddy might have got her started, but he can't make people like her,
or give her talant. The impression she's made on everyone with her songs
and voice is all her doing and I think she deserves it. Sure, not
everyone can make it without getting some help, and if you can get that
help, good for you, but after that you're on your own. No matter how much
money you have, if you really suck you won't make it that big.

very immature and bitter IMHO.

Would you mind telling me what the actual lyrics are then, because those are
the lyrics that I and all the people I was with heard.

nd 'Wayne', lemmie see, no way ! It sounded good...Oh my God! Heaven

I apologize, I didn't explain well enough what Chantal said in the interview.
When asked what the meaning was, she said "I just wrote it because it
sounded good." Then she imposed a meaning on it, which in my opinion renders
it meaningless. I just think that songs should be written to say something.
Of course they have to sound good too, but I think the message should come
first.

Just in case you're not a jealous Raine Maida obsessive freak and you
honest-to-God don't like Chantal becuase of her music only, well maybe

OK, I respect your opinions about her lyrics, but I really object to your
suggestion that I don't like Chantal because I'm jealous of her. First of
all, I like OLP but I'm not a huge fan and, more importantly, I'm completely
indifferent to Raine Maida. I really don't care who he dates, marries,
sleeps with, or whatever. Second, many male celebrities that I like are
married or dating and I don't hate their wives/girlfriends or the work they
do. So I think you should also follow your advice: If you've gotta vent, do

it with the proper information.

Hello Jocelyn,

I'm sorry for offending you about the Raine Maida thing, it wasn't
really directed at you but at people in general. I thought I made it
clear, but I guess I didn't...I am just sick and tired of OLP fans posting,
e-mailing me, signing my guestbooks, etc. with nothing but horrible things
to say about Chantal. I've had enough of comments such as 'Well, is she
fucking Raine Maida or not?' and 'she's just riding off of OLP and Raine's
success'...
I did say 'just in case' or something to that effect...but I will do my
best to be more specific next time. I don't want to make enemies and in
fact I do like to discuss other people's music perspectives. Yes, even the
ones different from mine...so I extend this olive branch in hopes of
peace...

Is Our Lady Peace the biggest Canadian band to never break big in the
states? Must be right up there - I seem to recall one of their songs
getting a bit of play on alternative rock stations a year ago and that's it
- they just played a pretty small venue in Chicago (and I figure half the
crowd were Canadian expatriates - that was how it was with a Blur show I saw
in '94 - all Brits shouting "Play Trasssayyy Jahhhhks Yahhh Bahhhstahhhds!")
Last time I saw something like this was 54-40 and they were (are?) pretty
good - will have to check OLP out...

I saw her in San Francisco last night and she was great. The staion that
put the show on is mostly one that supports female artist. but you know
here in the States, there are lots of Canadian artists played here and

Crast Test Dummies, Our Lady Peace, Tragically Hip, Sarah McLachlan, Jann
Arden, just to name some. Do wish that I could say Moist, but sorry

If there's one thing to say about Kreviazuk's personality, it's that she
has a sense of humor. The room was full of formal wear and Chantal
Kreviazuk stepped on stage in a long black Heavy Metal shirt (only). She
played solo on piano, and took us through a journey of her experiences. She
was very sharing with the crowd and frequently prompted for feedback. It
was not unusual by the end of the set, for Chantal to stop a song to tell
us a story that she just remembered. Highlight of the show for me was a
gripping cover of the Stones, "Wild Horses".
