The recent thread on 12-string songs was very interesting. I really
enjoy McGuinn's Rickenbacker sound on the Byrds albums and his solo
efforts. Tom Petty's sound seems to echo it and I hear it in The
Pretenders a bit too. Here's a list -- anyone care to add to it?

Byrds/McGuinn
Turn, Turn, Turn
Mr. Tambourine Man
My Back Pages
The Bells of Rhymney
Eight Miles High
Chimes Of Freedom
Someone To Love
You Bowed Down
If We Never Meet Again
So You Want To Be A Rock & Roll Star
I'll Feel A Whole Lot Better
King of the Hill

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers
American Girl
The Waiting
So You Want To Be A Rock & Roll Star
Insider
Free Fallin' (solo)
Feel A Whole Lot Better
To Find A Friend
King of the Hill

Pretenders
Brass In Pocket
Talk of the Town
Back On the Chain Gang
2000 Miles

Eagles
Hotel California

I would add A Higher Place (nice McGuinn like riff in the bridge) and
You Wreck Me both from Petty's Wildflowers album.

Are there any 12-string electrics on that? I don't recall any...
If you're gonna include 12-string acoustic songs, that broadens the
spectrum quite a bit. One notable example is Queensrhyche's Silent
Lucidity, which they said was written around the sound of a great
12-string acoustic.

Well Van Halen recorded "Cabo Wabo" (off the OU812 Album) and "Secrets"
(from Diver Down) on a 12 string. Also one of the layered guitars off
"Poundcake" (For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge") was a 12 string.....

Oh, the stories I've been told,

Jimmy Page did many 12-string electric songs, although I can't think of
any at the moment. He was largely responsible for popularizing the "two

and even though the original is not done on a 12'er, U2's I Still Haven't

Crowded House use electric 12-strings very extensively. In fact, when I
saw them live in '94 I think Neil Finn & Mark Hart used them more than
they used their 6-strings. Their Fleadh '94 appearance was on TV here in
Canada just last week and, again, Hart used an electric 12-string for most
of the show. Distant Sun from their last album, Together Alone, is a
sublime example.

McGuinn toured with them some years ago, and I have a Crowded House CD ("I
Feel Possessed") on which they back they back him up singing three Byrds
songs live. They are very faithful to the originals, with only drummer
Paul Hester's distinctive slight swinginess giving the players away as
Crowded House.

I wonder if working with McGuinn influenced them to use 12-strings as
much as they do.

The Monkees made extensive use of 12-string guitars (or at least their
session musicians did). Actually Mike Nesmith and Peter Tork were
very competent guitarists. I would highly recommend the "Headquarters"
album, which happens to be their only album on which they played all
their own instruments (including 12-string guitars).

Just lotsa chorus. James Honeyman-Scott did use a Rick 6-string a lot

You're probably right.

Chrissie does play her Gibson J-200 Xtra 12-string on "Back on the Chain
Gang" on "The Isle of View" CD. And on the "Message of Love" video
Honeyman-Scott is playing a Rick but it's likely a 6-string.

Well, there was "Stairway," "Livin' Lovin' Maid," and I think a bit of
"Thank You" was plugged in. (And someone else mentioned "TSRtS.")

A couple other (non-Zep) songs that come to my mind are "Methodist
Coloring Book" by the Dead Milkmen and "Alien Shore" and "Here Again" by
Rush.

Very true. Many folks frequently mistake the sound of an echoed, or
compressed chorus effect for the "chime" of a Rickenbacker 12-string. But
this is not to say that the Byrds -- specifically Roger's instrumental
style -- didn't have a profound influence on many of these musicians.

I think his influence is as pronounced for the style he developed --
rhythmic single notes played counter-point to the melody; a lot of
harmonic intervals; suspended chords and open notes (few, if any, barre
chords from Roger); etc -- as it was for the sound of the Ric.

Although there's no denying the sound of the Ric. ;-)

"Thank You", "Tangerine", and "Living, Loving Maid" come to mind.

And then there was this really stupid song of theirs about "buying a
stairway to heaven" - anyone else ever hear it? I mean, where would you
buy a stairway to heaven, and then how would you get it home without bumping
it into everything? Or is "stairway to heaven" a metaphor for something
else - like, you know, sometimes words have two meanings?

> He was largely responsible for popularizing the "two

He used a Fender or Vox electric 12-string in the studio; I believe the
doubleneck was just for live performances. He saw a picture of bluesman
Earl Hooker playing one on an LP cover ("Two Bugs and A Roach"?) and
decided it would be just the ticket for live work.

REM used 12 strings on many of their early works. The two albums where it
is heard most are Reconing and Murmur, but it can also be heard alot on
Fables of the Reconstruction.

If you are even thinking about buying a 12 string, do it. I play both 12
string acoustic and elec. If you play mostly chords, the 12 string is just
amazing. I have a Rickenbacker 12 string electric. The best thing I ever
bought.

Some REM songs where 12 string is heard:

7 chinese brothers, letter never sent, camera, Laughing, talk about the
passion, so. central rain, green grow the rushes, ....many many more....

The velvet underground used 12 string strats on the third album (candy
says, some kinda love, I'm set free, the story of my life, what goes on (I
so think on this one, not sure though). And on the loaded versionof Sweet
Jane.

I saw a video with Petty sitting at a mixing board. He cues up the
opening to "American Girl," drops the faders on one channel and says
(sneering in his endearing way into the camera) something like "see, two

The obvious classics are Stairway to Heaven (originally recorded with
a 12-string I'm not sure of and a Telecaster for the solo, but
later with the Gibson 6/12 twin-neck) and The Song Remains the Same.

The Eagles used a white Gibson 6/12 twin on the live version of
Hotel California.

The band I remember making extensive use of the Gibson 6/12 were
Family, and I remember Charlie Whitney using three (not simultaneously)
when they played Edinburgh in about 1977.

There's a song by Paul Weller from his Style COuncil days
called "A Man of Great Promise" about a friend who died young. ANd
it starts with church bells chiming, followed by some 12 string Rick
riffs that could be right out of "Bells of Rhymney". Weller used to
play a 12 string Rick more with the Jam, like the cut "When You're Young"
off their Greatest hits.

Depends. On the '80s video of Hotel California, Don Felder is
switching between the 12-string neck of a white Gibson 6/12 with a
capo at the 7th, and the 6-string neck to trade licks with Joe
Walsh. However, there are none on the Hell Freezes Over version.

Point well taken. I should have excluded "Chain Gang" from my
statement. Oh well, there's still a lot of 6-string Rick on MkI
Pretenders that "sounds like a 12-string."

one yet?<< (Frederick Sall)

I bet if it was strung like a Ric, it might sound great -- what with the
Tele's "twangy" sound. I love to try one out.

"All I want" by Toad the Wet Sprocket is a good Byrds imitation, but
I don't know if really has a 12 string in it.

Here's a few more electric 12-string songs courtesy of Kirk Anderson:

"These Are the Days" off of the new Paul Westerberg album
sure sounds jangly to me, a great song and a great album.

Haven't tried one, but the Tele's twangy sound may make it TOO bright. Ric pickups are
MUCH darker than Tele's(compare a Ric 6 & a Tele), yet the Ric 12s sound pretty bright.
Don't know how it's strung, but to reverse it would require a new nut and may require
the bridge pieces to be re-arranged(may not be possible).

Most of the songs from "The Mission" (the band, not the movie) are played with
12 strings (I don't remember the guitar name, it has the shape of a teardrop).

Have fun..

I was not able to plug it in, but I did pick up and strum a Fender Tele
XII at a Custom Shop show that was held at a local dealer about a year
ago. It had the fattest neck I have ever put my hands around. When I say
fat, I mean it -- absolutely huge, as if they were afraid of it warping.
Way fatter than the fattest baseball bat Gretsch. A real tree trunk. Too
fat, even. I don't recall the string setup specifically, which probably
means it was not strung like a Rick, or I would have noticed. Did I
mention that the neck was FAT?

That would be a Vox, then.

Yesterday I was watching a video of Crowded House playing in Koln and
Neil Finn was playing an odd teardrop-shaped guitar which wasn't the
usual Vox Teardrop. Don't know what it was though.
